I'd just like to inquire what your understanding of post-modernism is in relation to his songs? I don't know how this comes across, but I'm genuinely curious.
@weasel68432 жыл бұрын
@@RS-fy9hb i don't know why the other person implies postmodernism and cynicism are opposites, because i think bo is extremely postmodern precisely because he's cynical: postmodernism is a cynicism towards metanarratives. i think the best example of his postmodernism is the song where he reacts to himself: he creates a narrative, and then immediately criticizes this narrative, and then he criticizes the criticized narrative... this is a very postmodern construction, because there's no overarching framework that he can refer to to get a sense of grounding, and even the narrative that he's endless self-critical is criticized what i like about bo is he has these profound moments of postmodern critique while still maintaining a sense of the real, lurking in the background (always mental health, but in "inside" he also constantly comes back to climate change)

Post-post-modernism*
@kevinholmes10482 жыл бұрын
@@snugglydove6846 Or what I think is the more fitting synonym "metamodernism." As you describe @weasel it's the cynicism of post modernism taken to absurdist conclusions in a way that sort of "breaks the fourth wall" or "goes meta" and calls back to wanting a sense of genuine sentiment and invoking the need to synthesize and construct new values from the wreckage.
@RS-fy9hb2 жыл бұрын
@@weasel6843 It had me confused as well, and it's why I asked for how he understood it xD. imo, post-modernism isn't particularly useful, if it wasn't for comedy or as a tool to dissect seemingly established and unshakable values. The anti-capitalist foreshadowing comes right at the start, hitting a piano sting hard on "the secret is the world can only work, when everything *works* together" It's a really neatly made song. Bo himself represents our fascist-capitalist society (at least, the direction it's headed) and Socko represents the underclass who, no matter how much they know about how corrupt their rulers are, are not able to do anything meaningful about it because what they need to live (the means of production) is controlled by the ruling class. Socko can't rebel during the song, then at the end it's pointed out that even if you comply, you are still disposable to them.
@entropy79992 жыл бұрын
and the subtle marxism with the 'gives what they can and gets what they need' relating to 'from each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs' works great to just frame the entire song. The underlying message (at least, in my eyes) is that even the conversation about dismantling systemic violence and oppression is held within that same framework of oppression, and thus is defined by what is granted. Not only are people's rights not guaranteed, but neither is their ability to even discuss said rights, and if things get too out of line, then thats when you remember 'who's on who's hand here', and snap it goes. The discussion is permitted so long as action is not taken. It's just such a great multi-level commentary on late stage capitalism from an anti-statist left perspective, super impressive work by bo :)

I feel like this really encapsulates how it feels like to grow up, because when you're a kid they tell you everything all cutesy and nice, but when you are about to be an adult, everyone just says "prepare for the worst", but they don't try to explain what the "worst" is. You're left to discover all this disgusting and confusing nonsense yourself very quickly, which only leads to more confusion and hopelessness. It's such a drastic shift, and everyone usually tries to excuse all these terrible things by saying "that is how the world works" We have to try and fix it, but when we indulge in this ring of corruption, greed, and general dread, we end up trying to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt because "it's life"

The fact you can't even SAY or TYPE some of those words on KZbin proves Bo's point. You can't use the word ped*ph*le without censoring it, under any context even if you're condemning them. So, this ends up normalizing stuff like "minor attracted person" - it's quite odd.

Bo recently started reading Marx in quarantine. So this is most likely inspired by that. It's funny to see bo here, who plays the "rich white liberal" spouting ideals like "gets what they can and gives what they need" which is reworded from Karl Marx's "From each according to his ability". It's esentially showing how liberal corporations use progressive and/or class conscious movements to gain a better image and money, for their own self actualisation.

There's so much about this song that isn't even in the lyrics. Bo is obviously the elites and people with power, and Socko is the oppressed. At the beginning of the song Bo is only singing about nature and how in nature things work in harmony but he doesn't mention anything about humanity. And then Socko says "I probably wouldn't say anything you haven't said" because he doesn't know that Bo was only talking about Harmony in nature and not the reality of humanity so when Bo gives him a platform to speak he speaks about very real topics. Bo wasn't expecting it and wasn't really paying attention, but he allowed it up until Socko called out Bo specifically And then Bo immediately used his power over Socko to get him to comply and say only what Bo will allow him to say. And of course as soon as the song is over and Bo has no more use for Socko, he takes him off his hand essentially trapping Socko in purgatory until Bo needs him to be his puppet again and use him to entertain.

This song is beyond genius. Bo's intellect and insight is beyond underrated man, and the way he demonstrated the truth in this funnily tragic musical way parodying a kid's song style is its own genius as well. Right after getting the sock to comply, he still takes him off anyway demonstrating the sock's complete lack of choice in the matter, just that he wants his compliance because of his ego's thirst for power, when he can just kill him off (or send him back to the suspended liminal space he was in lol) any time he wanted. Not to mention how throughout the sock's rant he was just smiling and nodding like a psychopath and being like, "Oh how cute, this sock thinks it can make a difference." This is exactly how the elite look at regular people. The fact that this was allowed on Netflix, a major corporation that the song practically criticizes as part of the sock's rant, is sort of like Bo allowing the sock to talk knowing it won't make a difference anyway.

Recommend Channel 5 news, Nerds and Hell of a Ride by Bo. All three are often overlooked, as they do not appear on any Comedy Special.

Comedy music. I’ve felt it’s absence on this channel lately. Where’s the Weird Al?

_Inside_ is his (up to this point) _magnum opus_ - you (whoever is reading this) _need_ to watch the whole thing from beginning to end.

I'm dying here laughing. Sir, you clearly were not familiar with art of Bo Burnham before… it goes dark, it goes extremely real, it goes straight to the point. On instant…

Every single piece of Bo Burnham content it’s absolutely worth it! if it has Bo Burnham’s name on it absolutely introspective and absurdly intellectual. he has been ahead of his time for the last decade words cannot describe how genius this man is I hope a lot of people get to realize how bo has changed the way we view things

Bonus for using the word liminal... Haven't watched Bo Burnham in a while but he definitely leveled up .. Lol hilarious

Dont watch/listen to the songs from "Inside" seperately. I dont care if you upload it or not, but its a crime to not watch them as part of the special the first time you hear them.

A lot of people are going to recommend the new stuff from his Netflix special, but I'm gonna be the first to suggest the classic "Words, words, words" by Bo Burnham. Only if you like wordplay and bars though.
