When I listened to Golden Brown for the very first time, early in the morning on a cold winter day in 1987, I was so grateful that it helped me forget my school problems for 3 minutes. Now I have listened to it more than a thousand times, as one of the very few melodies who can take me to another world whenever real life gets ugly.

Excellent reaction Psyche. The Stranglers were one of those groups that seemed to hang around the fringes and were very difficult to categorize and that's precisely why I liked them so much. Golden Brown is my second favourite song of theirs and I love the counterpoint of the harpsichord, very unique in popular music. My favourite song of theirs is a little more pop oriented, it's called Skin Deep, it has a catchy hook and is very melodic!

This record is so strangely beautiful and hypnotic as you said - I did not study how good it was in February 1982 when it reached number 2, but now the re-discovery will stay with me forever. I suddenly find the need to repeat it over and over again because it is so melodically addictive.

Who would have thought a punk band singing about heroin would use a harpsichord. The song has a very hypnotic feel to it. The performance scenes were filmed in very exotic London at the Leighton House Museum in Holland Park. This was also used in the filming of the video for Gold by Spandau Ballet in 1983.

Firstly, there's no way that you are old enough to remember this, backhanded compliment - I'm sorry. Secondly I am thankful that I have always been terrified of needles, I am a recovering alchie, but Heroin must be great right? I've seen many many people spiral down on golden brown - mostly smoking dirty , cheap stuff when they'd run out of veins to puncture - again, no judgement just thankful my addiction didn't go that way. The Stranglers were great, there's a story about drinky Chef Keith Floyd popping over from Bristol to get Huw out of Jail here in Cardiff.- might be apocryphal, but is a good story. Lovely stuff x

The reason it sounds so different to all their other songs is, it's a Dave Brubeck song. It was originally written as a jazz instrumental piece in 1964. The Stranglers just wrote the lyrics.

There's a jazz quartet that do covers of modern songs. There is a very heavily edited vid featuring Dave Brubeck that accompanies the tune on KZbin. However, Dave Brubeck has nothing to do with this song at all

A saxophonist named Laurence Mason recorded his own version of The Stranglers Golden Brown and overdubbed the video of The Dave Brubeck Quartet playing “Take Five” with it. It was a clever idea because the beat patterns are very similar, but Dave Brubeck has nothing to do with it other than in a visual sense!
