I keep hearing from the westerners here they are only souvenirs, THEY ARE NOT!!! They are still used very much in the farmers communities in the Netherlands. For all city folks here....... 1 they actually protect your whole feet. 2 they are cleaned in seconds 3 they last many decades So still the best working shoe ever made!

Clogs are very handy when you're around horses, if a horse steps on your fouut, wearing a clog you don't feel a thing. But when you're wearing sneakers you might ens up with a broken foot.

Clogs are still very much in use by farmers and such. Fun fact: french poor folk used to wear wooden shoes called sabots. Then, during the industrial revolution they started throwing them into the machinery of the factories during riots and protests. Thus the word sabotage was born

Clogs are a precursor to steel toed boots, in other words they are safety footwear. Because a cow's hoof stepping on your toes while you're trying to milk it is not fun. And them increasing the surface of your footprint helps with not sinking into the mud quite so deeply. Last but not least, most farmers knew how to make them from wood they had growing on their own land.

I live in the Netherlands, working a 32h/week healthcare job on a single modal income (I'm just a pharmacy tech) yet I live comfortably alone, in my apartment, that I own, just me, bills are payed. I have healthcare insurance . I have savings in the bank and I have plenty free time. I'm pretty content 🙂

3:01 yes, I went to kindergarten and the first years of primary school on clogs. That was 1980-1983. Later when I got job as printingpress operator, I had collegues wearing clogs instead of safetyshoes, that was 2016

Health insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands. You pay premium of 145 a month or so, just basic insurance and pay a yearly own risk of 385 if you make medical costs, gp excluded

Netherlands was a great place! Dutch culture was one to be proud of. Unfortunately nowadays we lost a lot of it and lost being ourselves and what made us great. I’m not as happy anymore as I was in the 90’s. We are fighting the clock (like Americans do) instead of enjoying every moment like the south of Europe does!

We are slowly trying to get rid of the flower farming industry, due to the massive amounts of pesticides used on the flowers that cause a still increasing epidemic of Parkinson's disease here in the Netherlands.

1:30 i think its less about happiness and more about not feeling miserable. We just have very little life changing things to worry about. Cough cough health care 😇 😂 we can walk or bike to get our groceries. Fresh bread is a guarantee in almost every village. EU restricts a lot of unhealthy food. To sport you dont HAVE to go to the gym. Little things like that add up. 3:00 yes, my grandparents still have clogs to work in the garden when the situation calls for it. Mostly i use theirs to make a quick run to the outside bin. They are very easy to slip into and surprisingly comfortable. There is this blind guy 3 villages away. He often takes public transit. He always wears clogs. They much be pretty handy when you cant see where you walk and constantly bump into things. Until warmer winter now roam our lands it was common to see people from all ages on the ice. In small forest lakes, open air ice skate lands (thats are flooded specifically during the winter to allow ice skating). Most towns of 50.000 people or larger have an indoors ice skate hall. 5:11 first, its the Netherlands, not holland. Holland is the area with the most tourists. Second, we export about 80% of the Worlds tulips. 5:35 i feel like part of this is to thank our drive for efficiency. When you are efficient you need less time to get the same amount of work done. On average we might make less, but our minimum wage is higher i think and there are a LOT more SUPER wealthy people in America than the Netherlands so the common folk might be making more on average. So for health care, we pay a monthly bill. We can sort of pick and choose what we want from our healthcare. Due to this monthly payment we sort if pay healthcare for each other. Idk, i just pay my bill and i can go to the doctor whenever i need to hahaha.

The Dutch used ice skating in old times when winters were still winters as means of transportation for hundreds of years and it is documented that we were ice skating in the 13th century already

When I was a kid (in the 90's) I lived in an agricultural area. When I got out of school, I had to take off my shoes and put on my clogs. Otherwise my mom would have to wash my shoes every day. Also, being a kid in the Netherlands is great. My 4 and 6 year old get to go to a nearby playground by themselves and they can always hop on their bike to go to their friends houses, to check if they want to play too. This also makes life easier for the parents, because while they're gone I can do chores undisturbed or just kick back with a book. If I did this in the US, I'd probably be arrested.

As far as wearing clogs is concerned, if you have a ban where you spend a lot of time outside, even in winter (with snow and frost and a wet workplace), clogs are a solution in combination with woolen socks, nice and warm and waterproof.

Speed skating is because we skated on ice and when that was not possible anymore we had Thialf in Heerenveen, a speed skating Stadion . This was the place where a lot of Dutch speed skaters trained and got better. It is Frisian so the best speed skating people are usually from Fryslân. The best province in The Netherlands and where they speak 3 languages. Frisian, Dutch and English from an early age, because a lot here start with the first two languages. Forget Amsterdam, forget the big cities, visit Fryslân and you will be amazed. Can you tell I love the place where I was born? 🙃😉😃😁🥰❤️

I was born in Noord-Brabant and spent about 6 months staying in a vacation home in Friesland for work. I fell in love with the place as well. The only thing I found uncanny was that the landscape was so flat. There were hills where I grew up and I never realized how much you subconsciously expect the kind of landscape you're used to to be everywhere. It gives low level unease when it's not there. But I guess 6 months wasn't enough to get used to the difference.

You don't just need the cold, you also need water for ice and the Netherlands has lots of it. The Dutch have been ice skating for fun since the "small ice age" in the late Middle Ages and Early Modern Era, it was brought over with the Glorious Invasion of 1688 to England. There were even skating regiments during the 80-years war suprising the Spanish military who had no chance of catching them. In a cold winter we can also do skating tours because of all the connected canals, streams and lakes. That brings another dimension than just going around in circles on a frozen lake.

It hasn't properly frozen in years. We hardly ever get ice in the Netherlands. I don't know where you live but skating on ice in the Netherlands is quite rare. We have a skating rink in my area. I'm glad for it because it's the only way to skate on ice, most of the time

a unique feature in the Netherlands the Birthday!! calendar, not your activities it is only for birthdays and you see every day so you don't forget anyone, second benefit is people who visit can write theirs in if it is not on there yet. you don't even have to change it every year because the week days are not on it, just 1 to 29-31

10) There is a paradox in happiness to be honest. We are quite happy, but still we have the most depressed people in the world as well. I find our country ok, but a bit narrowminded. 9) Cycling is also quite cheap compared to a car. The only downside popping up now are electric bikes and the fashional 'fat bike'. They make people lazy by motorized bikes and we see an increase in accidents now. There is a debate going to regulate the last some more. 8) Clogs are still used by farmers and people who just like them for a fashion statement. 7) Child allowance fee is just too small to make a difference. It's just 350 euros per quarter, so it doesn't help that much. Also it's counted as income, so it will be taxed at the end. 6) Skating is in the DNA of the country. There are even famous paintings from the 16th and 17th century that people are skating on ice. It goes back very long. Sadly, climate change is making natural ice an issue. It's not cold enough anymore for good ice outside. 4) Health care is ok, but strained in recent years. My experience: we have all sorts of health care, but the quality is dropping last decade. Staffing issues and underpayment are big issues at the moment. In costs we have a mandatory basic health insurance we have to pay. It's starting to get an issue and quite expensive, because of the same understaffing, an aging population, inflation and the privatization of the insurance companies. 3) Yes, it is quite Dutch to put birthday calendars on the toilet. It's again quite practical. You have a resting moment in the day and it will remind you to send a message to people. It is a remainder of the post card era, so you are on time. Now it's shifting to app messages. The planning calendar is mostly in the kitchen as well. Any more questions? :)

That's the weird thing right, normally surges of right wing nationalism occur during economically hard times and I hear people complaining around me every darn day.. But in reality, I feel we're mostly moaning about nothing because we're in our head supposed to have it even better. Look around the world, look me in the eye and tell me Dutch people need to be so upset about their economic outlook that they buy into the populist rhetoric this hard.. if you can't, like I hope you can't, then please explain to me why people in one of the most prosperous countries on the globe, with a working social security and health care system ( mostly ), ample job opportunities and as most pressing issue a housing crisis and yet we as a people feel a need to vote in a party which is totally opposed to any kind of immigration, and now we've handed that party both the minister and secretary of state of the immigration department which is a clear signal the other 3 parties involved in this government are totally fine with this cabinet because they feel the population is buying into all the populist statements made by the parties which won the last election. Even the agencies assigned to actually work out plans from the political parties and judge them on feasibility and outcome say the current wish list of plans are both wishful thinking and if not wishfull thinking then not clear in their beneficial outcomes. In my opinion, people feel their 'happy place' is attacked by the world events... first a pandemic and ofc the current orc invasion of Ukraine and the genocide committed in Gaza. Sure. this has also real world influences, inflation and especially energy pricing. And it's true that years of VVD have made sure the lower part of the economic ladder wasn't really the thing the government was the most concerned about ( to describe their agenda mildly ), and if you're on a social minimum the psychological influence this has on views off the government will be higher in a more prosperous country. So it's normal to see more people who want the government to put them first.. so I guess I understand the votes the populists got when that's literally what they promise ( even if their plans are not actually feasible, or when they are will not have the effect they predict and want ). Even when I think I can explain why something happens on a larger scale, I still can't understand it on an individual level ( unless that very limited special case where you're on or below social minimum income, because being poor in a rich country will make you more unhappy, and you lack the critical thinking to recognize that a party which never had their plans publicly worked out and backed up with feasibility or result studies is not the one to look for to actually change their economical situation for the better on the long run ... especially a party which not till this election had the stance The Netherlands should follow the United Kingdom and exit the European Union as you can't have a more clear marker of not having any economical sense and thriving on nationalism then thinking The Netherlands would be in a better trading position world wide on our own, or as part of the European Union ).

You know those working hours....I worked in the transport section. Yes four evening+night+morning a week, yes only four days. But 55 hours =60 hours minus 5 x1.15 free time. This free time is made by European law. Sleeping in my truck, never go abroad, only in the Netherlands, making between 500km and 600 km a shift. A lot of my colleges worked 60 hours or more, excluded free time. Of course, by European law we were allowed to make 48 driving hours a week, but trucking is not only driving. You know, those nice working hours who are displayed in lot's of video's are from expat's. The one who have nice IT jobs etc., they are not representing the really working class of the Netherlands. Yes we were payed per working hour. It doesn't mean we were part-timer. We all had full-time contracts. I'm not complaining. But I saw a lot who didn't take all of the free hours/vacation days. Not because the boss, because there own money.

The government decides what must be minimally covered by the assurance. The companies compete on issues outside the basic package. People with low income get a subsidy to pay their assurance premium. There is also a collective health assurance for special costs. Like psychiatric hospitals, district nurses, and other more social health care.

Responses to the question of how happy people are, are strongly influenced by their culture. Admitting you're not happy is in many cultures a no no. Just say you're happy, whether you are or not. Not just the Netherlands, but many countries. Compare suicide rates of countries with their happiness scales, you'll be surprised. Those indexes are skewered. Depressed people usually smile investigation about it away.

Farmers ABSOLUTELY still use them a lot, in the east and northern parts. They protect your feet pretty well (even better than modern work shoes, because they only protect your toes). It is cleaned in seconds, with just a bit of water and last but not least, they last much longer than normal shoes

As if child care subsidies are a good idea. I (and everyone else) have to work more and pay more taxes so that people who have kids can put them in buildings with fences around them. These "child care facilities" are basically prisons, the kids arent even allowed to go outside to play. People go to work to pay for this service, instead of working less and raising their kids themselves. It doesnt make sense. Unless you hate your kids and want to focus on your career. But then, maybe just dont have kids?

We can spent more time with family, friends, spous and hobby's, and also every child will have every 3 months childsupport, we pay every month about 135 euro a month, for 1 aduls, but children are free until the age of 18 for healthcare. When people have a minimum salary and they cant afford a social house or health care, our government will give rent and healthcare allowance, so they still can live in their homes. And also our kids can play outside, without parents present. There is good public transport everywhere. Childrent are more independent from a early age. Yes, we pay a lot of taxes, but i dont mind, we all can see that our government spent the money well. And i know if something will happens to me, i have a good social vangnet. So you dont have to be affraid to kick out of the rent house. But we have a big problem with the housing market, they have to build more houses, because the children have to live with there parents when they are on the age of 35, because they can't afford the rent or buy a house. that have to change. I was on the age of twenty when i was out of my parents house.

In the Netherlands you get per child around the 200 euros a month for feeding m and other costs and once every 3 months you get 500 ish euros for clothing books etc. this is on top of your own personal benefits. Like health support or housing. This combined can also be around 400 euro or more per month depending on the person living space. So i understand Any immigrant coming here. Yes they are coming with alot, but cant blame m really.. Free money and a shot on life are not everywhere

Exactly. It's such a niche sport😂 I love it, though. Every year when November approaches I start checking when and where the worldcup meets are being held and watch it on the ISU channel...funny thing is that competitions abroad have very low crowd attendance yet the Dutch make it seem as if its the most important sport in the world. Even the Canadians weren't aware there was a worldchampionships being held in their own country and the tickets were free😂

The Dutch are far from always better at iceskating: Eric Heiden, Shani Davis, Jordan Stoltz.

Those are individuals. As a collective, the Dutch are pretty dominant. Eric Heiden comes from an era when you didn't need to specialise. Shani was a dominant middle distance skater until Denis Yuskov, Koen Verweij, Thomas Krol and ofcourse Kjeld Nuijs who has broken Shani's records in terms of titles on these distances and personal bests. Jordan Stolz is by far the most exciting speedskating prospect. I will agree with that. He is a prolific middle distance skater and sprinter. In the all-round competitions, his sprint and 1500m makes him tough to beat. But it's not something he would be able to consistently do. Jordan is unbeatable on the 1000 but has competition on the 1500,500 and he's never going to win a 5k the most impressive thing about him is his age.
