John Paul’s contributions to Zeppelin were nothing short of legendary. His work on Hammond B-3 organ is pure magic for the listener. He was SO good that never even needed to be in a band. Let’s be thankful he joined up w Zeppelin.

They did not release singles or intend to. Eventually they released a few of their album songs as singles, under pressure from their record company, but they never wrote songs as singles, which would have had to be no more than 3 minutes long, and they did not want to be a band that was only thought to be as good as their last single and be under pressure to churn them out. They wanted the freedom to make music the way they wanted. People would buy Led Zeppelin albums.

The band's guitarist Jimmy Page insisted back then that if you wanted to hear a certain track... buy the entire album. As it should be. Page was the band's executive producer and had the final say on everything. It was also his idea for Zeppelin IV to have no writing or band name anywhere on the front or back of the album. Atlantic Records thought he was out of his mind for insisting that. They were wrong. That album alone has sold over 35 Million units worldwide. Page obviously proved them wrong and had the last laugh..

I started listening to Led Zeppelin in 1996. I was 10 and they became my favorite band. I have bought all 8 albums two times and I also owned the two dvds, The Song Remains the Same from 1976 and Led Zeppelin from 2003. I even bought No Quarter movie from 2004.

At the time, you could really only hear Led Zeppelin on the "album rock" radio stations. I was lucky enough to have an AM/FM radio in my 68 Cougar and heard it all! Oh, and an 8 track so I could play the whole album in the car!

Zep didn't do any singles in the UK, however, they did do a couple for US airplay, most likely due to Atlantic's insistence but it was RARE and Jimmy hated it most of all. From his Yardbird days, Jimmy saw how the desperation of having a hit single could totally demoralize a band because you were only as good as your next hit single and no one cared about the album. When Jimmy created Zep, he stipulated they would not release singles. In fact, he stated in an interview that part of the reason their songs were often longer than 3 to 3 1/2 minutes was so that they couldn't easily get chopped up for AM radio airplay. FM radio was considered "underground" at the time and was more willing to take a chance on playing long songs, album sides, sometimes even whole albums. Jimmy, again starting with the Yardbirds, having recognized FM was going to be the place to be, helped structure and cultivate Zep's albums accordingly. This is the song for Robert's wife as previously mentioned. This was the first song he wrote the majority of the lyrics for except for the "little drops of rain" section which were written by Jimmy and Jimmy harmonizes along with Robert.

This song is not about someone he 'should have quit long ago'. It's dedicated to his wife. She financially supported his career when he wasn't famous and wasn't earning anything significant. However they did split up in 1983 after the pressures of them losing a child and his being away touring a lot.

I respectfully disagree, Led Zeppelin never played Livin Lovin Maid after Heartbreaker live. The first time I saw Led Zeppelin was March 27, 1970 ( first of 18 times) and ever since then I couldn’t stand when radio stations played the 2 together, if they did it live, I probably wouldn’t feel that way.

@@GetSidewaysReacts no that was part of their breaking the rules. The promoter did it once, they didn't know or ok the record. Peter Grant has a video about it. Yep was so big when they hit the scene they wrote their own rules and Hear was just the man to enforce them. Juggernaut of a manager.
