Most impressive metal song I ever heard. They were so tight its unbelievable, incredibly complex changes, that flow together beautifully. Powerful subject matter. Perfect heavy song.

Great reaction. That false ending still gets me after all these years - they/James knew that riff was special, showing off in the best possible way. "Orion", if you haven´t heard it yet.

It is so satisfying watching people discover for the first time just how awesome this band really was like I did 35 years ago when they first hit the scene. I have always loved this song. I like it better than the more popular title track. Glad you enjoyed man. Good reaction.

It’s hard to believe that I had the honor of being alive and very receptive in 1986 (18yo - eligible for draft)!when this album was released. It’s Longevity and timelessness reached a level of rarity with few peers, save possibly AC/DC Back in Black.

I was a senior in high school when the Master of Puppets album came out. I bought it on vinyl, recorded it onto a good quality cassette tape, and proceeded to wear it out on my car stereo. Every song on this album is amazing. Master of Puppets and Orion are particularly badass, but Disposable Heroes is my favorite. Later that year, I woke up with a nasty hangover, with my dad knocking on my bedroom door. He said, "this is a band you like, right?", and he handed me a clipping from the morning newspaper. It was a small clipping, not front page or anything. The article in the clipping told of a tour bus accident involving Metallica, and bassist Cliff Burton had died.

I saw Metallica back in 2013 in Detroit and let me tell you that if you think this song is epic now you should hear it played live and in person. I've been a HUGE fan of them for nearly 30 years and it was surreal FINALLY being able to see them live. I lost my shit the second they walked out on stage lol.

Hi Thomas . Please react to “ to live is to die”. My fav instrumental of theirs by far and is a tribute to bass player Cliff Burton who died in bus tragedy when band was on tour. He was only 24. This instrumental is spin chilling and epic.

The guys have said that a lot of their music comes from a core filled with anger. The music is how they redirect the anger OUT, let it burn off. Their audience identifies with the music, that's why they STILL pack arenas with multi- generational fans. Who go into participatory RIOTS during a live show. James is a master of audience control. Lewis, the young lead singer of Alien Weaponry, has that easy sense of authority and control over an audience like that too. And he's under 21. Have you heard of Credence Clearwater Revival? They have a song along this theme called Fortunate Son. If you haven't heard it, go listen!
@ThomFoolery1
@ThomFoolery1 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sandra, well said! Yeah, you can really get that energy from them. I know a lot of people don't really understand heavy rock/metal because it is 'angry' but that's really what makes it wonderful. I feel more relaxed listening to this music because I feel I'm letting out those aggression in a positive way. That's metalheads are the most level headed and nice people. Oh yes, I love 'Fortunate Son' that's a classic. Heard a few snippets of AW but need to sit down and hear more. :)

Fun little trivia about the lyrics: Originally, it was about not war, but (American) football players. Apparently Hetfield was watching some documentary or commentary about how football players would severely get injured because the team/their coach would push them past their limits, then get tossed aside when they couldn't 'serve' anymore. The severity of the situation is a bit different obviously, but both sports and war is basically young boys ordered around by big systems run by older men, after all ("Twenty one, only son / But he served us well"). Hetfield says he himself had a turning point in his life during high school when his football coach ordered him to cut his long hair and thinking he didn't want to live that kind of life he decided to quit the team and be a musician instead (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3bUaoWMgLlsjrM ).

I haven't heard this song in such a long time.... I was a Marine infantryman in a helicopter assault company. In 1993, We jammed to this as we got battle ready to fly from the Navy ship over Mogadishu, Somalia. It hyped us and the running joke was we were disposable hero's . Loading ammo, grenades, claymore mines and mortar rounds was never so enjoyable to this song. -Semper Fi

The live version is never an improvement on the experience. They spent months crafting a song in the studio to make an immersive experience, live is just them bashing it out night on night. Live is about a shared experience and that doesn't come across well on youtube and all you are left with is... bashing it out.

Reacting to live versions is really reacting to the performance, not to the song, you need to have heard it beforehand. Official videos are also distracting.
