This two-part finale is not just the best Cybermen story of Modern Who, but one of the best Cybermen stories ever. These two episodes offer the perfect examination into what makes the Cybermen a true threat; 'World Enough and Time' shows us the grotesque body horror, while 'The Doctor Falls' shows us how truly relentless and never-ending they are. Bringing back the original 1966 Mondasian versions was a stroke of genius by Steven Moffat, taking what can be considered a ridiculous old design and making it sting, and that design is probably now my favourite Cyberman design alongside the 80's versions. Also, bringing back John Simm's Master and pairing him with Michelle Gomez's Missy was a great bonus. This was a great start to Capaldi's final adventure.

So the Cybermen exist in 2 forms. The original classic "Mondasian" Cybermen from the Planet Mondas, and also the Alternate Reality "Pete's Earth" Cybermen from the other dimension. The Mondasian Cybermen were the ones that existed all the way through the classic era with various design changes through the classic Doctors. For most of the David Tennant and Matt Smith era it was the Alternate Dimension cybermen that had crossed over to our reality which we saw. By the end of Matt Smith's run, the episode 'Nightmare in Silver', it's explained that the Cybermen of Mondas and the Cybermen of the Alternate Earth found each other and created a hybrid race of Cybermen to explain their most recent design upgrade. World Enough and Time is the first time we've actually seen the original Mondasian Cybermen since the classic era, and the first time using the original design since the First Doctor.

John Simm, Bill's VISCERAL wound and what follows, the idea of ship that's moving at different speeds in time and whole generations of society being built at the back of it over two days, Missy's test, the Doctor regeneration (even if Lie of the Land ruined the impact of it a little). These are my favourite Cyber-Men easily. Like yeah, the newer ones look cooler but the idea of Cyber-Men is that they are meant to be Cyborgs, wanting to upgrade them selves and they eventually loose all sign of what they once were. I guess the new ones are a natural conclusion but they are more or less Robots at that point. They might as well just make Robots to fight instead of upgrading people with the new ones. For Cyber-Men to be effective you have to have some sign of what they once were and with the bandage like cloth thing over their head and the broken up monotone voice that they have sells it for me. They are creepier than the newer ones because they are not yet so far removed from human but yet removed enough. The Uncanny Valley. The Rustle T.Davis Cyber-Men accomplished this in the stories they told, especially with the one that they knocked out that was talking about how it was her wedding night. We have to be aware their is people in them but when I watch Nightmare in Silver I don't get that impression.

The Mondasian cybermen are easily my favorite version of the cybermen. Essentially there are two types of cybermen: Medical and mechanical. Whereas I feel a lot of New Who stories miss the main point about Cybermen, despite them always talking about "uprgrades", which is that Cybermen are created to preserve life! The Medical cybermen or the Mondasian cybermen do exactly that! While the suit we see Bill inhabiting doesn't exactly scream practicality, it does preserve life! While the modern Cybermen slice people up and stuff them into slow and bulky suits Cybermen might be my favorite villains in Doctor Who and specifically because of the gutpunching "I....waited...for.....you". Cybermen are straight up terrifying, if done right, and when they are done right they are easily scarier than Daleks.

captlaserrage well the Cybus cyber-men weren’t built with that purpose. Lumin had a terminal illness that crippled him so he created the cyber men as a new race that would remove the weakness of emotion and illness, unlike the mondasions which did it for survival. @recker1984 жыл бұрын
@@Pablo-hj1rt S11, thought was ok, wasn't the worst thing in the world as I had heard, but it felt too innocent? nothing felt dangerous to me, but I love 13 as much as the other doctors, she clicked with me since that spider episode actually. Recker At the time of airing I really wasn’t feeling S11 as a whole, but it had its individual moments for sure. I thought The Ghost Monument, Demons of the Punjab, It Takes You Away and Resolution were particularly strong and Rosa was by far my favourite of the series. But other than that, the others just fell a little flat for me and by the end I still wasn’t really sure if I liked 13 or not, I was so back and forth with her. As for S12, I loved both parts of Spyfall and it’s great to see a darker side of 13 starting to challenge her ‘childlike’ personality she had before that. That’s such a shame you had those moments spoiled for you, I really didn’t see the Master reveal coming it totally took me by surprise, and I really like Sacha’s take on the role. As for the other 2 episodes, I thought Orphan 55 wasn’t the best (you may think differently) but the Tesla one was really fun, and the guy who played him did a great job. Thinking back on it, I never particuarly felt much excitement from this season either. Although, I think that the First Doctor's appearance might get at least something out of the three of them. Shane has seemed far less interested in the show since Matt Smith left, with only a few episodes catching any kind of reaction out of him. Calvin seems more critical or disappointed by the episodes than the others, which makes sense due to his ties to Classic Who. And Eric seems to still have decent optimism for the show, but still less than he previously had. All of these are just parts of real reactions to a show that is bent on being everchanging. Besides, just wait till their reactions to the next season- it might be hard to see.

Mondas was earths twin planet which became unable to support life so they turned themselves into the Cybermen these Mondasian Cybermen were the Original That first appeared in the First Doctor Final story The Tenth Planet when Peter Capldi was announced as leaving he asked if they could bring the Mondasian Cybermen back for his final few episodes this was big because this was the first time since there first appearance back 1966 outside of Audiobooks

I’m watching this again after FailWhale’s reaction to it went up, and I gotta say, I don’t think I’ll ever again be able to look at Bill with that gaping hole in her stomach without hearing “SHE’S A DONUT!” ringing in my ears. 🤣

My favourite DW story 💚 I wasn't spoiled by the trailers like many people were at the time; so realising little by little they were making Cybermen (and Mondasian ones, no less!) was freaking a-ma-zing!
@oldwebshooter4 жыл бұрын
I think it's really shitty to shit on the mythology by calling the classic ones 'shitty'. They may have not been able to make more of the costumes, but they accounted for it in the mythology that they were supposed to be only a third machine. Which is a failing of the new era that they're basically robots with human brains.

They didn't try to hide the Cybermen that well. They had already spoiled that we would see the Mondas Cybermen in this episode. They did that to hide the fact that they got Simms back to play The Master. While everyone was busy looking at all the Classic Who stuff on the screen, they hid him right in front of us.

The first Doctor went to Mondas and encounter the Mondasian cyberman there. Since then, we've seen the more "upgraded" version
@michaelbruce23724 жыл бұрын
actually the first doctor met the mondosian cyberman in antarctica not mondas. in this story they reviewed this is a colony ship escaping mondas and the big finish story spare parts has the 5th doctor and nyssa going to mondas before the the events of the Tenth Planet where the first Doctor met the modosians in antarctica. its also the first story that the cybermen appear on doctor who. you;ll see...lol At some point before their planet was destroyed in the Tenth Planet they sent this colony ship out and left a colony of cybermen frozen on the planet telos(or perhaps the colony was left there after this story? OR cybertech arose independently on Telos...does anyone know this for sure?). the 2nd doctor found them... every appearance of the cybermen in classic who likely come from the release of the cybermen on telos. In new who you have the pete's world dimension cybus cybermen who eventually merged with the original classic mondosian/telosian cybermen by the time of Nightmare in Silver.... in a nutshell. technically the 5th Doctor story Five Doctors had Telosian cybermen descendants and the design was radically different. the design i this episode was only seen in the Tenth Planet which is the first doctor's (William Hartnel) last story

These are how cybermen are meant to look. They were never meant to be robots they were originally basically cybernetic zombies, walking corpses with no emotions. The whole point was finding a way to survive, not slice yourselves up into white flakes and inhabit a tank, and so the more medical/shroud look of these cybermen fit.
@ms_scribbles4 жыл бұрын
Heh, yeah, that's definitely a fault of Moffat's writing. I appreciate the wish to surprise, but when you throw the same thing out repeatedly as a surprise, like death/regeneration, the audience stops believing it, and the emotional impact is gone.
@dutchman88874 жыл бұрын
rtd did the same. lots of teasing of a companion dying rose and donna being the main ones - seriously rose dies or is supposed to die even more than clara but it never gets brought up and then it never actually happening. even worse from rtd as at least moffat did it for story purposes whilst rtd just did it to create fake drama.

I usually like to rewatch the episode before seeing your reactions but I wasn’t able to do it this time .. I haven’t seen this episode in awhile but I remember this two part finale being good . It sucks that a tabloid revealed the Master’s return but what’s worse was that BBC confirmed it .. it would have been so much better if no one knew ..sigh . Anyway , I like the time dilation concept between the upper and lower decks of the ship . Missy is great as always and that ending with Bill was sad .
