I have loved Skeeter for Many Decades. I was picking up my youngest daughter from a 4-H Club meeting. I did a double take when I saw the name Skeeter Davis on one of the girl's jackets. She did a bunch of duets with Bobby Bare.

I remember hearing "End of the World" by Skeeter Davis on Milwaukee Top 40 radio station WOKY in 1962. I didn't know about Country radio stations which were non existed in east central Wisconsin at the time. I became familiar with it as an Oldie played on Country station KNIX in Phoenix and KHOS in Tucson in the 1970's. Today Sun City West, Arizona, radio station 103.1 KSCW plays it as an Oldie and an Easy Listening song. It's very versatile! The Herman's Hermits version was equally popular, going to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, likely because it was the flip side of "I'm Henry VIII, I Am" which was a monster novelty hit for the Hermits in 1965. WOKY played "Henry the VIII" at 5 PM during afternoon drive every day during the record's hit period. I tuned in The Mighty 92 every afternoon at 5:00 and listened and sang along!

There is a comment regarding the "unusual accent" of Peter Noone. We find nothing unusual. It is slightly flat (not in the musical sense), probably because he comes from Manchester. Otherwise it is perfectly "bog standard" English, to distinguish it from Welsh, Scottish, or the lilting tones of the Ulster Irish. I am told that the character in the US sitcom 'Frasier' is a Manchester actress so you can check. I did not hear this version of this beautiful song 'back in the day' ; for some reason not even Skeeter's version made much of an impact over here in the UK. Pity.

I prefer the Herman's Hermits' version too. Skeeter's version is too elementary..
