The Reverend Green is Al Green the former gospel, r&b singer who is in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame who has his own church in Memphis. I went to Law school in Memphis in the early 80s while the Dr. who proscribed the meds to Elvis was on trial. Marc is also Jewish which is why he answers to the question "Are you a Christian child" and says " Well I am tonight"

Marc Cohn wrote this after traveling to Memphis to gain some inspiration and clarity after suffering a writers block. These were some of the experiences and feelings that he went through on that visit! One of my favorite songs of all time.

He also had her listen to all the songs he wrote and asked her which ones she liked. She said she liked all of them, but Walking in Memphis was her favorite. He asked why and she said it was because her name was in it. 😊 That is the one he became famous with as well years later.

The lyric is "10 feet off of Beale," as in Beale Street, not beer.

Got a kick out of the erroneous lyric in the video that read "walking with my feet 10 feet off a beer" instead of the correct 10 feet off of Beale. LOL

Love this video - and of course, the song.. but the "auto lyrics" are mostly wrong (and kind of hilarious at times)... "walking... ten feet off of Beale (Beale Street) - not ten feet off of BEER? Also: "Reverend Green be glad to see you when you haven't got a prayer" (Al Green) - not "River and Green"... lol --

it is a good song, the structure and story which are both complimented by the piano and history of Mr. Presley, the storytelling is akin to a concerto barring the brass, but still a story in black and white, like it would be on paper.... nice analogies in this clip..

This is my BEST karaoke song. Key of C, and right in my sweetspot. Plus, I used tondrive from Dallas to Memphis just to eat lunch.

This is by far the best version of this song. Cher is a very accomplished artist, but Mark Cohn's original will always be be better, to my ear at least...

You should watch the live performance versions where he tells the story of what inspired him to write the song before he sings it.

Just so you know the lyrics say walking on "Beal" not 1- feet off a beer. Beal is a famous street in Memphis

He performed this “live” at a small venue near Disney in the early 90’s. When he reached the end of the song, someone yelled out “RAIN” before he finished the last few bars. Rather than spoil the moment, he stopped and said I guess I’ll have to start it over again. Hearing it twice, back to back, was EXACTLY what the crowd wanted... and needed !! Thank you for the memory, Marc ❤❤❤

Many people think it was a tribute to Elvis. Actually, Marc was experiencing writers block as well as other things going on in his life. So, he went down to Memphis on Beale street (historical blues playing strip) and found inspiration through his experiences there. These experiences included WC Handy (blues legend) as well as Elvis and others like Muriel who was an 85 year old teacher that inspired him when he came in and played and sang many hymns with her at the small building called "Hollywood" in Memphis. They sang many songs and she had to whisper to him the lyrics of the hyms. She then whispered to him and said he needed to go home and write what he was meant to write. Lots of great inspiration for this song. It actually made him a big music star after writing this.
