For me, one of the most intense scenes was when Magda Goebbels poisoned all of her children, one after the other.The silence in that scene was almost overbearing. It showed very impressively what kind of madness had manifested itself in our country and in Europe at that time.

Bruno Ganz was an amazing actor. He played Hitler like I always imagined him. When I saw this scene with my grandfather (he was 9 years old, when the war ended), it felt like a gut punch for both of us. My grandfather mumbled: „So that’s how he thought about my father? We did everything he wanted and he was talking like that about the soldiers, who fought and died for him?“ His father disappeared somewhere in Russia and was never found. I hold the hopes high, that someone might find his remains, so we can bury him next to my grandfather. 😢

The whole movie 'Downfall' is extremely intense. It lets you feel as being a part of the scenery. When watching it, you get the feeling of sitting with all the ministers, generals, officers, ordinary soldiers, and staff in the bunker the underground beneath Hitler's 'Neue Reichskanzlei' in Berlin of April 1945. It is one of, if not the best, World War II movies ever made. Bruno Ganz impersonates Hitler in a way no one did it before and after him.

Bruno Ganz, one-of-a-kind, former bearer of the Iffland-Ring (a ring for the best actor in the german speaking countries always chosen by the former bearer of the ring after his death) - imo as a movie nut, only comparable to Daniel Day-Lewis; just my 2 cents

Bruno Graz was in fact Swiss, not German, and as has already been said a brilliant actor. It disturbed and saddened him that his performance as Adolf Hitler was 'abused' by trivial, cheap comedy 'adaptations'. For him, and countless others, the subject is too serious to trivialise - a matter of opinion I guess?

Ulrich Matthes, who played Goebbels in this movie, said in a tv interview a few years later he had to play a totally different/positive role in his next movie to get rid of the evilness he had to perform here, iIrc.
@germaniatv1870
@germaniatv1870 2 күн бұрын
Honest question: Was Goebbels really so evil? There is the Goebbels literature, his broadcasts ect... in all of his speeches he demands peace between the nations. The day England declared TOTAL WAR on Germany he made the "Total War" speech. So the time and context of Goebbels Total-War speech is distorted. Historically correct England declared Total-War until Capitulation on Germany and thats when Goebbels asked "Do you want the total war?". Historically correct England, Poland, USA refused all peace terms made by Germany. England attacked Germany for 6 months until Germany finally also declared war on England. And thats when Goebbels asked if the people are ready for a Total-War declared on Germany. - Looking at the Interviews Goebbels gave to the US & British press, the guy inb this Movie looks 100 times more evil as the real Goebbels. And when Goebbels speaks he sounds soft, humble and always demands peace in all of his speeches/interviews. And thats the point. That the real Goebbels does not act, speak and look like the Goebbels here in the movie. Im not holding the back of Goebbels, im just saying how it is. Thus: Goebbels asked if they are ready for "Total War" which was declared on Germany by Britain/USA as they declared war on Germany first. I dare you to research History before researching a movie.

Are those the official subtitles? Because they are already wrong here: Hitler doesn't say "If Steiner attacks", he says "With Stainers attack" - so not "if", but "when". That distinction is quite important in this scene.

Today this movie is well recieved and alongside Das Boot one of the best war / anti war films ever made. However. When diretor Oliver Hirschbiegl first pitched his idea, to show Hitler based on a biography of his employees, there was outrage. Many people couldnt understand how he wanted (quote) "to show a moster as a human" Hirschbiegl later said. "If the leaders of na*ipartie had been monsters, with horns and claws, it had been easy, BUT they were humans and THAT was the danger about them"

When I went to school in the 1970s/1980s, especially in the 9th and 10th grades, we students were inundated with the subject of the Third Reich and World War II. The topic was covered in the following classes: German, English, history, politics and social sciences. We were all sick of it, especially because the primary learning objective seemed to be to feel guilty. That's why I largely avoided watching any movies about that time after leaving school. I did, however, see the actor Bruno Ganz in other films and I would say that he was one of the great German speaking actors.

Might have nothing to do with this movie or this "Mr. Steiner" in this scene, I guess, but in 1977 a movie was released called "Cross of Iron". It was produced in the UK, Germany and Jugoslavia ... The second part of this movie was even better. Steiner was played by the british actor Richard Burton (CBE) ... so if you are into this kind of movies, you should check it out.

While the movie itself is really good, the historical accuracy is to take with a grain of salt. It is based on the memoir of Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary.And because that was not enough for the script, they had to use other sources. But: Who would have told anyone about what was said in this room for example? Hitler, Krebs, Burgdorf and Goebbels unalived themself in the bunker. Keitel, Jodl and Göring were executed by the Allies in October 1946. The people in front of the door could not have heard anything. It was a bomb shelter, with massive concrete walls (40-50 cm thick). The door were made of steel. You would not have understood anything... Overall, the movie is great and it might be the most historically accurate, but don't take it as gospel.

@@Ilogunde For Göring, who had once been a fighter pilot, it was certainly a last small triumph to have outwitted his opponents. A few years ago I saw an interview with one of the prosecutors at Nuremberg. I'm not entirely sure whether it was one of the British. In any case, he expressed the opinion that Alfred Jodl was rather unjustly sentenced to death. He said: "If someone like Speer had gotten off so lightly, Alfred Jodl would not have had to die..."

The movie is very respected. Especially Swiss actor Bruno Ganz got a lot of credit for this work. There was also a debate before the movie dropped, if it was ok to play Hitler as this human being, that he also was, of course. There was/is this justified fear, that if you present Hitler as a human being, you soften the horror he created, because you start to feel for him on a human level. It s a valid point and interesting conversation. Bruna Ganz refused to portray him in an over the top, comical fashion and delivered a masterpiece. He set a standard on how to play Hitler in movies. Everything else looks cheap and corny next to this performance now. The cast of the movie includes a lot the of top tier German actors. They did a fantastic job here. Of course it is very subjective, but German movies about WW2 or Nazis etc. feel much more real, authentic and cut much deeper imo. There‘s a different tone to it. The sets, the language, the details often seems more accurate and the sadness of it all comes across better

it's not among my favourites, since I need a bit of coziness to watch something again and again, but Der Untergang (german title of Downfall) is easily among the greatest war movies of all time and imo easily the most important. it makes clear that, while their acts and opinions might be despicable, the nazis are still human and THAT should be what makes their ideologies so terrifying. many american film makers portray the nazis as something that is just evil, often with some supernatural elements, and while that can make for good storytelling, it subtly warps the truth. it makes the whole threat an abstract one of inexplicable evil, but there are lessons to be learned and truths to uncover about ourselves as human beings.
@woodwind314
@woodwind314 3 күн бұрын
" the nazis are still human " - this caused a lot of criticism back then, mainly but not limited to Germany. People obviously feel very uncomfortable with the fact that even the worst people in history were humans, that seeing them in this way points to the uncomfortable fact that everyone of us, in the right circumstances, might be capable of the vilest crimes, to the potential for evil in anybody.

Can anyone help me out by telling me why he pronounced the word Raum with an alveolar approximant (English R sound)? Any help?
@The_real_Arovor
@The_real_Arovor 3 күн бұрын
Hitler was Austrian and they most of the time pronounce the R close to the teeth instead of in the pharynx. But I think it could be due to Bruno Ganz being Swiss and being caught in the moment that he generated the a short soft R in the pharynx. In Switzerland we only pronounce the R in the pharynx, so I guess it’s probably because of that. It’s also said that Bruno Ganz studied Hitlers speech patterns meticulously so I think it was a deliberate choice. Depending on the German dialect both ways of pronouncing the R are correct. But I‘m only a layman, so I can’t really give a more indept explanation. Hope that still helps.
