I could put some head canon on Picard not reacting. He saw that Uta was forcing Riker's hand, so was prepared for what Riker would do. Picard's lack of reaction gives support for his XO's actions. Had Picard reacted with horror, then that would have let Riker be thrown under the bus.

That Barzan wormhole is very much not the same as the one discovered in Deep Space Nine. They are in entirely different areas in space and the Bajoran wormhole is not discovered until many years later. The first two seasons of Deep Space Nine aired the same years as seasons six and seven of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Not only are there a few direct crossovers between the two (one show's characters appearing on the other show), but there is also a storyline which each show builds on following episodes of the other. Also, Worf joins DS9 starting in season four, and many of his storylines which start in TNG reach a very satisfying conclusion later in DS9. DS9 also follows-up on TNG episodes you haven't seen yet, like "Qpid" and "Second Chances". I liked DS9 when it first came out. Some critics called it "Deep Space 90210", because it spent more time showing life on the station and developing characters, not always in the midst of a major conflict. Yes, there were some specific episodes I disliked for that reason too, but overall it was still a good show. A few years ago, I re-watched the series on Netflix, and it was far better than I remembered. Much of the show deals with geo-politics, occupations, and resistance movements / insurgencies. I think I understood these storylines better the second time, after following some rather unfortunate events in real-life news. I think many of us would like to see you react to DS9 as well, when you reach season six of TNG. You can look at the original air dates to sequence the episodes correctly between the two. But if you don't want to watch all of it, I would be willing to look through the first two seasons of DS9 again, and make a list of just episodes of interest for TNG fans (including episodes which these episodes build from, so you won't feel like you missed something). Reply to this comment if interested, and I will start working on the list. It will take some time to generate, but I can add it as a comment to one of your future TNG reaction videos.
@DeltaAssaultGaming2 жыл бұрын
I never liked DS9. It seemed like a very unpleasant environment compared to TNG. Mike Stoklasa said that Star Trek to him was about being in a big happy family aboard a starship exploring the universe. And that’s what I think is missing from DS9.
@Retro65023 жыл бұрын
The wormhole in DS9 is different. That one is near Bajor. The episode in TNG that you recently watched is about the Barzan wormhole - different planet :-) The Bajorans aren't introduced in TNG until Season 5 with Ro Laren.

I don't know if you've recorded the reaction to "The Best of Both Worlds, part 1" yet, but one trivia item you could include in it's intro is that TV Guide twice made lists of the top 100 episodes in all of episodic television, and this episode made both lists. It was number 70 in their 1997 list, which also included a lot of favorites from as far back as the 1950's and 1960's. Their 2009 list apparently had a more recent cutoff, and as a result "The Best of Both Worlds" moved up to number 40. The original series episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" also made both lists, though it was farther down in the ranking both times. No other Star Trek episode made either list.

@@ZipplyZane It's relative...Back in the early 70's, in the wasteland of children's Saturday morning television, it did win acclaim as having been intelligently written. The environment for children's television at the time had been greatly changed by Peggy Charren and the Action for Children's Television(ACT) group. Restrictions were placed on children's TV, limiting the type of conflict that could be depicted. This in turn led to both a decline in formal narratives and any type of physical confrontation or action in children's animation. In other words, it was easier for the networks to play it safe and present "sketch-comedy" cartoons that were relatively toothless. Action series from the 60's such as Jonny Quest, Hot Wheels, and Fantastic Voyage wouldn't have been approved in the 70's. The writers for Star Trek had to depict conflict without much in the way of interpersonal fighting or death. It's a testament to the writers that the animated series was so distinctive in its writing and overall direction in spite of this. And a lot of the design work was impressive and balanced out the limited animation. If there was disappointment from Trek fans, it was that it WAS a Saturday Morning cartoon, and not a proper live-action revival...

@@Esl1999 I'm not really going to knock Paula *too* much, I think she does a fairly decent job on presenting a lot of trivia. If I was irked by the Peabody omission, it primarily because, even though TNG had a rocky start, that award did a LOT to alert people that the show could be ambitious and provocative. It was pretty prestigious recognition, and did a lot to help see it through that first rough year. ESL1999, do you watch the full episode reactions on Patreon? I'm certainly curious about them!

Well just open the door. It's not a radio show. So we were able to make that quite visual and the art department came up with this bizarre painted backdrop. To me this particular episode reminds me of both the second Trek feature film and a TOS episode called City On The Edge of Forever (I'm sure Paula will understand why). On a lighter note, in 48 hours the latest episode of Discovery will be Star Trek's 800th episode. That spans TOS(1966-1969), TAS(1973-1974), TNG(1987-1994), DS9(1993-1999), VOY(1995-2001), ENT(2001-2005), DSC(2016-Present), Short Treks(2017-Present), Picard(2019-Present), and Lower Decks(2020- Present). In production is Prodigy(a Nickelodeon series), Strange New Worlds(Discovery spin off 1), and Section 31(Discovery spin off 2). As well as a 14th film which may or may not be the final Kelvin timeline film. I will say for a fan such as myself(and Paula) don't listen to the haters of the new Trek era(anything post 2009). Watch it for yourself and form your own opinions. Personally I loved it(Trek fan since this series at 3 years old)
