I love watching people trying to figure out what is so familiar about their music because I do the same and that's after 20+ years of working in nightclubs and as a roadie for assorted bands from all sorts of genres. I think that is one of Band-Maid's biggest draws. It's like they take all the things that are best about a genre and find a way to just weave them together in a way that you can't help just feeling like you know what you are hearing while still being original. I dunno if that even covers it. It is a really hard to explain the feeling... phenomenon... strange Maid magic...

Manners is like a classic old Stones song - think Brown Sugar - but it becomes more modern and unique as a Band-Maid song as it progresses. Yeah, I think of Cygnus X1 every time I hear Black Hole. There seems to be a huge overlap in the fanbases for Rush and Band Maid, and for good reason. Both groups are very highly skilled as individuals, are super tight as units, and are top notch composers. Oh, and are great live performers too.

Misa and Akane are a rhythm section that could easily compete with any I know. Each individually fantastic, but what they create together is insanely good from my non-musician point of view. However, I also think that Miku should not be forgotten and should be included by now. She is skilled enough by now to be able to support even difficult passages and at the same time give Kanami the freedom for her playing. Yes, she may not yet be able to play everything blindly in her sleep or by feel, but she is quite good to manage this task through hard training and practice. This line of the lyrics👇🏻says it all for me! 😎 _____________________ 「 _'Our rock never dies ever. Forever!'_ 」 --- from *BAND-MAID* 'Manners' 🕊

As a bass player, I was inspired by Miku to get better on guitar. And most of what she plays is pretty much within my reach (it's matching her speed and precision that's a challenge), but then I hit these sections where it's like Kanami was going "Ok, try THIS" when she wrote it.

From their interviews I get that they strive to become better with every song, every concert, every album. And they practice all the time. I know that Kanami writes an insane amount of songs (Kanami writes the music and Miku writes most of the lyrics) that never see the light of day and considering they have already over 100 recorded songs, it's incredible!

I love how you add value to the tracks with your perspective and knowledge but never to the point where you are looking down on what you have seen and heard. 2. I am super-impressed by both your linguistic and musical vocabularies. Your comparative analysis of the Maids’ musical offerings has given me somewhere else to go, where I can continue to explore other bands that may have acted as inspiration for them. Your range of adjectives and similes when describing what you have heard was a joy. I can really tell you have been assisting listeners to comprehend and appreciate what they are hearing for a good while. That is rare these days. 3. Your research is great: not too much so that the freshness of the reaction is spoiled, but enough to be respectful to the musicians. Great balance. All in all, a fantastic reaction. You just earned another follower! Thank you.

Great Reaction and Review! Band-Maid is one of those infectious bands that offer something familiar yet uniquely different and new. I believe It is rare thing to find a band that is proficient enough instrumentally to craft songs that form simplicity from complexity and visa versa all while reflecting a certain familiarity by incorporating the best elements of Rock/Metal/Punk/Funk/Blues & Pop which is catchy enough leaving you wanting more. I cannot ever recall a band that have written and performed music that has left such an effect where I have mimicked the vocals in a language that was foreign to my own. Now that's a rare feat and surprising! Nonetheless, I do believe I'm not the lone ranger in saying they posses something special. Some unmeasurable intangibles that is truly rare in this day in age. I feel fortunate to have a ticket to see them live later this year in San Diego. I hope your brother gets tickets and gets to experience this band live.

Eric, love your ears! I love me some Stone Roses, Replacements, and Mudhoney. But yes, “Black Hole” is especially Soundgarden. Try “Why Why Why”-it’s GNR with a Motown chorus and a Jane’s Addiction-y stony blues breakdown (but much better singing lol). It works. IMO the En Vogue comparison is spot-on. Worth noting that that song was itself inspired by "Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow" by Funkadelic back in 1970. BAND-MAID is always Fresh yet Familiar. Don't even try to figure out the influence of their songs. You'll blow a microchip. I've been trying to figure out the influence for the ending on 'Secret My Lips' for years. The only one I, and a few other people as well, have figured out was 'Thrill', and that's only because it's so obvious. It's 'Thriller'. But they didn't even write that one. It was their breakthrough hit on their very first music video and they weren't writing their own material yet. They are uncrackable. So unless I see the anime that has the song that reminds me of the ending of 'Secret My Lips', I'll never figure it out. BTW, it's Saiki's name is pronounce like (Sigh-Key), Psyche. not Say-Key. “Formulaic, that’s for pop music”. Maybe the best comment ever. Nice sucker punch bro. For those that didn’t stick around, he wasn’t talking about Band Maid when he said that.
and right on time for the one year anniversary of that particular okyu-ji :D

Eric, from all the comments before me, it looks like you hit the nail with your comments and reaction. Band-Maid is special to all of us Maidiacs for various reasons. Band-Maid couldn’t have arrived at a better time with everything going on in the world. They lighten the heart and a smile on many faces. Thanks again.

Akane has cited Bernard Purdie as an influence, and I think it shows in Manners.

People will give you names of many other insane drummers, but Akane is my favorite. Her drumming seems to me very melodic, colourful and playful while the timing is always perfect.

Jimmy Page, caught their act and wanted to meet Akane. She thought she was being pranked. They did meet. There is a picture of the two of them on the internet. Later, he said not in flattery, she was the reincarnation of John Bonham. High praise indeed!
@stevehall51282 жыл бұрын
There's no evidence he actually made the Bonham comparison, but asking for a pic with her is high praise enough.

Nice to see your follow-up was just as good as your first reaction. Really enjoying your insight. And speaking of 'familiar', that voice. Makes me long for the mid-to-late 90s 99x Radio DJs here in Atlanta.

Funny you say that! I actually did some voice work for both 99x and Fox 94 back in the day! I did a couple of bits and promos for them after a consultant got me some gigs doing V/O work. Cheers! Eric

@@TheWyldesidewithEricClark That's awesome. I miss Barnes, Leslie, and Jimmy in the mornings. :) A thing the kids will miss out on... morning drivetime.

@@mattdhorstman There is a push from independent station owners to go back to the "classic" programming where talent and music drive the station and not sales. If the product is top notch, the sales will come. For the past 40 years, the sole focus of most stations is sales with very little to any regard shown to programming. I sat in a chair and watched one of the Dickey Brothers of Cumulus say, "I don't care if there is only a Test Tone on our stations, you will sell advertising."...That was the beginning of the end for most radio. Consolidation and consultants ruined the radio we grew up with all for new cars and houses and cocaine and strippers. Sorry for the rant. Cheers! Eric

THE best live Rock band in existence. Think that's everything covered. The sound/tempo/rhythm you're hearing but can't place is the sound of the great Rock bands I went to see in the 70's, especially Led Zeppelin, but this is Rock for the 21st century.

Akane is not a drummer! Akane is a virtuoso percussionist who chooses to PLAY the drums. Extraordinary talent, I love her work. Cheers and thanks!
