This is my favorite Brutal death metal band of all time! I have a battle vest and I couldn't have anything else but the None So Vile album artwork backpatch... nothing can compare to me... and your right Cryptopsy loved Suffocation and had a huge influence to this band! Lord Worm (1st vocalist) is now an English teacher in Montreal Quebec Canada. His lyrics are insanely hard to understand but when you take the time to decipher the lyrics it's not hard to realize he became an English teacher.

Cryptopsy's great; I've seen them live a lot (probably more than 10 times) and they're just as intense and precise live as they are on recordings. Their drummer, Flo Mournier, is a living legend these days. He still blasts like no other and was one of the first death metal drummers to experiment with what he called "rim shots" at the time (IE: a gravity blast) for more speed back in the early 2000's. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, as he is old friends with a drummer I was in a band with for a few years; they met on Cryptopsy's first cross Canada tour when my buddy was 14 years old and already blasting like a monster in his brother's death metal band who opened for Cryptopsy. This album's technicality is even more impressive when you realize this was recorded in the late 90ies with a relatively small budget, so excessive takes, triggers, overdubbing and all the digital effects that make recording an album these days less like playing live weren't really an option for them. Their next two albums, "Whisper Supremacy" and "And Then You'll Beg" even more so than this album really laid the foundation of modern tech death with even more experimentation, complexity and time signature changes, although they no longer had Lord Worm on vocals for those albums all the way back in 98 and 2000 respectively. "None So Vile" is still my favorite Cryptopsy album, probably my favorite death metal album, though; the crushing riffs, Lord Worm's incoherent yet unique and brutal vocal delivery and Flo's amazing drumming can't be beat. Dan (Lord Worm) is also probably my favorite lyricist too; his sense of poetic style makes the dark lyrical content even more disturbing. He has a way with words that seems closer to a late 19th century English poet than a death metal lyricist. Unfortunately, a lot of what made Cryptopsy who they were was from one of their founding members, Jon Levasseur, the guitarist on this album. He left the band shortly before "Once Was Not" was released, when Lord Worm returned to do vocals for one last album. He did play with them live for that tour for a bit, but he didn't write any of the material for that album, so it isn't quite as good as what came before. He did rejoin the band for one more album too, though; the self-titled album in 2012, which is also one of my favorite Cryptopsy records. Jon was disappointed with Cryptopsy's previous album (The Unspoken King, widely regarded as their worst album by their fans, myself included) and rejoined just for that one album to remind Cryptopsy what the band was really all about. After he left the band again they've recaptured some of their old sound again, but Levasseur is a truly unique talent and songwriter, so it still pales in comparison to their material with Jon writing with the band. They're about due for another release sometime soon, as the last time they released any new material was in 2018.

Flo is top 2 favorite drummer of mine, but I don't think he fits into the "precise" attribute, neither live nor in studio. He constantly tries to do blasts beats slightly faster than hes able and falls behind. And when hes at the limit, it gets quiet and a little sloppy. But as a fan, thats actually something I enjoy about his drumming.
@ninjagrinder

Jon Levasseur had to write and contribute to Once Was Not, otherwise it wouldn't sound the way it does. He can be seen playing EARLY OWN material in Flo's DVD, even shots for a documentary. The whole band performs a OWN medley, with some differences in arrangements. And this was shot in 2004 and we all know the album was released in 2005. He didn't PLAY on the album with the exception of the intro song, but his mark can definitely be heard on the album's songwriting.

A great reaction :) None So Vile is one of the crown jewels of Technical Death Metal. My opinion is that it is a bit of a "magnum opus curse", because in terms of Tech-Death, it's really difficult to top. So Cryptopsy changed in time. Nonetheless, their live shows were and still are insane (although not as much as when Lord Worm offered the crowd live worms to eat). That was a good pick! A bit softer into, but Slit Your Guts and Phobophile are two songs that you must not miss: perfect musicianship.

Wait, live worms? I don't think I'd be a fan of adding that to my diet. But I guess to each their own priorities. The song was great though and I'm sure the entire album is too. I'll write your requests down. /Andrei

A little bit of history... This exact LP Non so Vile being released in the very 1996 became cult classic immediately. But what matters the most are 3 factors: 1) This is a Canadian band. The Hell I would like to know the answer, but the Canadian wilderness somehow slowly but surely drives the most talented string-slappers of Canada out of their minds. The sickest, most mental and pure mad extreme music comes right from the lands of white bears and maple syrup since Rush. After Rush there were Voivod that begun from rather odd thrash, later mutated to some kind of inerdimensional monster. And they opened the Gates to all kinds of sound-abominations onto this planet. Clinically ill schizophrenic Sylvain Houde and his Kataklysm begun their unholy underground crusade and with their very first records up from wild demos till 1996 Temple of Knowledge pushes the limits of extreme death as far as they could. But with every record THEY drained Houde's soul bit by bit up till he has to be kept in asylum. ...but the fallen flag was picked by a new challenger to push extreme boundaries even further. Their name was Cryptopsy. 2) And lo, in luly 1996 a new extreme staple was born: Non so Vile. Times passed, newer and more advanced and sick music were produced, especially in frozen depths of Canadian forests... But as time passes, the more thou could notice, that this exact record became a blueprint for every new extreme band out there. Non so Vile was torn by every single sound and adopted by countless numbers of copycats and more talented musicians. Every atonal riff, every breakdown, every single drum hit - you can here it everywhere like an atoms, formed by the Big Bang. 3) The fun fact: when every instrument was recorded, they were short on studio session days. But the most challenging factor to finish this record sessions was Lord Worm, their singer and lyricist. He slept dead-drunk all the time and at the very moment, when only vocals left...he once again was boozed. But time runs short and they have to do something. And so, with slaps and curses, Lord Worm was placed into voice cabin to record at least something. This SOMETHING you can hear in the final mix as a so called vocals. he was this drunk, no any word could be distinguished. But on the other side, we get the 2nd most brutal human voice ever recorded right after clinically mad Sylvain Houde.

I'm not sure about point number 3, while there may be some truth to it as Dan loves to drink, even more-so back in the day and he probably did record drunk, his performance wasn't affected. Look at his performances on their first full length "Blasphemy Made Flesh" and the "Ungentle Exhumation" demo both preceding None So Vile which are very similar to his performance on None So Vile, if not slightly even less refined. Not only that, but there's video footage of the band practicing from that era (1996) playing the entire album, and Lord Worm's performance is very similar to what they recorded. You can also look at live performances from that era for comparison too. I talked to Dan back in the early 2000's about his vocal style and he confirmed it was definitely an artistic choice to throw pronunciation out the window in favor of producing more brutal, inhuman sounding vocal tones. That being said, I wouldn't doubt that they were short on time or that he was passed out drunk in the studio when it was time for him to record... But to claim that it is the reason his vocals sound the way they do on the album is a huge leap in logic with very little proof in favor and a lot of proof against.

@@felipegiraldo8100I just happened across this comment, so sorry for performing thread necromancy, but I did want to point out... Dan loves to drink. A lot. Especially in this era, for instance a story he likes to tell to this day is how he almost died from getting so drunk on a cold, winter night that he passed out OUTSIDE IN THE SNOW. He almost froze to death and his body temperature has been abnormally low ever since. So, yeah, he did drink like a fish. He still loves beer. He was a brew master for brewery in Quebec before he was an English teacher, too.

Every fan of every band on every video about that band will tell you what I am about to tell you... But please listen to None So Vile start to finish. One song isn't justice. A few songs into the album and you piece together their flavor and how it all comes together. You are right about lots of riffs and an...interesting... vocalist. But Flo ties it all together really well by accentuating a lot of cool moments, and often, and carries melodies on his own at points. Its a REALLY fun album. Some of the best parts is when they slow everything down like halfway through Dead and Dripping =]

Yeah, we know if you take the time to dig into a full album your perception of it changes. But like you said, literally everyone asks us to do this. And I really appreciate your being aware of that. So many people are oblivious and get pissed off about wanting their request uploaded yesterday and it's just not plausible. So I'll take your word for it but won't promise on listening to the entire album. /Andrei
