The beginning of the Cartmel Master Plan (proto-Timeless Child, in that like the Timeless Child would give some info about the Doctor which would generate more mystery) like how he said "we had problems with the prototype" rather than "they") as well as schemer McCoy Doctor (knowing what outcome he wanted + which 'chess pieces to move' before the story even began) both of which were mainly explored in the Expanded Universe during the 90s

Hi Gals! As no one mentioned it last week (and I wasn't able to post), the Bernard and British Rocket Group mentioned in episode one refers directly to Quatermass, a classic BBC TV series of the 1950s which had a massive effect on the development of British Science Fiction for decades to come (the third serial "Quatermass and the Pit" is still well worth a look).

Was soooo excited for the Quatermass mention. ❤❤❤ (Maybe as a Doctor Who-adjacent thing to react to, one day they could react to the live remake of 'Quatermass Experiment' with David Tennant and Mark Gatiss -- I mean, I technically prefer the original Quatermass stuff, of course, but I still think the remake is fun. Plus, Tennant had just learned that he was cast as the new Doctor while making it, so Quatermass's first line to Tennant's character Dr. Briscoe was changed from "Good to have you back, Gordon" to "Good to have you back, Doctor" as a deliberate reference. ❤)

One important thing about Ace’s character is that her best friend/possibly girlfriend, Manesha, died in a racist firebomb attack on her flat. After that Ace went off the rails a bit, but it’s left her with a very little compassion for racists.

I've seen a handful of episodes from every classic Doctor, and I gotta say Seven is one of my absolute faves. He's got such fantastic humor to him while also adding a dark edge, and despite how RIDICULOUS that sounds on paper, he makes it work. A real prototype for the modern Doctors who can just turn on a dime and suddenly they're threatening to implode your whole world or trap you in a hell dimension. Good stuff. Please please pleeeeeeeease do the 90s movie. Wanted it since I first subscribed to this channel :P

It helps that he's also the most modern of the classic doctors - both literally and figuratively - and a lot of elements from 7+Ace's tenure were projected onto the revival. Ace is the currently the template for all modern companions, and the Doctor (7) is very alien and playful - but also dark, mysterious, and dangerous.

I've been waiting for this all week and I'm so glad you both enjoyed it. I think this is my favourite McCoy story, tied with Curse of Fenric. Prof Rachel Jensen is a great character and I love the scene where she tears a strip off Gilmore in the cafe. Aaronovich fills this story with great side characters and lot of nuance: there's commentary on race, slavery, empire, nazis, homegrown right wing extremists and how women's place in society was changing in the sixties. Jensen visually is styled like the Barbara Wright and has echoes of Liz Shaw (who was also drafted in from Cambridge to be a scientific advisor). There was quite a bit of fan conversation contrasting Tom Baker's fourth Doctor's "have I the right?" speech in Genesis of the Daleks to McCoy nuking the Daleks and blowing up Skaro here. There's also the speculation that the events of both of those stories could imply that it was the Time Lords that started the Time War.

Starting the Time War: there's a Marvel UK comic strip (in 'Daredevils magazine) drawn by Lloyd (later drew V for Vendetta), in which the Time Lords are setting up their station and time devices around a black hole-to-be to become the Lords of Time, and time agents start to pop up, kill people and try to explode the Time Lords right at the start of their existence. The rival power, the 'Black Sun League' appear to be DC comics' Green Lantern Corps, and the 'later to appear in Excalibur comic' Gatecrasher's Technet make a first appearance. Both Marvel Universe and an expy of DC universe appear, as does Omega (and a couple of other Time Lords working on the project). As a collectible, this issue contains a number of unique and later highly relevant details about Doctor Who. Partly because the guys making Doctor Who from 2005 had all read the comics and the novels that continued the story. They wrote several of them, too.

I still can't believe Michael Grade pulled the plug on Sylvester and Ace , despite the cuts they were a big improvement . This was probably their best , the Special weapons Dalek capturing quite a few schoolboy imaginations . If only they had some of the budget of the new wave of sci - fi films at the time . Still , absence made the heart grow fonder and despite the tv movie inbetween , the revamped show when it returned brought a lot of joy , and was very much a Labour of love to many involved . I remember Billie Piper on a DVD feature bemused by all the grown men weeping at the sight of a new Dalek. Only one more and Paula will be up to date , certainly this one was a good choice to watch first ..

7:25 Ah, the Special Weapons Dalek. The novel goes into so much detail about that one. Also, that explosion caused the Police in London to assume it was an irl terrorist attack (it was the 80s and the IRA were still very active at the time). The amount of explosive they used for that shot was way too high and blew out windows for quite a distance around that area. Cost the BBC a lot of money to deal with xDD

I think it's worth expanding on that last bit. The BBC apparently weren't exactly on the ball when it came to notifying the powers that be what they were up to which led to some, uh, confusion. One of the shots of the Dalek battles saw explosives go off under an old railway arch. Not only did that kick up the usual smoke and debris but it also loosened god knows how many years of soot from the old steam trains that had caked the archway. The street ends up covered in a very slowly clearing mix of soot and smoke. All the cameras are set up some distance away (note the fairly high angles for some of the shots in the episode) to keep clear views and stay out of the big dramatic wide shots. An ambulance crew pull up unsure of what's going on but primed for the worst. Whereupon several Daleks, seemingly alone with no production visible, roll out of the murk..... The reaction of the ambulance crew is unrecorded but (assuming this happened and isn't just a tall tale of course) I can only imagine a change of underwear was involved!

The Dalek claw was a callback to the first Daleks story. One scene showed a Dalek out of its case but covered by a sheet. All you saw sticking out was the claw. I still remember when I went into the Sharper Image store at the mall and saw a Dalek Time Controller. :-) The absence of the Tardis in much of Sylvester's run was actually due to the discovery of asbestos in the BBC studios.

Many of these actually belonged to Sophie Aldred. So my guess is it's a Watchmen pin.

Both Michael Grade (Controller Of BBC1 and then Director Of BBC Programmes), Jonathan Powell (Head Of BBC Drama and then Controller Of BBC1) told the production team that the series would be reduced to 14 x 25 minute episodes. The budget wasn’t reduced at all. It increased to 1% per Season. The reason there are fewer TARDIS scenes in the McCoy Era because Andrew Cartmel thought it slowed the pace of the story.

In 'End of Time' when the Tenth Doctor says to Wilf: 'It's not like I'm an innocent. I've taken lives. I got worse. I got clever. Manipulated people into taking their own', I always think of the dark, chess-master Seventh Doctor. (Which, I kinda love a Dark Doctor, so...)❤ (Also, IMO, the Seventh Doctor DID have a reaction to destroying Skaro, it was just a dark intentional reaction, where he meant to trick them into hurting themselves -- not remorse. With Jodie's Doctor, it never feels intentional, she doesn't feel sad/remorseful or vindicated/successful....she just doesn't seem have ANY sort of reaction at all? Like nothing happened. I don't know, maybe it's me, but that feels very different to what the Seventh Doctor did in this story. But obvs, YMMV.)

So when it originally wider the conclusion to Remembrance was heavily criticised by fans for having Sylvester McCoy's Doctor 'casually' wild out Skaro. By comparison with Tom Baker agonising over his moral right to wipe out the Daleks. I've always interpreted the Doctor's change in attitude to his simply sick of all the death and destruction left in their wake. I don't really have a problem with the ending, but what do you Gallifrey Gals think?

For many years Remembrance was considered probably a top 3 story of all of the classic era, topped most polls that were done during the 80s and 90s... and with good reason - it IS one of the best, ever! Yes, Sylvester's Doctor got a lot of hate... maybe more than other Doctors, maybe not. I think a lot of that fell on his first season, which was not written for his character. Once they got into their groove, he hit a lot of goals, despite being quite a "different" Doctor to those we'd seen before. And yes - the budgets were cut again and again, time slots moved, formats changed... as soon as Tom left, basically, the BBC Execs wanted WHO to be outsourced, and tried their hardest to kill it off. The episode count fell several times, with Sylvester only getting 14 x 25min episodes for each of his 3 seasons, or equiv to 7 modern episodes. Love the reveal of the girl, and Davros - both of your reactions were great. :)

Some suggestions for something else to react to once you get caught up with NuWho and/or "Star Trek: TNG" : - Maybe check out more Classic Who stories, but focus on those First and Second Doctor stories that only had surviving audio and possibly one complete live action episode that still existed, and which have since been animated (for instance, my recommendation would be the Second Doctor's first story "Power of the Daleks" - "Blake's 7" ; a neat sci -fi show from between 1978 and 1981 that was kind of a precursor to "Firefly" in a way; it's also one of those shows where they had first actors on it that you see and go "Oh wow! It's THAT guy/gal!" - "Red Dwarf" : I've already recommended this in another video's Comments section. I just think you two would enjoy a great sci-fi show that was also a hilarious comedy.

I can only guess that those who didn't like Sylvester Mccoy's Doctor just gave up after Series 24; or they were upset about how shabbily Colin Baker was treated. McCoy himself said that when a new Doctor is cast, it's like trying to turn around a battleship. That's because they don't know how the new Doctor's personality should best fit the new actor and the old scripts that are left over are written for the previous Doctor. In my opinion, although Series 24 starts out at a low point, each story gets better and better until it reaches 'Remembrance of the Daleks.' By that time, Sylvester Mccoy's Doctor has become everything that we've come to love. Great story, and watching your reactions to it made it enjoyable on a whole new level! Nice work!

They also had to get Sylvester past the clunky Pip and Jane Baker story that started him off, writers who -- according to Cartmel -- were basically 'grandfathered in' at that point. After that, Cartmel cleared the decks and brought in all new and fresh writers (even Cartmel himself was around 28 years old). And I think that worked wonders for the show. ❤

Excellent in many ways, but *so* many threads to it that their smug little "oh, and after we've finished up here we're going to conquer your home world, Doctor" gets forgotten!). So while it's definitely the Time Lords who fire first in "Genesis", the Daleks have already tried to fire back.

If you get a chance to watch Tom Baker's 'The Robots of Death', keep an eye out for the actress playing Rachel as one of the main characters - 11 years between her two appearances on Doctor Who!

@@stephenhumphreys9149 It's a bit dated, but definitely was one of my fave shows growing up! (Also, fun fact: it was co-created by Bob Baker, who not only wrote several Classic Who stories, but also was basically the creator of K-9, the Autons, and, relevant to today's story, the Time Lord Omega!) ❤

That's cool (or should I say 'wicked'). I saw them at a convention many years ago - the thirtieth anniversary Panopticon. They were really good together, very natural and fun to listen to. Sophie was telling a story about an audition for a show where she had to have her.. assets measured and there was a camera failure as she spoke - McCoy reacted instantly and just shouted 'The cameraman's fainted!'.

Yep, 'Cat People' (and cats -- some real, some animatronic) are in 'Survival' -- the final Classic Who story (aside from the TV Movie later on).

Hey there, just curious. The next season of Vox Machina is coming out (& Rick & Morty is already out but it's understandable if you don't want to continue supporting that show), will you wait until after all of Steven Universe to return to it for animated fridays?

The reveal that the Dalek Emperor was in reality, Davros was a shock and for me a big disappointment I was not so keen on the Dalek stories after Death to the Daleks once Davros came into Dr Who as the creator of the Daleks.

13:10 - many people don’t like Sylvester’s first series because there was more of a comedy “vibe” to it. I think opinions are starting to turn on it now and it’s good “switch your brain off” entertainment.

I always liked Sylvester McCoy as The Doctor. I just didn't like the stories. The writing wasn't up to par, with the major exception being Remembrance of the Daleks.
@RopeDrink

Quite a lot of stories had good writing. The problem was execution - because the stories were often too ambitious for their own budget. Remembrance has a simple plot, great pacing, lots of action, throwbacks, and overshot its budget. Objectively, it's the best bridge between New and Classic, and a testament to what we could have expected if the BBC didn't hate their own show so much - but it was not a sole exception in terms of writing.
