If you consider watching "Downfalll" i can really recommend it, its propably one of the best german movies, not only in educational value, but also considering quality, acting and storytelling.

I am pleased that you, as a Scot, are so interested in Therma Deutschland. The film "Im toten Winkel"(In the Blind Spot) gives an excellent insight into the last days in Hitler's bunker. In it, Hitler's secretary Traudl Junge, as an old woman suffering from cancer, tells of her experiences in Hitler's immediate environment. Her interview also served as the model for the film "Der Untergang".

Downfall is good for what it is. Of course Oliver Hirschbiegel walked a thin line between accuracy and his attempt to deliver a dramatic cinematic Interpretation of Traudl Junges book "bis zur letzten Stunde". Hitlers telephonist, Rochus Misch (played by Heinrich Schmieder) claimed that the real situation in the bunker was way different. He described Hitler as a ghost, the air was filled with desparation and depression. He was aware that the war was over and he did no longer rant like that. Rochus Misch died in 2013 (9 yesrs after the movie) in the age of 96.

It is terrible to see, how the boys of the Hitler Youth were sacfrificed for the war. Many were as young twelve years old. An old woman from our neighborhood had said , that they hidden three boys aged 15 and 16 at the end of WWII. Because they were also supposed to go to the front to fight.Respect to the family for hiding the boys.💚🙏

Yeah, but a lot of them were also happy to die for Hitler and the Nazi regime. They were surely brainwashed...

My great-grandma shooed a group of Hitler youth away with a broom when they were coming to gather the boys of the village for the Volkssturm. Don't know whether it is a true story though. Could be a "We resisted, we are not bad people" whitewashing for our family or true but for the obviously incoming loss of the Reich and not wanting to waste her son as a lead sponge

3:22 On the foto Walther Wenck looks like the German actor Heinz Rühmann. Heinz Rühmann was famous in the time of the WW2. He played in comedy movies. He plays in movies like „Die drei von der Tankstelle“ and „Die Feuerzangenbowle“ a comedy which was filmed about 1940. Many boys who played the pupils in this movie had already the convocation to the army to get to the war.

Just some details about 2 of the people in the bunker: Traudl Junge, the secretary was one of the most famous eyewitnesses of Hitler's last days and was interviewed a lot. She and Rochus Misch were the last eyewitnesses to tell the story. Wilhelm Keitel was really famous for being especially devoted to Hitler. He was thus inofficially nicknamed Lakeitel by the german people, which is a word play with the word Lakai (lackey).

If you want to learn more about german soldiers and general Walter Wenck that was mentioned in this Video(one of the only somewhat good highranking german generals) than watch the sabaton history video hearts of iron. A great song and a great explanation of the final stand of the 12 german army

It's not so much that he was one of the few good highranking generals (although it has to be said many of those have been sacked by Hitler at that time) but that he took a very proactive role in the fight for Berlin that he put the soldiers and civilians first and the Reich or even Hitler second. That is something that was indeed very rare. Apart from Hitler's fate it was the biggest, most interesting and fascinating aspects of the Battle of Berlin.

​@@windsaw151yes I at first did not want to say good because good is not really a concept but well Wenck was one of the last highranking members that accepted a germany without hitler and thats why he was able to abondon hitler and save so many civilians and the remnats of the 9. and many of his 12. Army
