People always talk about how the guitar and vocals are doing a call and respond during the break in the middle, but the drums and bass are doing the call and respond with each other too. This song is so cool

I was college in the winter of 1969. My roommate and I went to the record store and bought this album and took it back to our room to listen to it. When it got to this song, I felt I wanted to hide under the bed it was so creepy…. Parts of it reminded me of the soundtracks of horror films back then. I love it now but oh man back in 1969 there was NOTHING else remotely like this out there. It blew our minds.

I have always preferred studio recordings over live ones. The sound quality first of all is far superior. Secondly, Zeppelin especially improvised a lot in live performances, not always with good results. Third, the studio recording is what the artists themselves considered the best arrangement and production of their work.

I nominate that instrumental part as one of the great instrumental parts in rock history. Jimmy was red hot, but the drum track is out of control. The group was so tight during that instrumental part where the tempo went berzerk.

What I don't understand is why no one seems to remark on the fact that the signature, kind of "spooky" part after he says "created below" and every other time you hear Plant doubling the guitar with a high pitch scream! Listen closely; that's Plant singing that refrain in a high note along with the instruments!

I know you guys may have already recorded the two separately, but if not, may I suggest you do 'Black Mountain Side' and Communication Breakdown' together in one sitting. It may just be my opinion, but the juxtaposition of the two styles and how 'Communication Breakdown' erupts out of the soft, yet abrupt, ending of 'Black Mountain Side' is deliberate... so listening to one without the other, especially when experiencing the whole album, just wouldn't FEEL right. My two cents anyway. Keep rockin', you guys are a blast.
