This is my reaction to Canadian Comedy where various comedians talk about Canada (including their relationship with USA and other things). Some of this was filmed for Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. Canada seems to have a huge amount of great comedians producing awesome comedy. Who is your favourite?

From what I understand the whole "hand to his face" thing began from a genuine experience one night when he was having a Very Bad Day and went on stage fed up, whining about stuff and incessantly rubbing his eye. People loved it like nothing he'd ever done before and he turned it a signature part of his act. He kills every time.

I agree. If you watch a lot of UK comedy, you can see how Canada grew under its influence. The self-deprecation thing is a huge thing in Canadian comedy bc we are willing to laugh at ourselves and not take things too seriously. It is horribly unfortunate that some of the divisive ooze from our neighbours is leaking through. There are many people who now emulate the hate and divisiness that is so prevalent in the US. So most of us just laugh and hoist a cold one. For now. 😳

I am a bit old school, so I like SCTV. It had some of the greats including John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Rick Romanis, Martic Short and Dave Thomas. Many went on to great careers in movies etc. Second City Comedy Troup started in Chicago and the expanded to Toronto, Canada. The US fed SNL and Toronto fed the SCTV program. Many Canadians ended up on SNL also. Lorne Michaels is Canadian, and the SNL cast included Canadians such as Dan Aykroyd (1975-79) and Peter Aykroyd (1979-80), Phil Hartman (1986-94), Norm Macdonald (1993-98), Mark McKinney (1995-97), Mike Myers (1989-95), and Martin Short (1984-85). There have been many hosts also such as Jim Carrey, Leslie Nielsen, Will Arnett and many others.

Jeremy Hotz is absolutely hilarios! I've seen him 6 times and every time I walk away with sore cheeks from laughing. He's also really nice and meets fans after his shows to take pictures and sign stuff. Canadian treasure!

Both had different styles. Carlin made you laugh and think. Connolly made you fall on the floor laughing and unable to think. I even liked him on a sitcom (can't remember the name), where he was a teacher. It is sad that controversy stifled his comedic career.

The first comedian is John Wing. Brilliant delivery and comedic timing. I haven't seen or heard of him in a while. I know he moved to L.A. quite a long time ago, and was getting more involved in writing. If you can find more clips of him, he will have you in stitches, along with Jeremy Hotz, and Derek Edwards. And you are right, Canadians have a very self depreciating sense of humour. We aren't afraid to laugh at ourselves, and we love sarcastic humour. (understated sarcastic humour... of course). 😁

Yes Montreal is Comedy Central. The city is known for their comedy clubs, the home base for Just for Laughs as well as annual Comedy competitions held there. Its a beautiful city. My favourite Canadian comedians are Rick Mercer and Russell Peters.

As you noted, this video was a compilation of comedians performing at the "Just for Laughs" (Juste Pour Rire) festival in Montreal. It's an annual summer festival, possibly the biggest comedy festival in the world, and it's been going on for decades now, attracting comedians from around the world. This particular video was from the late 90's early 00's I'd say, given many of the targets especially the military jokes. William Shatner (another Canadian) has hosted the festival and had some great skits including his take on "I am Canadian". (But I'm partial to the 12 days of Just For Laughs, which I can't seem to find online at the moment). Just For Laughs Gags was a spinoff show they film featuring practical jokes. The Comedy network (TV station) up here has compiled many of the acts from the galas into shows to air through the year.

I definitely would recommend rick mercer, air Farce, sctv, 22 minutes, kids in the hall, red green. Canadian humour is very self depreciating, dry, often satirical and we love to laugh at ourselves. We are well aware of our stereotypes, and cultural differences between different area of canada too and love to play with them as you can see best with airfare and 22 minutes. I would also recommend russel peters and Jim Carrie's stand up sketches on canada on just for laughs too. Also recommend watching some of the movie Canadian Bacon, especially the scene where candy is pulled over when driving in canada by ackroid.

It is very flattering that you enjoy Canadian culture. You would enjoy the comedy of Jonny Harris. He is quite masterful with his timing and surprising twists on his punch lines. He has a tv series called "Still Standing" in which he goes to small towns across Canada and spends enough time in a town to pull together a half-hour show that is interspersed with a stand-up performance and film footage of the town's attractions. It is very down-home and sweet.

'Raisin' is indeed grape in French. I remember being a young kid many many moons ago and realizing that was the reason why all the grape-flavoured items had raisins in them as well. Tim Nutt remains my favourite Canadian comedian. Pat Thornton is up there as well - he did a show in 2009 called Hotbox that is hilarious and all the episodes can be found on KZbin!

Went to University of Windsor with John Wing. One day he runs up to me at the Student Pub and says, "Dave, I'm going to be a comedian." I said, "You go, girl." Then he told me a dreadful joke: A man is watching Vincent Van Gogh paint and asks what he's painting. Vincent says "It's a self-portrait." The man says "But, it's got a beard, Vincent. You don't have a beard." And Vincent Van Gogh says, "I can't do chins." Despite that John had a great career as a comic.

I served 5 years myself and hated when we went from a great rifle to one that freezes in winter. We always said the best military would be British Officers, Canadian Troops and U.S. toys, it would be unstoppable.

@@arohk1579 Come on, that's just an old wives tale. The C7 never froze during the winter any more than any other rifle. Did a lot of winter warfare training. Just run it dry and it's fine. Don't muck it up with CLP. It turns to sludge. The FAL was heavy. The 7.62x54 ammo for it was big and heavy. The mag didn't hold as many rounds, etc... Besides, our C7's weren't the same as the American M16's. Ours had a different bolt, capable of full auto, made by Diemaco, not Colt. It was all around a better rifle than the American version, and saw less issues. And there's no denying the kenetic energy the 5.56 round had over the .308

@@Trooper599 Give me my old FN any day of the week, We had more issues with the C7 then we did with the FN. And as a soldier your rifle is your life we can't afford for it to not work all the time. The FN was big and heavy but it was reliable and powerful. Then Every soldier is bias when it comes to their weapons, I was one who used both, maybe if the bugs were worked out when we got them it would be different.

Just for Laughs is the largest and best curated comedy festival in English and in French. Each language gets a week in the summer. The mention that this festival is where comedy stars are born was no exaggeration. That is where the Mr Bean character got its debut, for example. While there are satellite events worldwide, the gathering in Montreal is where Hollywood goes to in order to find upcoming talent. The Discover Montreal channel has a video on the festival, if you're interested in learning more about it.

I didn't know Mr Bean (as a British thing) was debuted in Montreal at Just For Laughs! Very smart choice though, and it probably helped a lot! I think the US wouldn't be near as receptive to mime. If they have to work at it, then forget it! ❤🇨🇦❤

One of my most favorite Canadian comedians is John Candy. I would implore you to watch Canadian Bacon and also Strange Brew. Without him, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin and Catherine O'Hara... In the cast of SCTV (second city TV). Srcond City was a canadian live performance comedy show, but really took off a year after SNL did. The owner was worried the talent and clientele would leave for New York. You still get a bit of that cut down in This Hour Has 22 Minutes in todays age. The same show Rick Mercer was in. More recent comedians Russel Peters, Jeremy Hotz, Colin Mochrie (whose line is it anyways), Brent Butt (Corner Gas), Debra DiGiovanni, Sabrina Jalees... And so many more.

Definitely. Letterkenny is a riot. It's not a bunch of comedians doing standup (as in the video you commented on today) but if you get around to looking at Canadian comedy series it's a must watch. Another series is This Hour Has 22 Minutes. And Rick Mercer is one of the creators.

John Candy was an Iconic Canadian comedian. If you want to see a comedy inspired by a real event that happend at the Calgary Olympics in 1988 then you should see him in the film "Cool Runnings" which was also filmed in Calgary.

But at the time that video was made, late 90s, the count was accurate. I vividly recall seeing this bit for the first time as we were living in Edmonton, and the acquisition of the Canadian Navy submarines was in the news, I seem to recall a lot of issues with them. So it was quite topical at the time. I would also add that in my younger days in Victoria I met a number of military people from the US and a few other countries doing joint exercises and the Canadian military was highly respected due to their extensive training and high skill. I was told by Americans mind you, that our Navy was always the 'winner' in various war games, and definitely the top seed. That was 30 years ago but I tend to think its still true.

Yes, West Edmonton Mall had 3 functional mini submarines!😁 They ran along tracks inside the giant aquarium next to the seal show. I rode it once when I was very young and don't remember much except for seeing a shark and an octopus. It was shut down a couple decades ago due to difficulties maintaining them. You can still see them sitting at the bottom of the aquarium.

I’m sure many have already mentioned this but Just For Laughs is a comedy festival held each year in Montreal, Quebec. Comedians from around the world participate. Quebec does have a maximum and minimum speed as do alot of provinces. In Nova Scotia you are supposed to put on your hazard lights if you drive below 70. 😊

Yup! BC also says you've got to be capable of at least 60 for most highways/freeways. Nova Scotia wants you to flash your lights and honk before you pass someone (if you have to cross the centre line to do so) but thankfully only one person ever did that to me. Scared the hell out of me; I almost drove in the ditch. Who even does that?! XD

The festival "Juste pour rire" was created by Gilbert Rozon, a showbizz entrepreneur from Québec. The thing was a huge success and expanded around the world (Thus the no language sketch series). The festival itself, has a regular editions every years in Montréal and Toronto, and some traveling editions. (Paris, Vancouver, Sydney (Australia) and more). Here in Québec, we do like shows (About 100 festivals each year in Montréal alone, praticaly all on a 6 months period), And this is also probably why, Guy Laliberté, an other québecois, created "Le cirque du Soleil". (Head office and training center in Montréal)

At the very beginning, they were just a bunch of local artist, touring the province with a few bus. Yes, most of those clips are from the just for laughs festival. The biggest comedy festival in the world held in Montreal for two weeks each summer. Most comedians had never been to Montreal but heard it was like Paris and a real party town, so they were eager to do something different and gain international exposure. It was a huge success and now is known around the entertainment world as a place to be discovered and push the envelope. My favorite Canadian comedian is Derek Seguin. He puts on an extra thick French Canadian accent in his routine. Sugar Sammy is another Montreal comedian who also is known for doing his show in both English and French during the same presentation. Most audience members are bilingual so it goes over very well. He has also toured all over the French speaking world doing his comedy In French.

That Jeremy Hotz special was one of the first I’d ever seen. Brought me back to being a kid haha. Also, the bilingualism is hit or miss depending on where you grow up and when. I went to a school with French immersion and English, so we had assemblies and things often in both languages and had to sing the anthem in French and English (alternating verses) Also, British Columbia has minimum speed signs on the highways as well.

The first comedian is John Wing Jr. My favorite comedian. I saw him live and when I went into the club I was wearing makeup. When I left after his show I had no makeup and looked like I had been bawling.

Just for Laughs and the pranks show they do is based out of Montreal, but it's now a international touring festival too. 60KM/H minimum and maximum 100km/h on expressway (biggest highways) is real, and it's for safety, so people can merge and change lanes at a closer relative speed. It also keeps the 50km/h and less scooters and small motor vehicles off of them. Also, Rick mercer was a great in political humor/late night for us. Another great group with a very Canadian identity was the Canadian Air Farce, also from the 90s-2000s like your Just for laughs clip you watched. We also have some really fringe comedians who get popular too. Tom Green is one of those fringe/weird comedians, he did lots of things that would make you think of Ali G/Borat actor.

Let's see you do 60 kph on the 40 between the 13 and 25 during the day. Lol. Also the 25 is fucked through the tunnel 24/7 with construction. Drove through Montreal this morning around 2:30 am, 40 was closed in 2 spots Westbound, had to take the 13 South to the 20 West and saw the 20 East closed completely yet nothing being done, not to mention the worst f*cking roads in all of Canada. It's a shit hole Province with POS residents. If not for work, I'd never go back.

I’m pushing 80 y/o and some of these people I wasn’t familiar with. A Canadian comedian I think is hilarious is Ron James. I find his quick witted humour just the best. He just fires them off one after the other. We used to have guys like Wayne and Shuster way back and they were pretty funny too. They were on Ed Sullivan quite a few times.

The submarines aren't at West Edmonon mall any longer. They removed them quite a lot of years ago. I live near Edmonton but haven't been to that mall for years and then it would have been to take my daughter for lunch when she worked there. Leasing is very expensive there, so that means the extra cost falls on the consumers.

@@francelaferriere6106 There are no aquatic animals there at all any longer. They even removed the fish aquariums that used to be there. From what I heard they were not maintained or looked after properly. I don't know if they voluntarily gave the animals up or they were ordered to do so. That mall isn't what it used to be. One of the best places there was Bourbon Street. There were excellent restaurants. All the good ones pulled out. They charge way too much for rent there.

West Edmonton Mall no longer has the submarines. That was the running joke, that the mall had more subs than the navy. It is no longer the largest mall in the world, but the largest in North America. It has a water park, amusement park, ice rink, lagoon, pirate ship, etc.

"Raisin" is French for "grape" :) That comedian is Jebb Fink, an American who married a Canadian decades ago and made Calgary his home. He spent many years on morning television shows and performing in nightclubs - today, he operates "Jebb's Joint" at the Crossroads Market, specializing in Italian pastas, sauces, and other food. He's a really fun guy to just hang out with over a beer :)
