The singer is Paul Carrack. Mike Rutherford (Genesis) is the man with long hair and a beard who, in the video, walks hand in hand with his young son. Mike Rutherford co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Alexander Robertson. The song won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1989, and was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1990, including Record and Song of the Year, as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Videos. In 1996, famed composer Burt Bacharach said that the song was one of the greatest lyrics of the past decade. "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is a Miracle", from the 1985 self-titled debut album, were also quite successful, although I really like "You Are the One". From the 1988 album "Living Years", in addition to this song, I would also recommend "Nobody's Perfect", "Beautiful Day" and "Why Me?", although one of my favorites from a musical/instrumental point of view is "Don't".

I didn't speak to my father for 5 years prior to his death. We had a falling out. Then one day, i called him. He was very sick and was dying. We talked for about 10 minutes. Said our good byes. I called him 2 weeks later and said everyrhing i needed to. Told him nothing matters and that i loved him. He died 3 days later. All thise years i wasted being angry. Id give anything to have 5 minutes with him again. Buckaroo

I'm 58 now and I cannot listen to this song without shedding a few tears. My dad and I were very close but he grew very ill quickly 10 years ago. He battled for a while and I thought he was doing better. But, my mom called me 6:30 one morning and found him dead outside from a self inflicted gun shot to his heart. He couldn't handle the pain; knowing he was not going to get better; and never wanted to burden anyone to care for him. I never got to say goodbye to him and man does it hurt. If there's anyone reading this and holding a grudge with your parent; sibling or close friend, get over it and make up. Love your show Stacey!

Until two months ago, for me, this was "just" a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics and carefully arranged music; I bought the album on vinyl as soon as it came out, and a few years later, in 1996, I also bought it on CD in Manhattan, New York, in that five-story store that I don't think exists anymore.. Since last July, when my mother passed away, the song has taken on another meaning. Inside me, in addition to the natural melancholy, there remains a slight sense of guilt because to convince her to be admitted to hospital I had assured her that I would not let her die in a hospital bed but, with a clear head and reasoning rationally, when her kidneys and heart "gave up", if she had been at home without treatment and "pain therapies" she would have suffered much more. The day they started with sedation, forced hydration and morphine, she was still mentally clear and, when she saw and heard me, she held my hand and said: "Mom's love, you are here" and I replied: "Of corse Mom, I'm here and I will not let you go away", even though she was aware of what was happening. Her last words and her look remain a comfort to me but, more than anything, what can really put my conscience and soul at peace is having shown her and made her feel my affection and my love throughout her life, even if there were discussions and some arguments, as I think is normal in any family and in any parent/child relationship. You gave me life, the most precious gift, and unconditional love: "I love you mommy!" ❤❤❤❤

In my opinion, this particular message is loaded more towards reconciliation and saying things like I love you after previously not doing much if any of that, to your loved ones, particularly those who are old or seriously ill. Mike Rutherford in the video, (with one of his sons) and after whom the band is named attended an expensive school and his father was an officer in the Royal Navy . I believe he was rather disappointed in his sons taking up music as a career. Perhaps his father died before he'd reached peak success with both Genesis AND Mike and the Mechanics. I DON'T think this song is so much about selfishly saying what you like to your parents, it's more about prioritising seeking reconciliation, calmness and affirming loving relationships. If that means addressing negative issues, so be it, but only if it helps build the road to ultimate reconciliation and healing.

Even decades before my dad passed it made me sad, knowing that I was probably never going to be able patch things up with him, though I tried much later (to no avail). Great reaction Stacey! If there is any 'estrangement' within a family, especially with parents, this one hits deep! It's really a call to say time is too short to let allow a wedge to drive us apart...because some day, it will be too late to make amends. There is nothing more expensive than regret. Wish my eldest sister would realize that...she's ostracized herself from the family. Wasn't at my wedding, didn't attend my grandmother or mother's funerals, doesn't know her nephews or nieces. It's sad really. So for me, this song hits hard...and did for my mom & dad too.

This song means different things to different people. I lived my ENTIRE life from 13 years on totally at odds with an estranged father,,,,who completely emotionally abandoned his 7 biological children, while continuing to pretend to care with inane weekly visits....and pointless empty holiday get togethers. He never took responsibility for totally F-ing up EVERY one of our lives to one degree or another. My "Living Years" regret has never been about reconciliation, rather voicing my disdain and anger that he would cow tow to some hore (spelling, I know) woman over his 7 children. My Dad passed away in 2017.......and I am pissed that I didn't get the chance to tell him how much I hated (and still do) him for doing that to our family. 100% Truth.

Genesis were/are a remarkable band. Their 5 key members not only steered genesis through a remarkably successful career, but all had success as solo Artists. The first to jump ship was lead vocalist, songwriter and flower, Peter Gabriel, he of Sledgehammer fame. Then Lead Guitarist Steve Hackett. He remained successful but only really as a Prog Rock album artist. Going to see him in November. You know Phil Collins, drummer and lead vocalist ran two parallel careers, both enormously successful. Mike Rutherford, Bass, Lead, Rhythm, of Mike And The Mechanics, ran two parallel careers having some big hits as MATM, the Living years of which is the biggest. He co wrote Living Years and Follow You follow Me, a Genesis song you may like to take a listen to. Seeing them twice next year. Finally Tony Banks, Keyboardist extraordinaire, who's solo career never really took off like the others. Oddly enough it is his writes/cowrites, I like best in Genesis. That Stacey, is where Mr 'Mike' Rutherford has been hanging around these last 55 odd years. Another thing, if you do a 'first time' on Follow You Follow Me, listen closely to the rhythm guitar and compare to the living years. Very very similar and impossible not to conclude they were written by the same guy. You will love it.

Interestingly, Mike Rutherford, though he played some guitar in early Genesis, was primarily a bassist, and a darn good one too. This is a beautiful song, and there are a few other M+M songs worth checking out, most notably "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is a Miracle." Still, it may be worthwhile checking out his "home" group, Genesis. There is a ton of Genesis stuff worth checking out, but I'll plug "Firth of Fifth," a song that showcases Mike on bass, and features what is considered one of the great progressive rock guitar solos (Steve Hackett is right up there with David Gilmour); in fact, the song shows off the skill of each of Genesis' members (Phil Collins on drums and Tony Banks on keys).

I'm a child of divorce, born in Illinois in the mid 70's and was always close with my dad until 1987 when I moved to south Florida. our weekly father son time was cut to school holidays. then this song came out in my early high school days and made such an impact . there were things missed "like my graduation" and a change in point of view of people " we came from a small rural farm community to the cultural melting pot of Broward County. my dad was a man of few words throughout his life, and before he passed in 2016 there were still conversations we needed to, but hadn't had. the regrets I have had diminished. but this song stirrs up thoughts of what should have been. but also brings forward the fond memories I have with him.

Every time I hear this song, it serves as a powerful reminder to cherish every moment with him and to be the best son I can be, just as he has been the best father to me, although nobody is perfect. Thanks for the reaction to this song! To this day, I continue to learn from my dad gone 30 years now. We had it pretty good while he was here, and now I continue to draw on his wisdom and possibly impart it to others. Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Steve Hackett all have had fine solo careers during and post Genesis. I do recommend Genesis from the Genesis of Genesis as a fascinating study of the evolution of one of the highly adventurous progressive bands to come out of the UK in the early 70s.

He addresses it from the Father to Son relationship which was stressed more in the past when the Father was passing the farm to his son and maybe that's not the way to go with newer, more modern white collar career options available. The only thing the past and the present agree on is that college is a rip-off. 😂

The video is brilliant as first you see the children's choir followed later in the song by the adult choir. Those children are now the adults.....and many in the adult choir are probably gone now. Basically, it's the circle of life. Don't hold grudges.....it's not worth it.

Very poignant song about death of dad. Mike Rutherford from Genesis leads this band as his solo career since 1985. Mike is on the story pictured on the video with his son. Nice reaction.

I love this song! The Dutch have the image of being straightforward...blunt is in the eye of the beholder.😉 Being straightforward serves to benefit an honest and clear conversation. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Japanese singer Kaho Shimada also has a great cover of this song, the title is "Friends", uses the same music but different lyrics, not the same feeling; it is a more uplifting song. It was used a theme song for a TV show, Hotel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2Lbh5uOaNGthNU

Genesis had quite a lineup. Not just Mike and Phil, but Peter Gabriel. Highly recommend some Peter Gabriel. He left Genesis to go solo, and Collins became the lead singer.

Paul Carrack (Lead singer) is one of my all time favorite singers. Amazing blues style voice. And here's a little tid bit for you since you're now a big Pink Floyd fan. Paul was a guest singer for the song "Hey You" during a mega concert that Pink Floyds Roger Waters put on called Live at Berlin. You can find the video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6TUp5SEmMqlhdEsi=93isRUMXTGkaCKuy Maybe do a reaction one day to it.
