Blue is the rival in red and blue. Red is your character. Silver is the rival in gold and silver. For some reason they started out with naming the rivals (and your character) after the games.

@@Mattables Yeah, after that both the main characters and rivals started getting more normal names lol. In the Pokemon Adventures Manga though, the main characters are still always named after the games I believe up to the current generation still.

The rock section has come in twice before iirc, first for Shofu’s ash verse on the trainer cypher and then for Rustage’s Mewtwo on the villains cypher. Notably all three of these are primarily about the anime.

2:10 Gary is the anime incarnation of Blue they are similar but different at the same time as Blue went on to be the Viridian Gym leader while Gary went on to be a Professor.

It wasn't until Gen 3 where they gave the rivals names and as a result the canonical names (even when they do show up in the anime) are; Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, Leaf, and Crystal and then Wally was the first named rival who appeared and was in Gen 3 with Barry in Gen 4 and Cheren and Bianca both in Gen 5 which was the first one to have two rivals

You should watch the pokemon origins anime. It's a 6 episode short series following the original Red/blue game. Edit: It's 4 episodes sorry I forgot hahaha there are other pokemon short series (there was a series where it's just like 5- 10 mins) that focus on stories in the games.
