It's so nostalgic, my childhood and many Vietnamese people also watched Journey to the West 1986 every night at 6:30 pm every week, not only Chinese people, Journey to the West is also the childhood of many Vietnamese people.

I gotta say, the story behind the filming of this TV show is really something. Not only did they have just 1 camera and significantly lacked technical equipment and skills, the actors were frequently injured during shots (whenever they had to fly, flip, etc. or had to act with fire). Meanwhile, the government kept pressuring the director to hurry up and finish shooting, because the government thought the crew was just using the show as an excuse to waste taxpayer money and fool around. Even though the show has since became a classic and loved by almost every Chinese person, the story behind it was quite bittersweet. I literally just watched a short documentary yesterday about the director, Yang Jie, which talked about how much crap she had to go through filming this show. For all of the hard work she put into the show, she is practically unknown, and the main cast even had a fall out with her. What a pity. Just imagine if the show had more time, budget, and technology.

1986 version is a classic with many Chinese and East Asians in general. I was surprised that there's a fully English dubbed version on youtube as well. It is only recently that I've discovered that 1986 version is a family friendly adaptation of the novel. The actual book is R-rated... heheh

My friend, you may not believe it, but due to some systemic reasons in China at that time, there were no private film and TV companies, and everything was filmed under the leadership of the national TV station. The CCTV leaders at that time did not support to make a masterpiece into a TV series, so if you want to shoot the funds need the crew to find their own sponsorship, the shooting equipment TV station only approved a camera, so all the footage of this drama from the beginning to the end, was shot with a camera to complete, it's incredible. That is the beginning years of China opening up reform in 1978/79. The series was officially screened in 1986, so the production was before 1986. China were poor then, one of the poorest in the world.

Some back story here for people don’t read the novel. The main villain 奎木狼 is one of the 28 gods, same as the white dragon in Dark Myth Wukong chapter 3. The princess was one of the heavenly servants and they fell in love, but she reincarnated and became a princess so he came down from heaven to reunite with her for over a decade. After returned to heaven, he was punished to help 太上老君 make Medicaments for a while and then restored his position. Later when fighting YellowBrow, he helped along with the white dragon 亢金龙 and other 26 gods. He wasn’t that bad at all, except for trying to eat somebody 😂

Bilibili removed your videos probly because you put whole episode into your reaction and the copyright of JTTW 86's version is still belongs to CCTV within the intellectual property protection time. Maybe you can cut some scenes and shorten your video to aviod.

They don't have much money to hire every single actor for each role. Also actor's salaries back in the day was very little. But this version of JTW was the best once you can find. Edit: Also you can notice female actress wear a thin fabric same color as their skin inside of the costume if the skin exposed to much. Because Chinese woman was affair to show their skin that would be appropriated in their culture.
