After the heaviness of the last video… this was a welcome change of pace and many of you have been asking for this one. I love this song but much prefer the longer studio version… but as Jamel says in the end of this video… this version is the one you want to see, the studio version is the one you want to hear. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Enjoy!

@@Gromit801 WRONG! Alvin Lee couldn't play any where near what Jan Akkerman played here! Jan Akkerman was playing like this in 1969 in another band from Holland called "Brainbox" the drummer was also in that band. This original band of Focus has some live bootlegs from the 1971/1973 era that is mind blowing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGO0gX2eaNtgp7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3nFdqyIr9x-pJY

Thank you WonderMomma for playing the original "Hocus-Pocus" at the end. People will understand even more or not, how brilliant they were by playing this 7 minute piece in just 4 minutes (on the spot by the way), requested (ordered) by the producers. You are one hell of a editor, millions of kudos.

Thank you for posting this. I was in college when this record came out and I was an instant fan. I was lucky enough to be living in a city that was part of the tour Focus did in support of the album. It makes me proud that people are still listening to Focus and that young people are still blown away by the talent of this group.

Forget this legendary performance for (just) a minute ... your gathering of the various reactions (85% of which I had seen already) and juxtaposing the amazed hilarity of the reactors was a magnificent concept, and a real treat ... and then, TO TOP YOURSELF, you showed people that you had to be about as dextrous (and crazy) as Thijs to make a video of an assemblage of reactions to a video! This song is unique and has its own place in modern music ... this video has earned itself a special place as well. Thank you, and a standing O to you.

Dutch legends with a Musician Masterclass ……. First standing ovation at the Midnight Special!!!! They had to shorten their song because there was a small timeslot they got, they refused to shorten it so they sped things up! Thijs van Leer on keyboard and flute, Pierre van der Linden on drums, Bert Ruiter on bass and the best guitarplayer ever, according to Brian May of Queen, Jan Akkerman ……. These are fantastically skilled musicians

These guys were from Amsterdam, so it was a kind of culture shock for the music charts back in '73. I was 10 when it came out, and remember it on the radio from time to time. In the United States and Canada the song peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 the weeks of June 2 and 9 in the US and No. 18 in Canada during the spring and summer of 1973.

I have to add a comment that, while we all can appreciate the creativity and sheer outrageous fun of this song, I noticed how few of the commentators actually noted the incredible musicianship on display here. I am wondering if that is a difference between this era of listening and some earlier ones. When me and my friends heard this song when it first came out we would compliment this song in the same way these folks are but would also marvel at what great playing on display here and we frequently did that on the songs of that time that showed incredible skills.

Truthfully, I haven't heard them for years and I've never seen that particular appearance or that accelerated version before but I can say this: Part of me, the part of me that contains those old memories is proud of Focus for having put out such a unique and quality sound that today, 50 years later, it's still blowing peoples minds...that's fuckin' rock-and-roll!

The 'Fairy Voice Mother' must have just come in under the radar, and I consider her one of the best. I'm guessing you may have already seen her reaction anyways, but if you haven't go and check it out!

It was a 7 minute song jammed into a 4 minute slot. People loved the sped up version so much that they never played the original 7 minute version again.

You need to check out the original version. I love that they refused to shorten it for the performance and squished it up instead! Check the original for comparison. I bought this as a 45 when it first came out I was 14!

Great choice. I always wonder though if people who have never heard the song before can follow the live version, because it's as they said purposely compressed to suit TV time restrictions. Anyway I really enjoyed it, and as I was watching "the making of" section I was surprised (and sort of gratified as I also physically write a lot in keeping myself organized) how much of your process is analog.

Thank Mickey... I know what you mean. I do prefer the studio version over this one... but this video is quite entertaining. I also have a huge fear of robots taking over my life... 😅😂 if that makes sense, so if analog still works and is practical, I absolutely prefer it! So much of everything we do these days is technology based. I remember the time when we didn't need ANY of this stuff to survive. My, how times have changed. lol
