Finland was invaded by russia in 1939 which started the winter war 1939-1940. Karelia, a region in eastern finland was lost to russia at the end of the war. Finland then attacked russia in 1941. The continuation war lasted until 1944 when karelia was again lost and the people there had to leave a second time to other parts of finland, which is what the song is about.

Was invaded by Soviets. There is differency between invasion by Soviets and by Russians. Like most of the troops in major attack in road of Rukajärvi weren't russians, they were conscrpts from Ukraine, one the reasons they didn't have any good winter gear... Stalin was mental case, same level as Hitler and that guy in Italy... Like Lenin did instructions saying Stalin should be not his successor, but Stalin did just crap power and fucked up the great soviet nation.... And this is commentery by Finnish modern day communisst
