He obviously isn't promoting kids to do drugs, he's just showing the reality of it. It's also a metaphorical representation of himself and Trippie Redd. The song wasn't necessarily about putting out a message, it was just showing the reality of his(and lots of other peoples) life.

Dante, agreed. The message in the lyrics, “fix this damage”- the damage was created by doing things like this at an early age. The “candy” is a new synonym for drugs because younger and younger kids are doing it. It’s really sad, but I think he just put out one of the best songs of 2019.

It’s about how a lot of kids start out using their prescriptions and moving on to using other things. He’s not promoting giving kids drugs.

He’s not promoting the lifestyle or encouraging kids to go down that path. He looks depressed in the video for a reason. Pete’s joking around in the video, but he represents all of the people in the kids’ lives who are bad examples/don’t care about their wellbeing. MGK’s just saying that he’s one of many to grow up this way.

If you think about the lyrics when he says "tryna fix this damage yeah" it's MGK giving his reasoning for why he does the drugs. Plus the kid stuff seemed more like a depiction of real life and how it is.

This is my favorite song off the new album. I feel the pain in it. I left a comment on the audio for this song and told him how I felt about what he was talking about. I said stay with us, and find strength in the pain. I also told him he's got a lot of love from a lot of people and that suicide kills a lot more than the person who commits it. It kills the joy of having them around and permitantly takes away a light that temporarily struggled to shine. Much love to MGK.

@charlbrassell2001
@charlbrassell2001 5 жыл бұрын
He's a victim of his self, just like i was for most of my life, .i started from time i was 13 until i was 34, i wasn't a victim i just loved getting high on anything i could to try and numb feeling anything. just like he's said in countless interviews he doesn't care, even when breakfast club got serious and offered help, maybe with this album since hes being so open about it he finally ready to make the choice and i hope so for anyone going through the shit, i just don't like the word victim when it comes to addiction. we do it to ourselves.

@@charlbrassell2001 yes and no he was on his own at the age of nine. being trapped in a small city with the feeling of "nothing better to do" you do things on impulse not on thought process but im glad to hear you overcame. cant blame a child for mistakes based on impulse. you can blame the parents for not guiding and protecting there impulse .

Same exact upbringing ...yes parents should have been there but you can only use the didn't know any better line for so long ....hes known what he's doing to hisself for a very long time now. As I did, noone taught me a thing except the "friends" I ran the streets with, even if you wanna say at 18 he's known exactly what he's doing. Regardless how anyone gets to addiction and how long been abusing it's still addiction. And in the moment no it's not a thought process I wasn't able say why I was doing it till I was clean, but I knew exactly what I was doing to myself just didn't give a shit. He's got to want out and years ago when that kid of his was born should have been plenty of reason. Even if he still doesn't give a shit....he's not a victim of anything at this stage of his life except his choices.

I haven't read thru all of the comments but MGK made the comment that Hotel Diablo was about what's going on inside his mind. That every track is another door that steps in his mind. I think looking up the lyrics as you listen to most of his songs, or just about any song, can give you the real meaning of an artists songs. He's always been open about what's going on, and I think this album he just let lose.

He did an interview ( i want to say alt 98.7) and they talked about candy and this exact issue. He explains that in any of the songs hes made about drug abuse hes never promoted it (lead you on is a big example of this as it talks about the downfalls and his issues with heroin). He gave the melody the overall idea of the song a happy vibe to draw you in but the lyrics and feelings about it are supposed to make you pay more attention. Kells has always been this way though, even on some of his older stuff he rapped about some heavy shit but the beat doesnt go with it

Yeah I’ll chime in w some of the others. He’s def not promoting drugs to kids. The whole album is him telling his story, and using heavy drugs as a kid is part of his story. The way he acts in the video should send a clear message I think. It’s like “listen, this is all I know, all I’ve ever known. At this point I’m takin em like candy, bc I can’t be without it.” But all the while there’s no energy, joy, soul or anything good in his eyes. Just exhaustion and sadness, you know? I actually wasn’t understanding this song until the visual came through and then I was like damn that’s way deeper than I thought! Your reactions are great tho! Some of my faves so keep em coming :)

If anyone has any troubles with mental health, depression, anxiety and even stress, seek help. No one will judge you or down play you for trying to better yourself and make your life a happier place. I’ve been in that spot for years and nothing can be done but I’m coping with it the only way I know how. Regardless of who you are there’s someone out there that loves you and wants the best for you. This is honestly how I interpreted the vid, The album as he once said is his dairy, so the kid smoking really looks like young kells for a reason. And he's depressed as an older version of kells in the video cause obviously as he keeps on taking drugs it still don't help him "cause we all know it doesn't solve the problem". and that's why the chorus starts with "I'm in my head again" before he says "I took more medicine" which shows that he had or has an addiction that didn't solve the problems cause most kids looking to do it the first time thinking it would help with their problems!

MGK has been very open his whole life about his struggles with addiction and his battle on and off to get clean. The song and really just this whole album is a reflection of his life and the mental issues he’s been trying to fight. That’s why the album ends with the song “I think I’m okay.” In that song, it covers that he’s still struggling l, but the message in it is that he thinks he’s doing better.

The idea of the video (in my eyes) at least with MGK's parts is to help people understand that at a young age MGK got into the drug world and he is showing in the video that it's a real thing and its a problem. He paints visuals how they should be, he never hides things.

Also yes this record is him finally confronting his childhood demons and his life the past couple years and the struggles he has and still is going through. KELLS has always been one to put his real emotions in his work and let it be known to hopefully help save another life somewhere. He actually volunteers at a rehab in Cleveland to help others which helps him with his addictions in the process. I been rocking with KELLS since like 2011 and I have stayed a fan through it all bc it is always genuine KELLS not label KELLS

This song is so sad. These are cries for help, not bangers. I truly hope he can win this battle. I could see this battle happening and I told my husband I was getting a very scary vibe from MGK's eyes. If we had of listened to Chester singing 'One More Light' and 'Heavy' properly, we would have known Chester was going down that road too. 'Holding on, why is everything so heavy? Holding on, to so much more than I can carry. I keep dragging around what's bringing me down' and then the key line... 'if I'd just let go I'd be set free'. That part haunts me to this day. We have to learn from these losses.

I think MGK's face was the message. Like you'll end up being sad n hopeless n you'll keep doing it once you start it, n won't be able to stop. But I understand why people would be confused by the message but I guess Pete's character is an eye opener, like how people ignore young kids doing it like meh whatever.

Long time MGK fan like before he blew up. His albums tell a story, alot of it is hurt, sadness, depression etc. But alot of his older stuff like General Admission and Black Flag spreads love and asks for peace. His leak album was hinting towards this and his new album confirms he's severely depressed. Tons of people have benefited from his music, hopefully him sharing himself like an open book (hence the album cover) will continue to lift people up. Much love to you, first time here and subbed for sure.

The two kids are representing Kells and Trippie before the drugs and then it pans to them after with Pete. It shows how it made two seemingly normal, happy kids just living life into depressed and fucked up people fighting addictions (mgk and trippie). Pete is there to show how kids get the drugs from pieces of shit adults who don't think it's a big deal and just joke about it. Great fucking video.

1st song - he is talking about how kids younger and younger are getting into drugs cuz they feel it is medicine that they need to deal with life, not realizing its removing them from actually finding strength in numbers from relating to people and having friends. Song 2 - it's about how life is getting filled with darkness from losing the people close to you, that you look to for support in bad times, or for direction when you feel lost. This album is more showing that he is more human than most "heavy drip" rappers that most people listen to and its speaking about real life rather than fantasy ideas. Life is hard but you have to overcome what its put in front of you to make something great.

He is stating the harsh reality of drug use and how it went in his life. There is an interview where he describes this song better. It is actually a really dark song about the struggle

I think he's leaving it open for interpretation, more showing light on how his experience was growing up. I beilive mgk was going through a lot in this album and it shows in his songs.

I don't think he is *promoting* drug use at all but, showing the REALITY of it..🤷‍♀️ Unfortunately, kids can just go into a pharmacy and pick up cough medicines, their parents meds &, take it to get high themselves. &, throughout the whole album, he continues the story of his own battle with drugs &, hard times. With 'Candy', the song is upbeat &, catchy af BUT, you don't see him smile in the video once. That, to me, is the real message that, the drug use has damaged him. This album truly has me shedding tears for MGK..💔 You can really feel the pain behind the music. At the same time, that's why I think it's such a great album.🔥 A true artist makes you feel what they're talking about, he definitely accomplished that. 👏🏻

I thought it was showing the real sadness of drugs with a happy sounding song but depressed lyrics. It also felt kind of nostalgic. I remember smoking with the older kids and them thinking I was "actually pretty cool" and back then it was like the coolest thing that ever happened to me.

Listen to the lyrics. It's a song about how he became addicted at a young age. Sad reality alot of people start drugs at a very young age. 🤷

When i seen this music video immediately you can see right away from his facial features that how it effected him. Even though it sounds like a bop, the lyrics itself is deep. I loved this album. I felt it on so many levels. I hope that Kels is okay and sees his support group that he has. We cannot lose him. This man is wise beyond his years.

For someone who’s dealt with addiction I feel like the song was from that perspective. When you have that addiction you take drugs like candy. Once you hit that stage you’re like a kid again. For everyone struggling with pills or drugs you kind of see yourself in some of the kids.

You did misinterpret the message in Candy, though that's easy to do if you haven't been listening to MGK for a long time or aren't as aware of his background as others. The sound of the song and surface view of the video itself is easy to misunderstand, too. Everything in it is both symbolic and plain stated, yet impactful. From the sign in the pharmacy (the "good neighbor pharmacy"), Pete's headshake when the kids came in (he knew what they were up to), calling the cough syrup "lit juice" (kids think that's what drugs do - you get fucked up and things are lit), sending the kids back out to practice and try again (there are pharmacist and doctors who will push drugs on kids that aren't always necessary and they'll do it by any means), pharmacist Pete passing the blunt to the kids (again, drug industry pushing drugs to kids)... there's so much here! The lyrics themselves (it helps to just sit and read them rather than listen cause the message and the sound are opposing, but that's the point cause that, too, is symbolic. There's a lot of symbolism; you just have to catch it. Appreciate your reaction!

“Candy” - He’s not promoting it. He’s just like “Look.” And how his situation is/was too, how he started using (“F it I was raised like that - So I guess I never really changed like that”). Like a general drug use but also as shitty coping mechanism that leaves him feeling even more messed up (“I’m in my head again - I took more medicine. Ripped up the parts from my heart and my chest again” while in the video he has a dead+sad look on his face) And like, I would say, singing “candy” is like... all these drugs are so common... sadly, it’s “candy” I don’t think that he’s promoting it. In fact, maybe even really highlighting the negative. Pete Davidson is the pharmacist in this video (also MGK’s actual best friend and he struggles with similar issues) . Pete is a comedian (he’s on SNL), so I think that humor was being incorporated slightly. When Pete was sharing it with the kids, I think that was to show the casual use/perception of drugs. Even though they are DRUGS. In the video, one of the times you see MGK and Trippie Redd and Pete before the chorus/hook it’s done VERY quickly, but all three make a trigger towards their head and let their heads drop (depression, suicidal thoughts or ideation). And in Trippie’s part, “Billy and Mandy”.... I BELIEVE that’s a reference to the old Cartoon Network show. Basically it is these two kids and they are hanging out with the grim reaper (the show is “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy”, I used to watch it). So, there’s multiple death references alongside the “candy.” I hope that this ^^ shone a different perspective on that song for you.

I agree. Not necessarily that it’s promoting kids to use drugs. But more the sad fact that this is reality for far too many people. Including himself. Times get hard, sometimes you don’t know what to do but go backwards into things that once brought some sense of fun and happiness, but no longer do.

Don’t bother with trippie, this is the first song with him that ive actually enjoyed. The whole point of the song/ video is to talk about his drug use and why he uses drugs. He’s basically saying that I’m using all these drugs to combat all these awful things i deal with mentally. The kids are symbols of him at a young age and his friends when he started taking drugs to deal with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts etc. I agree that it at first it seems like it’s promoting drugs but if you know his life story then it makes more sense why the kids are in there.

I'd like to interpret the Candy video as showing that an older generation is making things worse by passing down unhealthy coping mechanisms. Idk anything about Trippie Redd's music but I think he took away from the moral that I hope this song was going for. Glass House hits home like a lot of his music. I hope he sticks to that real life shit.
