Came back to this reaction to leave a comment: What a catchy tune this is! I had this stuck in my head the last couple of days... thanks for reacting to this ❤🤘. I would have missed this song otherwise...

Good old boys from North Vancouver British Columbia, local legends. RIP John, a true legend. Also the instrument is a Celtic Flute.

My favorite Canadian song. Was introduced to it in college in Canada...such fond, yet foggy, memories!😂

Very nice! I was always the Designated Driver in college, so I never really imbibed. My nickname in college was The Voice of Reason, which goes a long way to show how much fun I was, but how trusted I was at the same time.

If you went to university in Canada in the 1990s, you’ve danced many, many a time late and drunk to this song, and then every person you know closed their wedding party down with it

This is an original they wrote while on tour in England and the base tune is a riff on a Scottish reel 'Sleepy Maggie". But it has been covered by a few Irish bands over the years.

Canada's music scene saw a huge Celtic Revival period in the 90s, drawing on the strong Irish background of the Maritime provinces, primarily Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Spirit of the West was one of many artists to come out of that period. See also: Rita MacNeil The Rankin Family Great Big Sea Ashley MacIsaac Loreena McKennitt The Barra-MacNeils Men of the Deep The Chieftains The Irish Descendents and mant more.

I've heard of more than my fair USA-ian share of those, including Rita MacNeil, Men of the Deep, The Chieftains, and of COURSE, Great Big Sea. Anyone worth their looneys would know GBS. 😉

If you like this, try another Canadian Celtic-punk band "The Mahones". Their song "Drunken Lazy Bastard" is a banger. Finny, the lead singer, was born in Ireland but moved to Canada when he was young. His voice is very Shane McGowan-ish. He was once in a band with Gord Downy of Tragically Hip fame.
