I've been watching Cybermen stories since the Seventies, but they always looked to me like actors in shiny suits so never came across as remotely scary. Right up until this episode when Steven Moffat (and friends) managed to make the most basic of Cybermen designs absolutely horrifying and terrifying. "Pain. Pain. Pain....."

I think for me this episode of like having the partial transformation, with Bill having a giant unknown apparatus sticking out of her chest gave enough body horror to combat the usual silliness some earlier monster designs had.

The title is from the poem To His Coy Mistress (pub. 1681) by Andrew Marvell which starts "Had we but world enough and time, This coyness, lady, were no crime. We would sit down, and think which way To walk, and pass our long love’s day."

Paula, at 10:35 pounding the air in triumph "I caught ALL the signs this time Katrina!" ...(11:47 happens) um, yeah, about that... Also, Gomez's take will always be my favorite Master but gotta give JohnSimms full props - the way he reinvented the character will forever influence how the Master is interpreted going forward. And in this episode he exactly walked the line of recognizeability so that the 1st time I watched it the reveal caught me totally off guard, but upon rewatching you can just hear the John Simms in the voice.

I seem to recall being spoiled that John Simm was gonna be in it, but I didn't catch that that had been him in disguise until the reveal, and I remember being in total disbelief that it had been him the whole time. The concept of a Multi-Master story was so exhilarating, and I still love everything about it.

FYI - the Conversion 'Theater' comes from the 18th/19th century term "Operating Theater" where surgeries were conducted large open (non-sterile) rooms in front of an audience of the curious who gathered (and paid!) to see (living) bodies cut into. Medical students learned surgical techniques too in operating 'theaters'. The expression mostly survives today in the UK

One of the things i really really like about this episode is how it unifies the various incarnations and histories of the Cybermen over the past 50+years (From Mondas, Telos, or Earth? With a vulnerability to gold, or without a vulnerability to gold?) -- not by retconning anything -- but by ever so slightly expanding the notion of what the Cybermen are: A predictable outcome of what humans become -- wherever they are -- if/when they decide to trade their humanity for longevity. So clever.

Like Katrina, I've been waiting for Paula's reaction to this one. The title is from the first line of the poem 'To His Coy Mistress' by Andrew Marvell. " Had we but world enough, and time..." Paula: "This guy reminds me of someone". Me: MWAH HA HA HA!!! When I first saw the ending, it felt like a knife to the gut. After all this time, it still affects me. I think this two-parter is one of Steven Moffat's best DW stories. Unfortunately, the John Simms and Cybermen reveals were spoiled for me, but it didn't hurt my enjoyment of the story. It still worked!

This episode, series of episodes of this season hit me close to home at the time it aired. I had just had a major surgery, a transplant, was literally in recovery and seeing Bill walking around with all that stuff hooked up to her was incredibly uncomfortable to watch since again that was me not long before this episode at the hospital. I could imagine the smells of elastic, medicine, medical machinery plastic etc, just ugh. But what a way to finally play on the body horror elements of the Cybermen, which hadn't been done in a while up until then with them, aside from the season 8 finale doing something cool with them. Watching Bill both get shot and then, converted was and still is heartbreaking, this companion's suffering affected me far more than Amy, Rory and Clara, wow, still uncomfortable to watch. I already knew how Paula was going to react, I was like "aw shit we finally got to these episodes"

In Classic Who there were two occasions on the "Who" name in The First Doctor story the computer villain WOTAN says "Doctor Who is required" in the serial "The War Machines" and The Second Doctor referred to himself as Dr. W in "The Underwater Menace" although not considered canon in The Cushing Dalek films The Doctor is a human inventor called Dr. Who and Who was his surname. Yes Mondas is the original home planet of the Cybermen I believe this is the first time we see The Cybermen from our universe. You mentioned Ainley yes his Master did all those too but Roger Delgado the original Master also did disguises and had the goatee.

Always a delight to see people react to the John Simm reveal as it should've been done back in 2017, I'll never get over the BBC's mind-bogglingly stupid decision to spoil this in their trailers. "World Enough and Time" is genuinely one of the best episodes that Moffat has written, and quite possibly one of the best episodes of the entire revived series. The opening act is a lot of fun, it's great to see Missy get plunked into a fairly standard Doctor Who premise and made to act as the main hero, and it's clear that Michelle Gomez is having loads of fun during these scenes. She's been a lot more subdued and understated in series 10 so far, but here she really gets to let loose, from the comically over-the-top facial expressions and gestures, to the wonderful meta jokes (calling Bill and Nardole "exposition" and "comic relief" was one of my favourite gags, and it's a very accurate observation too). In general, I love the way the Doctor and Missy's relationship is explored here, you truly get the impression that for all the fighting and conflicts they've had over the years, the Doctor genuinely wants this to work and for him to have his friend back (I also enjoyed the bit where he reveals the ability of Time Lords to change their gender with regeneration to Bill, and how his pompous declaration of his species being above the primitive concept of gender is shot down by Bill noting that they're called Time Lords). I also have to credit director Rachel Talalay, returning for her third time helming a Moffat finale, for doing such a fantastic job and handling all the various twists and tonal shifts as we go from comedic self-parody to drama to flat-out sci-fi horror. The Cybermen have not been done well in new Who, but this episode finally gave them the classic story they deserved. The episode really nails the body horror element of the Cybermen, and it's clear that the original Cybermen designs from "The Tenth Planet" (actually brought back as a farewell gift for Peter Capaldi, as they were his favourite monsters) were the perfect way to explore this angle. That scene of Bill wandering around the hospital to find the primitive Cybermen calling out in pain over and over again, only for the nurse to simply turn the volume down was such a grim and horrifying moment, I was genuinely surprised it didn't get more complaints when it was first aired. At the same time, the episode nails the tragedy behind their conception in a far more effective way than something like "Rise of the Cybermen" did, where we actually explore the horrible lives the people on the lower floors lead, and from there can almost understand why becoming a Cyberman seems like the best possible option. Having established both the horror and tragedy behind the creation of the Cybermen, it makes it all the more emotionally effective to have Bill, a character we've grown to know and like very well over the last 11 episodes, be put through this whole ordeal. Obviously, Pearl Mackie is excellent in this episode, her interactions with "Mr. Razor" are surprisingly sweet and endearing, and she truly sells the sense of horror and betrayal when he leads her into the conversion theatre to her terrible fate. Speaking of "Razor", John Simm really does a phenomenal job here, he's a really funny and likeable character, making his betrayal of Bill and ultimate reveal of his true identity all the more impactful. And so, like "The Pandorica Opens", Moffat ends his finale set-up episode with a cliffhanger ending that sees every conceivable thing that could go wrong, go wrong. Bill subjected to the worst possible fate to ever befall a companion, Missy being tempted by the Master to abandon the path of redemption once again, and the Doctor being faced with his ultimate failure while his greatest enemy smiles at his misfortune. Even after the big twists were revealed in the advertising, this cliffhanger left me absolutely floored back in 2017, and it really has not lost any of its impact, from the direction, to the script, to the music (the 4-beat rhythm returns!), to the performances of Capalid, Simm and Gomez. It's a phenomenal way to end off this episode, and sets up the endgame for this era in spectacular fashion

I'm in the UK but I didn't know that John Simm was going to be in this episode. I think I was aware that the press had said he'd be returning, but I didn't know when that would be. And despite growing up with classic Who, I didn't cotton on that these were going to be Cybermen! I think the tone helped: I maybe suspected Moffat was going for something horrific that had a thematic similarity to Cybermen, like a rip-off, without considering the possibility of a prequel. This is one of the most brutal episodes that Who has ever given us. Moffat never really gave us the horror classics that might have been expected during his time as showrunner, but this one is just outstanding in my opinion. He also made the original design have an impact for a modern audience. Simm is great in this, too, and I say that as someone who pretty much hated his (or rather: RTD's) version of the Master. The premise of the spaceship being stretched in time is the sort of thing that Who should be doing more of. We get the occasional story that includes something like this, but it's not often enough. It's also just occurred to me that setting this all on a gigantic spaceship probably helped disguise from me that it was the original Cybermen; if it had been on a planet somewhere, then I would've been wondering if it was Mondas.

So the BBC released the news to stop the leak. That's why we can't have nice things. But anyway great reaction and a massive shame Series 10 is nearly over and Capaldi's last dance. This episode showed us some of Moffatt's best form. Even though he id have his up's and downs due to Karen Gilllan leaving early and Smith leaving soon after. I would take Moffatt's era over Chibnall's era any day of the week. Can't wait to see the next two reactions. It's going to be a ride and a half.

iirc the BBC spoiled Simm's Master return and the fact it would be the first multiple Master story, many months earlier, with a quote from John himself about returning to the role because his son wanted him to do it. They also spoiled us about the original Cybermen returning and again in the series trailer and again in the episode trailer. Still very much enjoyed it, but would have loved to have been surprised - would have been the biggest reveal or two ever, since River Song, but the BBC took that away from us. On Mondas they turned into cybermen, in which they reversed the course of Mondas to return to Earth (tenth planet). On they way back they seeded several tomb worlds (tomb of the cybermen, and the 80's book called Cyberman by David Banks. He collected all the story's of the cybermen and made a timeline of the cybermen) So the ship is an offshoot of Mondas showing that time will always make them be cybermen.

The costume is a remake of the original Cybermen costume from way, *way* back in 1966 and "The Tenth Planet." And the Doctor's incarnations have hung out together all the time...why not a couple of the Master's?

I hadn't noticed any spoilers, but being so familiar with Anthony Ainley's Master's disguise fetish, I started attempting to penetrate John Simm's disguise early on, plus I thought that I recognized his voice. Since I saw The Tenth Planet on it's first showing, and it's novelization is also a favourite, I guess that I kind of spoiled myself!

Cornwall have it right. Cream on top of jam. This carefully considers that there’ll be less ‘jam stain potential’ if all goes horribly wrong when you bite into the scone! Damned clever them Cornish. Oh yeah, this is a great episode and reaction. And you have to be a dyed in the wool Whovian to note as Paula did, that Bills tears are responsible for the ultimate Cybermen’s eye shape. How was the U.K. Paula? Any notable difference from last time you were here, Covid regs notwithstanding?
@MortalRequiem
@MortalRequiem 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the Devon method means that the cream adheres more easily to the scone, rather than to a slick jam surface where there's more likely to be cream slippage. I do also prefer the Cornwall way myself though, you don't really taste the jam properly if it's on top.

In the absence of clotted cream the usual alternative is butter/margarine, and I don't think anybody would spread jam on a scone _before_ putting the butter on. It's always puzzled me why clotted cream should be any different.

@@ftumschk Exactly! But can you have the triple layer effect of butter, jam and then cream? I would demur because I am living proof that there is such a thing as ‘too much fat’.

"Clara died 6 times" I mean, technically every death clara had could have actually taken place after the events of Heaven Sent. When she has a tardis of her own. It was just her throughout time, she couldn't die each time and was believed to die each time because she was stuck between a single heart beat. As she said to Me (Maisie Williams) that hey had wiggle room before returning to Gallifrey, the long way round.

Not quite right about the leak. Daily Mail (or some such) had proof he was appearing in the series, so BBC made a series trailer that ran after the 1st episode that included John Simm as it was already 100% going to be in the press anyway.

As much as I'm a Moffat fan, this time I was pissed off at what happened to Bill! She was so great, and if this was her 'destiny', Damn!!! I'm still confused by the Master/Missy timeline. Is Missy the next version after his, or are there others?

Yeah, while I'm a MASSIVE Moffat stan, sadly that was two black companions in a row becoming Cybermen on his watch. And while I was glad on one hand that they legit put the companion in peril here (as companions often have 'plot armor' on the show), the track record for black companions was not so great again (and I know that for many black fans I know, this was the last straw for them after Mickey, Martha, Danny, and Bill). :(

I think Doctor Who Magazine confirmed that Missy is directly after the Saxon Master. There was a piece of prose with the Doctor and the Master talking and they say Missy was a past incarnation.
