It was always my understanding that The Show must go on was written by Brian with Freddie in mind. I feel like Brian wrote many songs with Freddie's passion in his thought process. The band did stop when Freddie died. Bassist John Deacon retired, (returned for a couple of songs and Freddie's tribute concert). They started performing again in 2004 with Paul Rodgers singing, that lasted till about 2009. They then found Adam Lambert on American idol and he joined the group in 2011

This is such a beautiful though sad song. This is a song written by Brian about his failed marriage and the affair that he was having at that time. He was a mess, the thought of not being with his children was crushing him. No matter what choice he made, he was going to lose. Brian sang this song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and it was gut wrenching, the song taking on a whole different meaning in that setting. I believe that was the first time that this song was done live. Brian wrote this song with two other people so the whole royalty issue was too messy for making it a Queen song so they put it away and didn't release it until much later, after Freddie's death. Queen had no intention of replacing Freddie, they all believed that Queen would die when Freddie died. Brian and Roger were already working on solo stuff before Freddie actually passed but Freddie kept coming into the studio asking for songs to sing so Brian and Roger kept giving him what they had written, having never really intended to have them be Queen songs.

Brian May: ""The Show Must Go On" came from Roger and John playing the sequence, and I started to put things down. At the beginning, it was just this chord sequence, but I had this strange feeling that it could be somehow important, and I got very impassioned and went and beavered away at it. I sat down with Freddie, and we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse." So Freddie and Brian wrote parts of it.

Freddie always sings with emotion and passion. That’s why many people’s first instinct is that Freddie “wrote” the song. Even the British Press would do that!

HEARTBREAKING SONG - OH FREDDIE WE MISS YOU!! 😭😭😭😭 Brian’s wrote this song and his version punches you in the gut! 💝 ❤️🧡💛💜💙💚 Both Brian & Roger suffered greatly with Freddie’s passing. John retired from Queen in 1997. Brian was in a deep depression with Freddie & his own father’s passing away about the same time. Solo projects kept them occupied. In fact, Brian just re-released his BACK TO THE LIGHT album. You should check out DRIVEN BY YOU, BACK TO THE LIGHT, & RESURRECTION. Just got a notification from iHeart radio that Roger is releasing a new single about the dark times during Covid shutdowns.

Too much love was written by Brian about his own marriage breakup. He felt awful about leaving his wife for another woman. Freddie was the singer in the band though, and he sang it and because of what happened to Freddie it took on another meaning. Brian has now recorded this song for his own album. As others have said The Show Must Go on was written for Freddie to sing, and with Freddie in mind I think. It was one of the last songs. May is credited but I suspect there were the usual queen wranglings and a lot of input from everyone.

After Freddie died, the guys were gutted. They all went through a very dark period, especially Brian, who considered suicide. At that point they said Queen was done.

Another masterpiece written by Brian May and performed beautifully by Freddie. Brian wrote it about what he (Brian) was going through in his life at that time as his marriage was breaking up. BEautiful song. You should also check out Brian’s performance of this song….also beautiful. Loved your reaction! Regarding what Queen did after Freddie passed, in interviews with Brian and Roger, they believed there was no Queen without Freddie. (John Deacon believed the same thing). The surviving band members performed together for Freddie’s Tribute concert in 1992, and performed Show Must Go On with Elton John. They also worked in the studio to release their final album with Freddie’s last recordings Made in Heaven in 1995. John Deacon retired from the music industry in 1997. Brian and Roger both did solo work and toured with their own bands. Brian was deeply depressed, losing both Freddie and his Dad, as well as his first marriage falling apart. Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2001. In 2004, Brian and Roger began touring again as Queen + Paul Rodgers.

This is written by Dr Brian May about his life and he from what I remember did the original version, people assume it's about Freddie and his final years, but they put the video together afterwards, have a look at Brian version,I've pinged you some information about the group and don't forget it's Freddie 75th birthday Sunday

Brian wrote this based I believe on his marriage that was ending with his first wife...there is a video where Brian sings this...John Deacon retired a few years after Freddie died..Roger and Brian do tour with Adam Lambert doing Queen music...Brian and Roger have toured with their own bands..both Brian and Roger work on their own solo music and albums...John Deacon felt Queen was no longer Queen without Freddie.

You are correct, Kathleen. In fact, Brian went into a deep depression and was almost suicidal. He went for Mental Rehab/help at a place in Arizona, USA.

Your reactions are so genuine. The video definitely seems to convey that the song was about Freddie - but it wasn't. As many have commented, Brian wrote it about his own experience falling in love with someone other than his wife - "too much love." He was "caught between the lover and the love [he] left behind." On the other hand, Show Must Go On was definitely written by Brian about and for Freddie. Other commenters have filled in the information you asked about Queen after Freddie's passing. I don't know whether Show Must Go On was Brian's way of communicating to Freddie that the band would continue to perform and record without him; I don't tend to think that was meant. Of course Freddie did record many vocals before he died and he expected (requested) his bandmates to use them to produce future songs after he died, adding in the instrumentation etc. But Show Must Go On strikes me as an empathetic friend putting into words Freddie's struggles through his illness and Freddie's attitude and strength.

I also agree. In fact Brian has said in an interview that he was writing words for Freddie to sing what he was feeling and going through, because it was never discussed in conversation. Freddie was brave and kept living his life and doing what he loved most as long as he could. 💔

Brian May did write The Show Must Go On for Freddie, but he was so ill and the song difficult to sing he didn't know if Freddie could sing it.....especially the high notes. But Freddie lacerated the vocals with the aid of a shot of vodka. This song was written by Brian May and I think connected to his own marriage break up when he met Angela Dobson. When Freddie died I think for quite a while they thought that was the end of Queen, so I don't think there was any plan. No offence at your questions....I'm glad your interested! 😊

Brian wrote this about his affair but Freddie must have felt this song with his own life so sang it. You can tell with the passion Freddie sang about his life and not Brians affair. Its full of passion either way.

One of Brian’s best songs. Brian also released it on his solo album & it’s amazing in a different way. Freddie nails it here and the video is really lovely. My understanding is that Freddie wanted to record it & it was an earlier vocal. The band, including John believed they were done. Innuendo was released just as Freddie died, then they worked on made in Heaven, soon after John retired. Roger & Brian didn’t perform as Queen for quite awhile.

show must go on,the composition was mainly by Brian but he used a chord sequenece Roger and john were doing their producer Richards suggested a key shift in the second verse also chord sequence pachelbels canon I don't know if this was suggested by Freddie,it doesn't say but he was more aware of that type of music Freddie wasn't well at this time and brian had done the main composition so even though Freddie was writting it withhim Brian did most of the work finishing it up and doing the demo Brian said he finished the mapping and brought the demo in when brian tried to sing it for the demo he realised it was quite hard and he could only manage it in falsetto imo he should have altered it slightly or made two versions and just explained it was difficult for him he said to Freddie this might be too difficult for you in chest voice but he took a vodka and nailed the difficult section it's classed as their most difficult song to sing it's a challenge for good singers in good health I watched an analys video and they explained why in his opinion it was more difficult than who wants to live forever which is difficult as it keeps climbimg up and need a lot of breath control SMGO is difficult as you are needing to pronounced words at high range in chest voice which is far more difficult than just reaching high notes or holding those notes

Such a beautiful yet heartbreaking song. In answer to your question of what plans did Queen have planned after Freedom's passing....... There is a documentary called "The Show Must Go On - The Queen & Adam Lambert Story" In this Roger Taylor (drummer) & Dr Brian May (guitarist) talk about that in great detail!

quite a bit of confusion over show must go on my impression of what Brian has said he was writting it with Freddie then finished it as freddie wasn't well itv doc 2014 Brian 'we (Freddie) hammered out the lyrics about a heart broken clown with his smile painted on,we knew what we were writting about but didn't discuss it,I (Brian) added wings of a butterfly later on.. wiki- we worked out the theme together Express- we spent the afternoon together and solidified the first verse -I had enough material to finish the last two verses -I added wings.. it makes sense if freddie suggested the theme as a sad clown he was very aware of vesti Guibba which he used at the begining of Hard Life vesti was about a sad clown with his smile painted on but had to still go on and perform this also represents very much Freddies attitude keeping his feelings to himself, trying to be positive ffor himself and those around him even if he's struggling there's lots of examples of this through his career but especially when he was ill

Brians song but like most Freddie would relate to parts of it 'torn between your lover and the love you leave behind' 75 Freddie had been in a relationship and lived with Mary and loved her very much,6 years? but had met David and realised it wouldn't be right to stay with mary.. but David said he felt freddie had a lot of guilt of mary for a long time, she said he was worried she wouldnt support him but she did they remained close friends to the end and he left her his home and royalties Brian (co wrote) too much love after loosing his wife due to cheating -torn between a lover .. Freddie wrote love kills as a track for a film in 84 as in can brake your heart... when Brian wrote this was 87 or 88 before they started recording they didnt use it at that time but did record it Freddie had been with jim for 4 years when they did the album TMLWKY- victim of my crime I know people are probably not thinking of that but it's because of that line I don't like people thinking it's Freddies song but a lot of religious people see being gay as a crime... people even thought AIDS was punishment from God..
