Strange to imagine how this episode would have looked without Nichelle Nichols as Uhura; she was intending to quit at the end of the first season but, at a party, she was persuaded to meet a huge Star Trek fan; none other than Martin Luther King jr. When she explained that she was leaving, and why, he was distraught and almost begged her to stay. He told her what she represented, and how much that meant for black people in America. I recall her relating the story to another fan at one of the old fan-run Trek cons; think it was in Leicester. I'd just had something signed and was hanging around listening her talking and, when she talked about it she had tears in her eyes. I don't think it could have been too long before he was assassinated. I think people don't appreciate what a groundbreaking character Uhura was. She was black; African, an officer ~ more, an officer in a command position, and played by an actor who used her position to further a lot of progressive cause, kerk

Kudos to Paula for knowing so much about the Cold War and its relationship to the show. The Klingons and Romulans were metaphors for both the Soviet Union and PRC. Yeah, I lived thru all that. Mutually Assured Destruction was not a trivial thing. Desilu was cheap, that sparse makeup was the best they could manage on the show. The first movie had budget, and overhauled the Klingons for the short bit of screen time they had. That set up the rest of the movies and TNG with the new look. Season 4 of Enterprise finally gave us the in-universe backstory, and I found it VERY satisfying. The DS9 episode about this event is bonkers. For more context on the history of the Klingons and Federation, and the Cold War, see TOS "Errand of Mercy" and "The Omega Glory" and then Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country. All are absolutely epic. For more Vulcans, TOS "Amok Time" and probably my all-time favorite, "Journey to Babel". Really heavy stuff in these. Chekov was not in the first season. The Russians complained that they had been first in space and were being ignored, so Roddenberry gave them representation with a young heartthrob to compete with Davy Jones of The Monkees. It worked well. The project manager, William Schallert, was all over TV and I believe movies too in the 60's. Most notably he played the protagonist's father on the Patty Duke show (a fun wholesome sitcom). He was in other stuff, no telling where you saw him. Loved watching you react to this.

John Colicos once talked about playing the first Klingon ever on Star Trek. He mentioned back then no one had a solid idea of what Klingons would look like or act like. So he said he thought it would be cool to be a Genghis Khan in space. And that idea took hold. And you can see that in how they looked and how he played as a Klingon.

This was David Gerrold's first script - there's a book about the back story. The original versions was entitled A Fuzzy Thing Happened w-the creatures called Fuzzies - but they needed to be changed to something else because of the scifi novel Little Fuzzy. The original Klingon make up was beard and heavy eyebrows with swarthy skin. By the time they got to this episode the make up artist forgot about the swarthy skin - and so the variations in Klingon skin color was created. The new look "turtle head" was created for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It wasn't until I saw him out of make up that I discovered Michael Dorn was African American. I was hoping you had included Journey to Babel so Katrina could see that Sarek was the same actor all thru the movies (with the original crew and TNG).

First, thank you for doing these TOS episodes. I watched them when they originally aired, and loved them. Nobody else in my family liked the show, which is still true today. lol I laughed when Paula said the Cold War was "kind of a thing." Yeah it was. I know younger people can't understand what it was like since they didn't experience it, but for me it was just a constant underlying terror in my life. Because the news media, and my schools constantly reinforced the idea that the Soviets were going to nuke us at any time. To this day I still have vivid nightmares (about 4 or 5 times a year) of atomic bombs going off. But on a lighter note, when I was in elementary school one of the best jokes going around was: Question: "How is Star Trek like toilet paper?" Answer: "They both go to Uranus and wipe out the Klingons" 😂

This is very very minor in this episode as most of it takes place on the station, but one thing that those of us who grew up with the original series is noticeable that those who are only familiar with TNG don't get to experience is the Enterprise herself. In TNG, the Enterprise is merely the set and a way to get from story to story. In the original series the Enterprise is a main character of the show. Many episodes have scenes where they talk about the ship and how much it means to them, equating the Enterprise to a beautiful woman. Kirk as a Captain must sacrifice members of the crew from time to time, but he will do anything to save the ship. The ship had it's own personality and evoked a reaction. Keep in mind there were thirteen Constitution class ships in the Federation fleet. They were plenty of spaceships in the federation fleet, but the Enterprise and her sister ships were the only Starships. There's another episode where an alien is underestimating Kirk, commenting he's just a spaceship captain, and another Federation captain corrects him... "He commands not just a spaceship, but a Starship. A very special ship and crew...." Starships were the elite of the elite. It was a comedic scene, but in the bar fight in this episode, when Scotty throws the punch, he's defending the honor of the leading lady of the show, and as Engineer in a very real sense the woman he loves... and we were cheering him on.

The rest of seasons 2 and 3 are all re-use of model photography past this point. It's the shot from behind the ship approaching K7. As is standard practice for the time, the model was only finished on one side and shots were just mirrorerd, but the angle of seeing both sides reveals the flaw (all fixed in 2006). The Smithsonian has a great video on the model on their channel.

I think part of the reason Vulcans appeared so much less directly in TNG was because of Spock's prominence throughout nearly every episode of TOS. Even to non-Trekkies, like my mom who never watches scifi, everyone knows who Spock is and both he and Vulcans became the cultural mainstay for "aliens". By TNG, they really wanted to move beyond a lot of that as well as depict that many old rivalries either get resolved or evolve.

Klingons = Soviet Union. Romulans = Communist China. The old FASA Star Trek game had a backstory for why the Klingons are so humanoid. When you guys were talking about props, I'm surprised you didn't mention how the tribbles became a hot item for collectors after this episode. I don't have any numbers on it, but I would guess that they were, and possibly still are, the #1 selling item that Star Trek has.

The change in Klingon Appearance is dealt with in a few episodes of Star Trek Enterprise, a prequel series to Star Trek that takes place before the formation of the Federation of Planets. NX-01 Enterprise is captained by Jonathan Archer, and he has an observer to their first contact guide, a Vulcan officer names T'Pol.

The actor playing Baris is William Schallert, who played the father on The Patty Duke Show in the early '60s and was well known for that role going into Star Trek. The Baris role was actually a bit of a departure from the type of characters he usually played.

Also in this episode the Klingon refers to the Organian Peace Treaty. I think that little bit of rare continuity is what also made this episode stick out to fans.

Klingons were supposed to be a stand in for the Soviet Union during the cold war,, that part was correct. Stylistically, there were based off of John Wayne's portrayal of Genghis Khan. So they were ment to look Mongolian specifically, not the Russians. The look was changed in The Motion Picture. DS9 asked about the change with no answer. Enterprise then came through with an answer much much later. Plus they were re-connect into a more Viking like society compared to what they were in TOS.

"Trouble with Tribbles" was Shatner's favorite episode to film. I like it because Kirk finally has the balls to stand up to a "bigger-than-his-britches." idiot, and Scottie's my favorite drunk. Long story short, FUN😁🤣

The bad guys in Die Hard were if fact meant to be German rather than Russian. The explanation for the changed look of the Klingons doesn't happen until 'Star Trek: Enterprise'... But it does do a passable job at sorting out those problems.

Mark 5:02. A "Karate Gi", as opposed to a, "Taekwondo Dobok". It is also inspired by, "Flash Gordon" & "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century", of the 1930s! By the way, the shirts that people think of as, "Mustard Yellow", or "Command Gold", only appeared that way on, or in, camera, because the material looked different when exposed to the stage lights, or something like that. A big clue, is that this shirt and the dress uniform shirt, both still look Green! 🖖🤓😎🧐

Mark 8:07. "Sagging"! That may be an acknowledgement of how difficult it is to keep the model kit model's Warp Nacelles, from breaking off, because the support pylons are too weak to support the weight of them! After experiments with ways to keep them up, I gave up, and satisfy myself with just owning sealed kits. (Unless they've destroyed without my knowledge, by my pets? 🤔 Or elders?!)

Another great reaction! Originally, The Klingons appearance was supposed to be loosely based on the appearance of Gengis Khan and was designed to be quick & cost-effective. By the time the movies & Next Gen came around, they had the time & money to update the makeup. I look forward to your future reactions! PS: To further explain the similarities & connections between Vulcans & Romulans, I highly recommend the TOS episode, Balance of Terror. -Enjoy! ❤

Also, I think the "bad Guys" in Die Hard (1) were mostly German (& European). Maybe Eastern European? Bit about the Klingons, in case no one's mentioned it. They were named for one of Gene Roddenberry's friends, whose last name was, Cingan. And, when they were first introduced, in the episode, 'Errand of Mercy', they were described as being the, 'Mongolians of space'. And, John Colicos, who played the lead Klingon in that episode, said to the makeup artist, 'well, if I'm supposed to be Mongolian, then fix me up to look like Genghis Khan.' And, that's the way the rest of the Klingons looked in the original series.
