Naming before knowing is the very definition of objectification. (Martin Buber explores this in 'I and Thou' for those with the appetite for some linguistic philosophy.) Because humans do not exist in isolation away from accountability, our "knowing" of truths has to exist in the context of shared memory. Like if I made a new friend in the community who was commonly known to be allergic to flowers, but I came into the relationship saying "well I like flowers and they haven't told ME they don't like flowers" and proceeded to bring them flowers every time I shared space with them, I'd be an asshole. That's not a relationship. It's self-serving and unethical. Right relationship probably looks more like starting with the shared ancestral knowledge of these Otherworld beings before we give authority to our own UPG.

exhausting, innit? NOT THE SAME but related, just had to go through a whole convo about the actual history of monotheism, how and when it arose, etc., with some fella who was dropping incorrect info on a FB post... and after me painfully laying it out (i have a BA in comparative myth & religion, which doesn't make me god but does indicate i've done a bit of proper research) his final response was effectively "well this is what i want to believe, so that's it." i think ppl can't separate that their spiritual beliefs are personal, but that the history of spirit-related topics such as myth and folklore are ontological realities.

Good job for calling that person out. I'm getting sick of people doing stuff like this. I mean it's like they're taking what they want from different cultures that suits them best and reforming it into their own new age thing. Which is not right and disrespectful.

So I'd like to know all about this thing from lore, only could you please just take out the lore part and whatever is left is what I'll take, but if it isn't connected to the lore then it's not appropriation, right? Right?????? (/sarcasm) Fuck's sake, people. WORDS HAVE MEANINGS and you don't get to just decide they don't mean something because you don't want them to mean that. I'm left with the commercial - "That's not how this works. That's not how ANY of this works." Good video at least, GRMA Lora!

It feels like someone saying, "That animal there in the field - it's a cat. Sure, it's almost 2 metres at the shoulders and moos - with text books and scholars saying it's a cow, but - it feels cat-ish to me, so I'm going to believe it's a cat." I mean, the folklore IS the field guide. If it excludes them or doesn't correlate, then how is it the same? To me, even using the term 'Sidhe' is appropriation anyway. 😒

Ugh it's pure entitlement and it has me irritated. It reminds me of the Christians I was raised among (and raised to be!) who didn't like the baggage associated with being Christian so they started calling themselves "Messianic Jews." How could someone even begin to claim the name "Jew" without studying deeply the millennia of written and living tradition packed into it?? Words have meanings AND not everything is for you!!

He might be better served to become more familiar with the IPS, your literary works and specifically Morgan Daimler's work as well, especially if his experiences are genuine. No one is entitled to extrapolate bits and pieces of another culture, or any faith either, without at least expecting some negative feedback. "Minus the folklore" indeed. Smh.

Huh. But the names are made by the folklore, by the relationships cultivated and engaged through the folklore. Taking on the names is one of the ways to engage with that folklore, irrevocably enough to gain power by it, as pointed out by the folklore. See also, Medb's sons all being renamed Manè on the prophecy that one of them so-named would kill Conchobar, and that time the boy took on the name of the hound of Chulain. It's all kind of just how names seem to work.

Could there be fae-type beings from other planets that perhaps he is in touch with? I have recently seen an influx in people talking about fae from other star systems such as the Pleiades. It’s fascinating to think about.

It is a shame that happened. I think the original person would be able to better understand and respect the Fae he shares a bond with if he read up on the folklore as you advised. That way he would be able to know they are not the Sidhe he thinks they are, and also cultivate better relationships with his Fae for who they truly are instead of who he believes they are. I went through a time where one being I connected with was pretending to be one from ancient folklore, and once I was able to do my research I finally saw through their lies. So research and knowledge of context is essential to connecting and understanding beings from Pagan history, folklore and mythology.

I so get irritated by the New Age "channelled" material. It just a red flag for me. Minus the folklore - my mind boggles at this or more so that someone else gets sucked in by it. Sadly its a real reflection of some of the rubbish being sprouted in many chat groups.

It's very insulting to native Irish folks who've been working with (or even just studying them for scholarly purposes and etc) by saying it's The Sidhe without the lore- where do they come from then? Not to mention it's also VERY insulting for the Good Folk. That's my take on it, call me out if I've said anything offensive or wrong. But I wonder how he could go about it without questioning himself. I'm sorry that you have to call people out, that's unnecessary labor for you.

Not every enlightened being is of truth and will make a fool out of you for fun, praying for discernment of spirit is important (or whatever way you meditate on your spiritual experiences)

Folklore, like all preserved ancient information, loses some of its integrity over time and passed on translations. Who can say if someone has met with members of the race that is called by the name Sidhe or Fae. Would these people, in present times, necessarily feel a need to define themselves based on what humans have recorded about them in the distant past? These same people may have had many different names across a multitude of human cultures.

I say this because my own personal encounters with tall, luminous beings, connected to Languedoc and Lithuania led me to a fervent fascination with, and deep respect for, Celtic history, Irish spirituality, and the Vulgate Cycle, while I attempted to answer questions I have about my own subjective experiences and deep desire to know. I'm not a 'new ager' or 'starseed' btw, and share similar sentiments as those expressed here. Unfortunately, in Lithuania, most of its ancient Pagan beliefs and practices were eradicated by the Catholic church. The Romuva movement is trying to repair this, but with little left in recorded or oral history to go by.. 🕊
