Bo has said in interviews that while he would probably consider himself atheist, he has no problem with religion or religious people, and that people should just do what they want as long as they’re not hurting anyone, and as an atheist myself I wholeheartedly agree with that. As long as you’re not using your religion as an excuse to put other people down (homophobic people for example) then people should just let people live their lives. I do think he made some good points in this rant though lol

I'm so sad most people don't get the "Debra Messing's finger in a holy place, Hail Mary full of Grace" reference. Debra Messing played Grace on the TV show "Will and Grace"...so her finger in...yeah. Bo's a twisted, brilliant dude for some of the wordplay he throws out there :D

Appreciate your thoughts, I was raised where I feel I should be cringing at what Bo says not agreeing with it. Unfortunately, I have seen too much hypocritical actions from devout Christians (obviously not all, just the ones who advertise their extensive knowledge of their religion) and this rant hits way too close in truth for me. Thank you for reacting to this one!

I’ve never clicked on a reaction faster. I love this song and your breakdown was awesome!!! I see this song as a kind of prequel to “from gods perspective”. When Bo was younger (like a lot of young budding agnostics/atheists) he went HARD against the scripture he was indoctrinated with and the ways it’s passages are cherry-picked to serve peoples desires and nothing else. Leviticus 45 (technically 25:45) is indeed about owning slaves and the 10 verses following it lay out the does and don’ts to people being property. Before the 14th amendment was ratified, this was one of the biblical passages used by slave owners and racists to argue against abolishment and equal rights. All across the country (not just the south, there were plenty of pro-slavery dickwhams in northern states) this section of the Bible was used as a moral thumbs up from god to continue their way of life. Obviously now, this section has taken on more of a metaphorical meaning and is “not meant to be taken literally”…but, since our country has always been predominantly christian it was at one point used successfully to explain away the immorality of fucking SLAVERY. And throughout the Bible there’s a bunch of other passages that terrible people choose to take literally even when the surrounding passages aren’t. The section about the pope doesn’t mention any Bible references, but that famous “man must not lie with man” is also from Leviticus. Homophobes LOVE taking that passage literally while completely ignoring/explaining away everything else around it. I think the switch to talking about Hurricane Katrina is just another double down on how fucked up our country is. When you’re a minority, thoughts and prayers are all you get. Love your reactions! Keep ‘em coming! Cheers!

But the point Bo makes, especially in regards to slavery in the Bible, is that people try to defend it by saying it’s all metaphors or some parts are metaphors while other parts are to be taken literally. Who gets to decide which is which? I think it would probably be more logical to say that the Bible was written by a bunch of people trying to understand the world around them and then re-written/ translated over the years by people who wanted to use it a source of authority and power. I personally don’t believe in any of it, but I think people should be allowed to believe what they want as long as it isn’t used against others. That being said, I would hope that people understand history enough to know that a book written 2000 years ago is very unlikely to be inspired by some god and should be understood simply as another piece of historical and fictional literature.

Bo grew up in a all boys catholic school and eventually pushed away from religion because he was being a rebel and he thought it was cool. Yes, there are many parts in the Bible that aren't to be taken literally. There are many stories that are used as analogies or teach some lesson. There are those. But there are also parts that are simply black and white. They aren't stories to teach lessons. It is what it says it is and it does what it says it does. The buying and owning of slaves is one of those. It specifically tells you how you are to buy slaves, from where you are to buy slaves and how long you can own them for. The Bible tells you how you can trick a slave that is about to be set free, into owning them for life. Which is if the slave master was to let the slave take a wife, and maybe even have children. If its a slave that only has to do 7 years, after that 7 years they are free. HOWEVER, the wife and his children are not free. The slave owner owns them for life. And if the slave chooses not to leave his family, the slave owner can take him before the town, drive some sort of nail or stake thru their ear (or nose?) marking them as slaves for life. Does any part of this sound like a fable or a lesson? Now of course the religious apologists will attempt to justify this by calling the slavery, indentured servitude. Saying things like....."Its not real slavery, like what happened to the Africans. Its just like a job you have to go to and work off your debt for so many years" No it's not. Anybody whom you can own for life, and even beat them, as long as they don't kill them or put out their eyes or teeth, is a slave. Anyone who they can bequeath to their children to own as well, is a slave. PERIOD.

Most baby atheists tend to be pretty angry with it - I can’t imagine why lol He has since softened on the militancy but maintains the position. @@nullakjg767 I get what you mean, and I bet you and I would agree on a lot around the history of this topic, but I do see harm that comes from being too narrow here. For one thing, it can inadvertently give the impression that the shift away from theism is a fad that can be attributed to modernity, and so can be dismissed by the people who don’t need a reason to dismiss in the first place. I think I see it as handing theists a red herring for THEM to make ME chase lol It’s a big conversation thats hard to have in a KZbin comment section lol Sorry to be so wordy
