Marty Robbins wrote and sang this song from 1959/1960. My adopted Dad let me play that album on his stereo back in 1962. Geoff's high vocal line can't be matched for just the purity - so good.

Geoff is not only a fantastic musician/singer/vocalist/arranger/producer... (etc.). He is a genius storyteller. Older songs often tell stories way better than songs in modern music, so the older songs match perfect with Geoff performing them. I think, I could listen for hours to something like the phone book of NYC - when Geoff would perform it in any way... 😆🥰

This is why I look forward to your reactions. Marty Robbins would be proud of this. Geoff outdid himself again. The harmonies between Geoff and his clones are out of this world.👏👍

Geoff wrote all the bridge sections for this song, which was just eight straight verses originally. And you can't see the joins! Huldra Draco has made a video comparing the two versions.

My immediate response to so many Geoff and VoicePlay songs is also to burst into tears, so I feel so vindicated every time I watch one of your reactions!

Smiled so much when I heard this. Loved Marty Robbins, and this does the song so much justice.

Before Geoff sang this I had never heard it. But if it isn't based on a movie, I bet a movie is based on it.

It's used in two video games: Red Dead Redemption 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. There are several short movies, too.

You're absolutely right, a story well told. Geoff (or maybe VoicePlay or Home Free) would be perfect to cover "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

Damn it girl! It’s kinda cute how emotional you get in these songs, but I can’t match Jeff’s voice and I’m an happily singing along for practice, glance at the screen and you turned on the water works! Then I have no idea why but my allergies kick up and my eyes tear up. Do you know how hard it is to hit a G#1 or F#1 with your eye balls sweating!!!❤

As someone else has mentioned, Geoff has adamantly said that he would NEVER do "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", because it is too repetitious as far as being verse after verse of the same melody and meter and he doesn't think he could do anything to it to make it a more appealing and engaging song, or more musically complex/interesting. But he definitely took this song and added elements that absolutely transformed it, so maybe we can just hope that some day an idea will suddenly pop into his head about how he could switch up the song to make it appealing to him. I think it could work if he would start out with just a single voice singing the first verse and then gradually building layers with more parts/harmonies coming in, and maybe (like he did with Sound of Silence) not even show the clones. Maybe even play around with the rhythm and some key modulations. And after a buildup, bring it way back down again for the last verse and a half and end with just a solo voice once more.

As great a singer and musician he is, he also narrates some classic works such as by Edgar Allen Poe.

You're not the first person to suggest Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (or other Gordon Lightfoot songs) for Geoff to cover. However that is one he has (so far!) been adamant that he is not going to cover. Can't seem to get him to bite on any other Lightfoot tunes either, unfortunately. Personally, I'd love to hear him cover Sundown or If I Could Read Your Mind.

I would assume Geoff doesn't want to take away from the royalties that all go to the families of those lost in the tragedy.

Edmund Fitzgerald is Gordon's. Personally, I don't think that anyone else could do it justice (or get through the song without breaking down. I've tried.)

Ironically I only know this song because it's one that plays in Fallout: New Vegas.... I like Geoff's version better. I'm to the point, I can't help but wonder if eventually Geoff will remix all the songs they use for "Radio New Vegas". Whether unintentionally or not.
