I'm glad that you escaped the pipeline. And that's exactly what it is. If you grew up middle class or lower, the school system is designed to lead you to the service or to jail. You can't afford anything except, maybe, community college. You can't get a job except for, maybe,a city or county job and even then, preferential treatment is given to vets (as well it should be). Yeah, you can get a great education via the military. You can even get into one of the Academies which are Ivy League, but then you're dedicating the next several years to them. It's better than being shot cuz you caught a DWB ticket from a scared or racist cop.
