For some time BTS couldn't really admit that the song was about the tragedy, because the government was blacklisting artists for speaking out about this. It came out years later that BTS actually visited the families of the victims after the disaster happened and I'm pretty sure made donations through BigHit even though they didn't have much money themselves back then. And obviously, they risked their career by that move. They were already being shot at by a lot of people in the industry (accusations of plagiarism and sajegi and other things) and through this they risked turning the government against themselves too. Finally, last year, they pretty much admitted that the music video is related to the tragedy. But BTS have always wanted their music to be approachable for many different people, so of course, you can definitely interpret the video differently based on your own experiences. I'm really glad that you took your time to look into everything and I can't wait for the Italian ARMY one. But it is really hard to see you cry. Maybe we should recommend something more upbeat. Like Mic Drop. That one's fun and the lyrics are funny 😄. But since you love symbolism, I feel like you will definitely find a lot to dive into in ON (official MV - lots of religious symbolism, among other things) or Blood, Sweat & Tears (Demian by Herman Hesse, art and mythology). I'm glad you're taking a little break between the videos. It is said that ARMY is always one "bogoshipda" away from tears and this song is why.

This is not true at all. The black listing was happening in 2015-2016 and BTS was not involved. The government doing the blacklisting was voted out of power and the president was jailed. Spring Day was not written until 2017, long after the blacklisting had stopped.
@Ana-id6uk

@@JoobieLoobieSoobie I think they wouldn't have been listed cause of the video, yeah, because it came out during the protests against the former president - around the time when she was getting impeached largely due to the sewol tragedy (she got arrested a month after the video came out). But they both donated and met directly with the families secretly after the accident, and they performed Am I Wrong on national TV which has a pretty critical political jab in there in 2016, so those things could have gotten them listed in my opinion. P.S. apparently the list was for people critical of her and her party, not just sewol. And getting involved still seems risky, cause what if the trial ended differently.... P.S.S. I think they kept it quiet because Sewol is extremely politicized and to this day every political party has an opinion and speaks out about it. They were already used for so many political agendas, and some claim that they are supporters of the current president and his regime

I'm from south korea and im 18 years old. After the incidents in 2014 i remember back then my father was one of the rescuer, and i remember after the incident some of my friends from dawon high school are all crying all day for the whole month. I was sad and devastated during that time, im still young way back when this happened. And this is what we south korean teenagers promise to ourselves after the incidents WE CAN RESPECT ELDERS, BUT THOSE WHO ONLY DESERVE IT, FOLLOW OUR ELDERS AS ALWAYS BUT TO THOSE WHO ONLY DESERVED IT. Im a from korea and im an army and this is the most tragic incidents that happened to us💔 and up until now it hurts.

Take your time with the Italian Army version. They have made almost a documentary with real life clips and these are very very hard to watch. Also don't hesitate to pause that, too - they are cramming a lot of information in very quickly. Spring Day to me is an absolute masterpiece expressed in visuals, music and lyrics. No matter how much it makes me cry. And yes, we must never forget what happens to systems of power if we look away too long.

Notice the very first slide: This explanation is about the MUSIC VIDEO. And I think it's correct. As for the song itself, it can be interpreted many ways, including the way this MV director chose. But a lot of ARMY do not know that BTS actually did write a different song that includes verses specifically about the Sewol Ferry sinking and cover-up. It's called "Am I Wrong". And if the corrupt government responsible had not been toppled shortly after, they might have faced repercussions for that song. A lot of the social protest songs from BTS are more obvious to people in South Korea because the topics are very specific to that country. BTS have quite a few subversive social commentary songs. They are carrying on a tradition that began with the very first K-pop group, Seo Taiji and Boys. Seo Taiji was EXTREMELY controversial, banned, censored, attacked. But he also forced a lot of cultural change. At his 25th anniversary concert he brought BTS on stage and literally passed the protest song torch by doing 8 songs with them, even letting them add a rap verse to his most controversial song, "Classroom Idea". Lots of people who don't understand Korean or know who Seo Taiji is think BTS was doing "nazi cosplay". If you want to know the real story, you should react to the video called "BTS did Nazi cosplay? No, it's not true - classroom idea (Eng. lyrics)". And you will get to watch BTS do a performance like nothing you will EVER see anywhere else. FYI the backup band is Gukkasten, best rock band in South Korea. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rne5dZppl9lsm80

Take rests when you need. Spring Day will always touch hearts. BTS constantly are talking about societal issues and if not, they have plenty of introspective songs with deep messages that can touch hearts once again. The fact that the members are so into their music (by contribution) and what they put it in lyrically makes it another thing as well. Artists talking about this issue directly faced major issues and consequences with the government (banning) so it was a huge risk in itself to imply anything directly for BTS. They're constantly changing the game and I've never seen an artist like them with such a diverse range Can you check out the Rise of Bangtan docuseries? Since you're exploring more K-pop groups it'll give you some backstory about it and also what made BTS different. For example, in the first episode, it tricks us into thinking the company was as strict as all these other companies when in actuality BTS had more leniency. I'm not saying they didn't have tiring schedules, but it was more so their dedication than being as forced upon. The creator of the series just got noticed by a Rolling Stone author who used it to get to know BTS more before interviewing them

You use your title track to lure people in but if your b-sides can't show that ur group is special then you're not going to survive. - Reiteration of form of therapy He needs to check out Rise of Bangtan for sure if he's going to continue venturing out with more K-pop groups (let's remember to respect everyone though). It'll be interesting for him to compare to the K-pop industry and then what BTS did with small similarities and big differences. Spring Day is a phenomenal song but this is yet another one of their surfaces. What made BTS so different that they stand out from K-pop? K-pop just one label for them. But how are they more than their "competitors" ?

@@nelliezamborsky3224 Yes, especially watching the poor desperate parents crying for help from the Govt and the Coast Guards who did nothing. Most survivors were saved by fishing boats. The Coast Guards came very late and kept waiting for instructions. A few good journalists had interviewed those voluntary civilian divers who were prepared to dive in and save any survivors during the golden hours. Their equipments were being sabotaged. The worse was that a couple of civilian divers committed suicide afterwards due to the post trauma of recovering many young students' bodies. This tragedy could be prevented if not for the greed and corruption of their Government, Conglomerate Firms and irresponsibilities of the Captain and some crews.

I'll always remember this, because I was around 14? and had just been on a school trip to another country via ferry I'll never forget how my mom broke down at what happened to these students from around the world because she could relate to the fear so much She sat me down and gave me a talk about how if I ever felt my life was at risk or in any sort of danger, no matter what an authority figure or teacher said I should do what I can to survive, and drag my friends with me.... I imagine its not a talk many parents think about preparing to have with their children, but it stuck with me

But yeah, spring day is a tough one. When they recovered some of the phones from the ferry, they were also able to recover some footage that the students took while they were waiting. It’s some pretty heart wrenching stuff and yeah, you can clearly hear the Captain telling them to stay in their spots while the ship is literally tilted like 45 degrees. And this song came out in spring of 2017, which is also when the ship was finally recovered from the ocean, 3 years after the incident occurred

This is one of the most sincere reaction for Spring Day. Not only because you pay attention to the lyrics, the M/V and the theory surrounding it... but most of all, with your genuine interest in the tragedy. You looked it up in the middle of your reaction. And chose to read it all by yourself, just to have a grasp of what happened. THIS, I believe, is the best way to look at this situation. Awareness, empathy, and to gain the lessons from this tragedy. With that, you went above the song and the video, and put the message up and above - to reach and touch and enlighten everyone. This brought me to actually realizing that I haven't discussed this with my son and the idea of obedience with the elders also have a certain limit, most especially if its putting safety in question. Thank you. Appreciate this so much.

They DID say that ofcourse there will be other interpretations but "lost" is the general theme. P.P.S. i kept refreshing your page yesterday waiting for this one! 😭 I clicked so fast! LOL. Don't worry. "Spring Day" became a comfort song for a lot of the survivors and their family hence it IS very special to ARMY! It's just a reminder that we all have each other and #YouNeverWalkAlone (the album title, btw). P.P.P.S. This song NEVER left the TOP 100 charts for 4 and a half years now. It also rises up every comeback. We call it the QUEEN although Yoongi/SUGA calls it "ZOMBIE QUEEN" because he says, and i quote "it just never dies". 😂😂😂

Korea for the tragedy-, there is even a graduation ceremony held for the students on the year they were supposed to graduate -- thank you again for reacting- this song is still in the s.k. charts even though it came out in 2017 -- 💜💜💜💜

if you like symbolism you are going to love BTS. most of their songs and videos have deeper meanings. i usually listen to metal/rock music but BTS songs are so meaningful and well written that i almost instantly became a massive fan.

That's what they do for us...paint a beautiful story that's open to interpretation. They're that kind of artists. They're always striving to send a message and positive energy to the world. ON stage? True professionals. OFF stage? Complete goofballs. Philanthropy & Charity etc...? Beyond everything and more. 😭💜

This song has so much meaning to me!!!! 10 years ago I lost my son 14 years ago I lost my best friend and first love to suicide, and 8 years ago I lost my daughter. They all died, when I was at my weakest. I couldn't think about then to any capacity, then I hear this song and the lyrics made me realize that I am not the only one going through a tough loss. There are people who understand me. BTS took me out of winter and put my in spring. I listen to this song everyday. It's the first thing I listen too and the last. It tells me it's ok to grieve and that it's ok to move on. BTS told me through this song that it's ok to be happy!

If you like When artists use books as simbolism you will like BTS Wings era. Blood Sweat & Tears MV are inspired by Hermann Hesse book "Demian". There is so many references in that MV to so many things, starting from Christianity to greek mythology, philosophy, art pieces. Add to that choreography that is also telling part of the story. That one is real brain breaker.

Appreciate your open mind and ability to be vulnerable and open with your emotions. Spring Day and Spring Day explained was one of the things that cemented my journey as Army. But once you go through the Bangtan Universe, you will really experience the beauty of BTS, their artistry and storytelling powers. Their own hopes, dreams and struggles are intertwined in the fictional storyline and music. They have been around for 8 years and have been on an uphill battle from the beginning. That is why a common theme in their music is that your hardest times eventually become the brightest stars in your life as you overcome each hurdle. You come out a better and stronger version of yourself and we should love ourselves with all our faults and mistakes. "Crash Course to BTS 2020" is a good watch and gives you a taste for what their discography represents, how it's organised and themes without spoiling anything. 💜

There are aactually videos recorded by the students inside the ship while it sank, you could hear in the speakers the voice telling them to stay put. Just to add a few more comments. I’m 64 years old Asian American woman. I’m new to BTS like you (2019) I stumbled upon your channel while surfing for more BTS reactions. I enjoyed seeing people like me drawn to BTS after knowing more about BTS. My son makes fun of me because I sing and dance to their music . I would stay up all night just watching their videos. They make me laugh, smile and feel young again. They are my companion on lonely nights. My son is in college so I live alone. I’m glad that you like BTS and hope you can also become an Army to add to the already millions all over the world. Like my comments earlier, I stayed up all night waiting for your reactions. Can’t wait to see your other reactions to Spring Day. You’re in tears watching it and I’m tears watching you. You’re not like the others you do your research and not just jumping from One video to another. You want to get to know them so starting from their beginnings will help you in your BTS journey. I subscribed and I’ll follow your journey.

They were more so blacklisted due to the song Am I Wrong, which most television networks were refusing to play or let them perform only certain parts of the song. That is what lead to the “black listing”. They donated in secret, so that wasn’t the reason.

I happened to be on holiday when this tragedy occurred. I remember at the time the turmoil, the lack of information and the sorrow. I was in Korea again 2 years later and I remember so vividly the parent of the children who lost their lives, demonstrating in the street, seeking justice, seeking answers for their loss. I remember standing on the side of a road watching these grieving parents carrying pictures of their children, walking in the freezing cold rain, sombrely walking up the Main Street, not loud like a western demonstration, but eerily quite. It is something that to this day stays with me and makes me cry. Watching this video, hearing this song, evokes those very vivid memories. I think you can understand why this song has stayed in the Korean charts since it’s release.

Thank you for being one of the few reactors who has been willing to watch an explanation video!! I ask everyone to do it, WHENEVER one is available for ANY song, and am mostly just ignored....can you imagine not knowing now that you've watched? BTS's songwriting is genius, is it not? I believe they had to say there could be 'many theories' in order to avoid being held accountable for telling a story that was unacceptable to the government. The children who died had time to call their parents and videos exist of their plight...it is one part of Korean culture that, at my age, I can both appreciate, but also irks me...obey your elders no matter what. (Even formal language must be used when speaking to someone barely older than you). I love how they tied together SnowPiercer and Omelas in telling the Sewol story. I had to watch SnowPiercer after seeing this and it was a great, eye-opening, movie that is so relevant to society/politics today. Unfortunately, like Omelas, it too involves the abuse of children at the hands of the adults...I won't say more. But, I will say, that I often wonder about the hundreds of thousands of children that go missing every year, who takes them, and what happens to them. Remember how they used to be photos on milk cartons? IMHO, there is something very nefarious, beyond our ability to comprehend, that is going on throughout the world...whether it be human trafficking, sex trafficking, organ trafficking, or something even more evil. As a grandmother of 4, I beg parents to be aware of their children at all times. Again, khamsamnida. Borahae!

Thank you for such a genuine reaction. The Italian Army video is already up and, to me, that one is even more heartbreaking than this one. This one focuses on the MV more than anything else. That one focuses on the actual tragedy and what happened. This one made me cry. That one made me sob uncontrollably and also made me angry. This is why we love BTS so much. Their music isn't just bubble-gum pop, unless they are truly aiming for that, like with Dynamite and Butter. Their music resonates with people and gives them strength and comfort. I'll say more after I watch the next video. Again, thank you for your genuine reaction. Most of us cried the first time we watched this, too and a lot of us still cry.
