Jimi was the top paid act of the time and at woodstock. The organizer actually asked Jimi to go on the night before during the crowd's peak, but, according to him, Jimi wanted to close the show as planned and did so in the morning after many had left. I often wonder what it would have been like had he gone on at night, but the show we got was so perfectly legendary.

You guys gotta realize the genius in his playing..he not only played the national anthem but he made it sound like dive bombers and bombs going off..he played the chaotic sounds of war as he played it..purely amazing..he was also in the 101st airborne for a time

I'm 70, this is my anthem of my generation. I got to see Woodstock 14 nights in a row at the drive in. All for free, I knew the people at the box office. RIP Jimi, thank you. ✌Jim
@GodsUnrulyFriends2 ай бұрын
I'm acquainted with Juma Sultan, one of the percussionists who played with Hendrix at that gig. I was told that playing the national anthem was not planned or rehearsed. Hendrix just thought it up in the moment and did it (the guys in tyhe band were like "What's Jimi doing??"). I also knew a few people who were in the audience. They said the people were just staring at him in utter disbelief. I've also spoken to military veterans who said that this is exactly what a war zone sounds like. I was 11 years old in 1972. I was already a Hendrix fan, but at the time, I'd never seen a video of him. I snuck into a theater a=to see Woodstock. After three hours of the movie (and a lot of greta music), Hendrix came on and did this. I was blown away! I never imagined that music could have this kind of power. Nothing like it had ever existed before. To this day, I still get chills when I hear it. You mentioned the symbolism. At the apex of a celebration of peace and love, Hendrix played the most violent rendition of the Star Spangled Banner possible. It reminded everyone that when their idylic party ended, a savage and atavistic world awaited them. At. the same time, Hendrix stood on the world's stage, looked the most powerful nation on earth in the eye and said "You broke your covenant with God and your people." The thing he did on guitar can be learned and recreated (almost), but nobody can hold the significant weight of that statement. This belongs to nobody but Jimi Hendrix. A few FYIs. He didn't open with the SSB. This was near the end of his set. Videos of acceptable camera angles exist. You cna find them with no problem. Also, there were a lot of delays. Hendrix was the headliner and not only insisted upon closing the festival, nobody in their right mind would go on after him. Plus, this kind of music festival was unprecedented. They didn't know what they were doing; they were writing their own rules and brekaing them as they went along. To top it off, about 100,000 people more than were anticipated showed up. It was a disaster, and beautiful at the same time.

After Woodstock regarding Hendrix rendition of the SSB music critic Al Aronowitz of the NY post wrote- " It was the most electrifying moment of Woodstock and it was probably the single greatest moment of the sixties"

I heard very clearly the bombs, I heard the incoming ordinance, I heard the inbound war planes and the sounds of machine gun fire, I heard very clearly the "bombs bursting in air......" For him to create those clearly produced sounds (ie, the sounds of war machines) - and then to blend them beautifully into our National Anthem - he thus created an unprecedented artistic statement, uniquely on a genius level, and it remains an achievement to this day that is unmatched by any other musical artist. Jimi's talent was as if he was touched by God, as his recordings and performances clearly reflect. He is widely considered to be the greatest guitarist in the history of popular music

Jimi was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne in the Viet Nam war and completed his duty before Woodstock, which explains all the bombing and war sounds in his version. Note he's left handed. He had to restring his own guitar to get a left handed one. Most amazing and creative guitarist I can think of.

Great reaction y'all! I love the appreciation for this timeless, historical, classic piece of art being that I am a big Hendrix fan. A couple of things though. There is a video that shows his whole body while he's playing this on KZbin. I suggest y'all check it out. Lastly, Jimi didn't open up with this song. This was towards the end of his performance. I don't know exactly what you meant by open up but if you're talking about it as in the first song they played, this was not it. This was towards the end of their performance. Y'all really need to see this whole concert if you didn't. It was soul moving!!! All in all great reaction. 💯💪🏽✌🏽

This was a statement made. Listen to it and say the words along with him playing. Super bright almost in your face, like the "dawn's early light" To make you feel the words. And the hammer-ons make the line "galantly streaming" come to life. The main point of playing the National Anthem at all though, comes right after "rockets red glare" he mimics the literal sound of planes dropping bombs and chaos. "bombs bursting in air" sounds of sirens more chaos, almost sounds like screams at points. "our flag was still there" and playing Taps, a direct reference to the amount of soldiers that are not "still here". Mid 20s and made an anti-war statement with out using a single word. You mentioned the emotion of his face. It was a master story teller living the story he is telling in the moment. And he definitely tore it apart to make room for the implied realities of the USA in 1969. good stuff guys

Great react... You are so spot-on with your descriptions. A few notes: This isn't Band of Gypsies... It's Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. The band has Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Billy Cox (bass). Jerry Velez is on congas, but they turned his track off the final mix because he was tripping and just not in sync with the rest of the band. This performance is towards the end of his set, not the beginning. There were about 45,000 (estimate) there to watch that Monday morning, down from a cool ~500,000 at its peak. A defining moment in the turbulent late '60s. Brilliant performance! A highlight of Woodstock. Thanks for the excellent react!

Guys, there is a different clip of this performance with much, much better camera work, that concentrate more on Jimi's hands. And he did NOT open with "Star Spangled Banner". It was towards the end of the set. And this was not the Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix called the Woodstock band, Gypsysl, Son and Rainbows. This was 4 months before the Band Of Gypsys brief history.Mitch Mitchell was still behind the drums at Woodstock. Apart from 5 shows from the Band Of Gypsys, Mitch plays at every show.

Jimi was supposed to play on the Sunday night which was the LAST night of Woodstock but due to other acts taking TOO LONG and some rain, Jimi came on EARLY Monday morning when MOST of the people had gone HOME...if you watch the movie Woodstock you will see shots of the field where everybody was and it looks more or less EMPTY with everyone who was left right at the stage area. The WHOLE Star Spangled Banner is the sound of Jimi's interpretation of THE SOUNDS OF THE VIETNAM WAR!!!!
