I have always thought that this music video represents the Folklore album as a whole; Taylor's experience, writing the album and the various ways in which it served her during the pandemic. It starts within the house, then the mystical mossy wood, then the ocean storm, and finally back to the house. All of this symbolizes how she clung to music and writing (ie the piano) through it all. The video shows her finding peace in her home, in her imagination, and in the eye of the storm.

I’m not familiar enough with his sound to verify that, but the entire album and bonus tracks she’s released so far are widely being praised (except by a couple dudes who really don’t like her and are getting ratioed in their own comments section because of it), so it might be worth a listen!

Betty = James perspective (James asking Betty to forgive him for cheating on her with Augustine, as James loves Betty.) Song/August = Augustine (she loved James, and thought they had a future, but he was never hers.) Song/Cardigan = Betty, years later about how James made her feel, like his favorite cardigan. Taylor has said she felt Betty forgave James, and they could be together, or he's just a memory for her.) There are other songs on Folklore that have bits and pieces of this story in them.) I hope I got that right. I put the songs in the order I prefer to listen to them.

Cardigan, August and Betty are all linked and part of a fictional love triangle (though since her split with her long term relationship Joe Alwyn, some fans think it was at least partially based on reality). Cardigan is from Betty's perspective when she's much older and reflecting on the relationship, August is from Augustine/Augusta's perspective and Betty is from James's perspective. James and Betty were together and then James, while still with Betty, had a summer fling with Augustine/Augusta (she is never named in any of the songs but in the long pond Taylor said she felt her name was either of those). Taylor also said she felt that James and Betty ended up together but he acted foolish and had a lot of begging and apologising to do. The video was inspired by the period and fantasy films that Taylor watched during COVID lockdown. Her look is similar to that of a classic "English rose", which is associated with English culture, that may be applied to a naturally beautiful woman or girl who is from or is associated with England. To me, the piano represents the impact music has had on her life and how no matter what she goes through, music is always there for her. The cardigan itself symbolises comfort and familiarity, evoking memories of a past relationship. It represents the warmth and security that love can provide, but also the potential for loss when that love fades. The video depicts her in various stages of a relationship, illustrating the passage of time and the evolution of feelings. According to a video posted to her Vevo account, the forest scene represents the evergreen beginning of a relationship where everything seems magical and full of beauty, while the ocean scene represents the isolation and fear involved while a relationship is breaking down and the ending scene in the cabin signifies returning to a sense of self after experiencing loss/heartbreak and a journey of self-discovery. Taylor's soaking-wet nightgown signifies how the relationship has changes the person. It could also be interpreted as Taylor's whole journey in the music industry. And some bts trivia is that the opening scene in the cabin shows a photo of Taylor's grandfather, Dean, who fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II and a painting that she created during the first week of COVID lockdown.

Remember that this is the first song of the fictional love triangle on Folklore. It is from the original girlfriends’ perspective when she’s looking back at her high school years with James. James had a summer fling with Betty. They must’ve had rocky roads (the water) during their time together. Taylor says that people want ti think of the other girl as a bad girl but she just wanted to be with James and was a good girl. I thought that was a strange comment to make for a fictional storyline of three people. But, it’s based on her characters and I guess she decided the characteristics of each person. LOL. I’m very sorry to hear that you had a not nice person on here. That’s so sad because we’ve come to really love, appreciate and respect ALL THREE of you! It wouldn’t be the same without each of your contributions. Hopefully you’ve received an apology from the person.
