He's one of the founding artists of "Die Anstalt", together with Martin Sonneborn, the former editor in chief for a satirical magazine called "Titanic" and later founder of the aforementioned, more or less.. joke party. They're not completely passive since they try to intervene whenever some illogical or immoral law, rule or guidelines is about to be passed by being hidden in a completely athematical but much more popular legislative proposal. Something, I believe, we have caught from the US, the last time Trump was here.. 🤢 There are videos of his speeches in the EU parliament, in which he (more or less successfully) tries to get politicians to actually read what they are voting on and signing into existence..

@@erikperik1671 Rage is originally French with its roots in Latin. The pronunciation is also much closer to French than German. As for this whole discussion... it's pointless. Languages and words can't be translated 1:1. They have a meaning behind them and different words can have the same meaning and the same word can have different meanings depending on context. All of the above translations would make sense and aren't "wrong" per se.
@theholk
@theholk 10 күн бұрын
@@TheGrouch91 Except in this case it's not one of those "translations exists in the gaps". Particularly because the "wrath/zorn" pair is used very identically in their most iconic uses like "wrath of god" "Zorn Gottes", grapes of wrath -> Früchte des Zorns. It's a bit more complicated with anger and rage to Wut und Rage, because "in Rage kommen" isn't to rage, that would be wüten, Rage is just a more general "emotional turmoil". But Wut would fit anger well. And it is important, because in the bit he makes a distinction between "blind anger" being the thoughtless cousin of wrath. But "rage" is even less controlled, almost animalistic. While his delivery would in Germany be accurately described as "Er hat sich in Rage geredet" and isn't automatically mindless. And it is quite important, because despite the plea here, all we got in the years after was more mindless anger, but no wrath to counter it, hence the voting patterns currently.

He is one of my all time favourites! It is NOT comedy, but true political satire - i.e. "cabaret", in his purest form. Harsh critizism of the ruling government and (!) the ruled dumb masses, too! Georg Schramm is super unique and reigns way above all the others in his style, his intellect and his performance. Even Volker Pispers isn't in his class, in my humble opinion. However, he is addressing a highly intellectual and very well educated audience, which is becoming a scarcity over here. And he is QUICK with his words & thoughts. Most likely super-hard to dubb or translate, at least not without loosing like 80% of the actual brilliance. Personally he is left-wing / socialist by heart, and he truly wants only the best for all people and a fair chance for everybody. He absolutely hates the uneducated but powerful "upper class", esp. politicians, because they are (in his perspective) nothing but opportunistic and without any real insight, knowledge, wisdom or long-term thinking - esp. not for the nation, only for their own well-being. He doesn't want to make people laugh, nor applaud - but to THINK and REFLECT about their own opinions and choices. Which hurts most people. He hides behind his various on-stage characters, because in private he is too afraid to tell his truth in such a harsh way. But as "Lothar Dombrowski", "Oberstleutnant Sanftleben" or as "August, retired printer" he dares to share his view of the unust world.

I can only agree with your great comments. Schramm is brilliant in his field! Unfortunately, no German-speaking comedian can be translated without great losses, and Schramm's is particularly difficult! Schramm is right! The problem is that there is no alternative to politicians, and certainly not "the alternative fD"! They can only destroy what has worked for almost 80 years, even if not perfectly! Who would actually want to live in a dictatorship, apart from idiots and a few people who profit from it! There are politicians in Russia, North Korea and China too, would we want them? We've had that before. We know the results and their consequences. Have some people really learned absolutely nothing from history to fall for the troublemakers, dividers, (AfD, Trump in America, for example), hypocrites and rat catchers?

To me, "Zorn" is _wrath_ and "Wut" is _rage._ In day-to-day speech, few people use "Zorn", which to me sounds a bit antiquated (regional differences apply). The possibility of forming a verb ("Wüten" -> "to rage") also applies, which is neat. Although, "Wut" is the word you'd use in everyday speech, like "anger"

A primary rock of German satire in the post-war era was Dieter Hildebrand who passed away in 2013. His performances are legendary. His particular style is unmatched. He loved to spiral around and prowl at a topic from multiply angles simultaneously, which made him very unpredictable. I believe it is fair to characterize DIeter Hildebrand as the Loriot of german political satire - both in his attention to detail and nuances. Every satirist who came after was inspired by him. Georg Schramm is much more direct and straighforward but is reminding of Dieter Hildebrand in his awareness of detail.

Georg Schramm has carefully developed the characters he plays on stage. In this case he displays a kind of thinking and a certain class of west german society with certain political beliefs. His habitus is the Lower Saxony squire with silesian roots. He fine tuned his style when working with the great Dieter Hildebrand, who was as essential for the post-war political cabaret and satire in western Germany as BB King or John Lee Hooker were for the modern blues or blues rock. The following generations were all inspired by their work. Pispers and Schramm - both worked with Hildebrand and his genius is still living in them.

Although Wut and Zorn have a similar expression they differ in its cause and/or purpose. While Wut is more of an unaimed and less controlled expression which leashes out to everything around, Zorn mostly appears as an expression of anger against false or unrighteous behaviour (although also subjective and based on feelings) which is more directed to the cause which angers you.

In social sciences feelings and emotions are distinguished, feelings being the things you feel and emotions how you express your feelings. Wrath (Zorn) is a feeling and works as intensification of outrage (Empörung). Anger (Wut) is an emotion and describes a destructive way of channeling your feelings. It can result from wrath/outrage but can also be triggered by a series of feelings. I personally agree with Schramm that Zorn/wrath is an important feeling and can be helpful if channeled in a constructive way.

Zorn is more accurately translated as wrath, Wut as rage or frenzy. Wut is fleeting, it's an initial strongly angry reaction to something that is likely to ebb off relatively soon. Zorn, on the other hand, is a persistent, well-founded (though equally strong) reaction, usually to some fundamental injustice (or of God in the Bible when people don't follow his rules). Zorn does not simply go away with time, because something deeply disturbed your sense of what is right.

To explain the nouns Zorn and Wut as the adjectives to them zornig and wütend to an English native is kind of hard, because you intermix both. Let me explain. Anger=Wut and Zorn in your common daily life talks. In literacy it is separated into: Wut = fury and Zorn = wrath. What you what formulate "I am angry!" means "Ich bin wütend!" or "Ich bin zornig!" at the same time depending on the context. Wut is uncontrolled and often suddenly. Zorn is gradually growing until it boils over. It is basically the same and the opposite at the same time. You get angry in the end, but the way to it is different. One is quick, the other builds up. Got it now?

Mert, we don't have them any more. Sure, people like Dieter Nuhr are good, but Pispers and Schramm remain unsurpassed. Each unique in his own way. Schramm is the most intellectual one, his words cutting like a katana. Too bad he's retired now....

A little clarification for everyone not german. Germans liked to find the right word for everything. thats why we have many words that, metaphorically speaking, perfectly name one shade of a greater thing that have in other languages no word for that shade of the same color. another great example would be the words "bereuen" und "bedauern". Both are translated with the same word: "regret". "bereuen" is practically deep regret. when you are really feel sorry and want to repent for what you did. "bedauern" is way softer. It is the feeling when you are sorry about something you have done or that happened to someone else because of something you did in the past, but ultimately can live with the outcome and would do the same again if you were in the same situation. German is full of such distinction words. I mean some of those are used in english day to day life, like "schadenfreude" (that one makes me smile every time i read it in a book or see it used in a fanfiction). Same as "Zorn" and "Wut". "Wut" is when you are angry in the moment. its when something triggers you in the moment. But "Zorn"? Thats the anger you feel about some general concept that makes you angry all the time, no matter the specific reason. like in the instance of this video, if you are angry about the constant failings of the politicians. you know that they could do a great job if they would actually work on fixing a problem and not what bare minimum do we have to agree with so that it helps us win the next election by promising we fix it completely if we win. it makes you angry at them just thinking about it and it does not need a trigger.

He`s a bit a difficult figure, as he always mimics those post war injured military persons, with his fake hand prothesis , still continuing their habits in the 90s and 2000s. But these figures were around in the 60s and 70s but not 70-80 years after the war.

I'm afraid you haven't quite understood. With this figure he represents the highly educated German middle class before the Nazis plunged Germany and then Europe into the abyss. Hence the thing with the prosthesis...

I do not believe he stated his emotions or feelings, while they showed. I believe he worked out at least one way to view greed and why it is so destructive. Thus rightfully calling it evil. He tried to shame the people for beeing stuck in the shortsighted anger for not caring enough to cultivate wrath towards destructive behaviour while showing diffenrent ways to find a better way to stand in for themselfs and arming them with sources to find their own path to a more healthy and fruitful relation with some of our feelings. There was more packed into these few minute. But this is already a lot of letters for a comment.

The german context is irrelevant. The root problem he is talking about is omnipresent in many societies. And his conclusion is timeless. Here a (if just a little) reflection and a smidge of analysis would have made for much better content. There comes a time when just pointing out problems (and mindless clapping) is no longer enough.

I would very much appreciate it if you would not say "politics" as in "Die Politiker" "Die da oben". Please don't generalize. Schramm Pispers, Rether and alike specially destroy neoliberal, bourgeoise, capitalist and far-right politics. Some of them even openly say vote greens or leftists over social democrats, christian conservatives, neolibs or alt-right.
