That’s all. HE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT COHEN SAYING IT WAS THE BEST COVER. That’s fake news.

The first singer Scott takes over the bass when Avi, the bass , has the lead
@DelGuy034 жыл бұрын
Yes! Scott regularly does that when their bass singer has a solo. Scott can cover a wide range from bass to tenor-ish, though baritone is his home territory. A good example of Scott doing this is their video of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," in which their new bass Matt (the only personnel change over the years) takes the lead throughout, and the constant close-ups show Scott holding down the bass line.

An introduction to Pentatonix for you: Scott: the tall blonde guy in the middle with the first solo. He's the baritone of the group but has a range of about 4 octaves. He's just as comfortable harmonizing on the high notes as he is taking the bass line when Avi is singing. Speaking of which... Avi: the guy with the beanie and the second solo. He's an amazing opera trained bass and doesn't have many solo parts but he always kills it when he does sing. He left the group in 2017 on good terms with the rest of the members and helped find his replacement, Matt. Kirstin: the only female in the group, she had the third solo. She has the least solos of the main 3 that you'll find, but she always kills it when she does sing(examples are Say Something, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, all of which are among their best work) Mitch: He's the man with the amazing voice and the final solo in this song. He's a tenor, and has a purely angelic voice. He also has an amazing range, I've heard 5 octaves before. Kevin: an AMAZING beatboxer, that's his main role, but he occasionally shows off his beautiful tenor voice (Imagine is a great example) and his skills with the cello, which he can play while beatboxing simultaneously. Pentatonix got their start on an old competition show called the Sing Off where acapella groups competed against each other for a $200,000 cash prize and a recording contract. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang in choir together in school and have been best friends since they were teenagers. They found Avi through a friend and Kevin through one of his "cello boxing"(playing the cello and beatboxing) videos that went viral. They won the competition, you can still find the performances on KZbin. It's amazing to watch them grow throughout the show. Unfortunately, the record label dropped them shortly after they moved out to make music, so they persevered and self produced for a while until they were picked up by another label. They are the only acapella group to ever win a Grammy, and they have won 3: for their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene ft. Dolly Parton. They're an amazing group, every one of them is one of the most talented singers in the world, and they have never released a bad song imo. Yes they do sound the same live, and yes it is all acapella. They never use instruments except for the occasional use of a cello when they feel it enhances the song (like their covers of Radioactive, Say Something, and Perfect). They have a rule that if they can't do it live they can't release it. I recommend all 3 songs above, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Sound of Silence, Amazing Grace, and anything else you want to hear! Their Grammy winners are all insanely good. I also recommend any of their original songs like Sing, Be My Eyes, Happy Now, The Lucky Ones, etc. Welcome to musical bliss!
@janices53894 жыл бұрын
Basically, if you don't see and instrument, it's their voices only. You will occasionally see Lindsey Sterling (violin) guest with them and they just released a new Christmas song 'Thank You' that has Scott playing piano (a first for them) and Kevin on the cello. There are also a few fan vids out there of concerts where the venue (like The Hollywood Bowl) basically required them to use at least parts of an orchestra - but, again, you will see the instruments if they do. I say all this because Avi is not only a fantastic bass, but can also do overtone singing - ie singing two notes at once. He uses it to good effect to create a very electronic synth type sound on some of their songs.
@AndieO4 жыл бұрын
What he said...lol. he saved me the typing. Amazing Grace is rapidly becoming one of my favorite songs by them. Other groups that really succeeded after Sing Off! are Home Free (Tim Faust's bass is amazing, and Misty Mountains shows him off) and Voice Play (their bass Geoff Castalucci recently released Sixteen Tonnes and should be required listening)

Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! The guy with the crazy high voice is Mitch. Most people react that way to his voice, it's known as the Mitch face amongst the community. He has a 6 octave vocal range. The guy with the beanie left in 2017 and was replaced with Matt (who's birthday is today as of when im writing this!). If you want to see more songs like this one, I'd recommend their cover of Amazing Grace, and their originals Run To You and Light in the Hallway. If you want to see them cover different genres (they cover everything) I'd recommend their Daft Punk medley. It was recorded for $400 in a closet and kitchen and won them their first Grammy

You did see Avi with Home Free. Scott often takes over bass when the bass has a solo. It is Scott. His range is incredible.

This was the first song I saw of PTX and immediately fell in love with the bass. Avi is brilliant he has had classical training as a Basso Profundo. He is their Bass but also sings the higher ranges. He and Kevin (beatboxer) shared an apartment and were the rhythm section ...magicians really lol You might like to see their journey from The Sing Off which they won...it helps to understand how they evolved. The judges named Kevin & Avi the 'Meat & Potatoes' of the group...lol would recommend 'Say Something' for another awesome performance. Kevin does play the cello and Avi does a duet with it lol....but seriously awesome

There are a few live videos, and they still sound insanely perfectly in tune with each other. There’s a live Christmas special of this one, an “Aha” live in Star Vista, and there’s a private performance of the Daft Punk medley, to name a few. You should definitely watch the official daft punk medley video first, to get the full effects, and see why they won their first Grammy for it

I always love when people start their PTX journey with this song and they all go through the Mitch effect. LOL. Always priceless. Scott ( the baritone) is the tall blonde who sang first and he took over the low notes when Avi (the one with the beard sang, and yes, you saw him join Home Free and he did drop it low). The one with the hat is Mitch Grassi and he has an absolutely AMAZING vocal range. He is a counter tenor but he can go low and go into the tree tops with his high head notes. He can also do whistle notes and has astonishing control. Kirstie, the female singer is a mezzo soprano and can go very high and do whistle notes as well. And last is the black guy, Kevin, who is EXTREMELY talented. He is their beatboxer, but he is also a classically trained celloist and he does do both on some of their music. He calls it celloboxing. He can also sing. Avi left the group back in 2017 and they now have a new member Matt Salle, who is just as talented as the rest of them. And you need to always remember when you listen to PTX that except for a few songs where they use the cello, and once Scott played the piano, it is all a cappella. No instruments. What you see on the videos you hear in real life, they don't use any auto-tune or anything else, just their voices and Kevin uses his whole body. Each member is extremely talented. Check out their Daft Punk which they won their first Grammy for, also "Aha" In Singapore live at the star vista. You can hear how low Avi goes and at the same time how high Mitch can go.
@KBAFourthtime2 жыл бұрын
It's "cellist" (the O is dropped in the word for a cello player). And sometimes Kevin does actual singing, kind of a tenor, I believe. A few times, he used falsetto, like in "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)."

You had the breakdown of the group right. Kevin, the guy hitting his chest and stomping is their beat boxer/percussion and Avi, the one that you thought was the bass really is the usual bass singer. Scott, the one who started the song, takes over the bass when Avi sings lead. Mitch, the guy with the really high voice, is, to me, what allows them to have such a balanced sound. He can sing tenor or all the way up to messo-soprano. He gives the group another voice that can hit the notes that a female soprano would usually sing. Avi is no longer with them, a young man named Matt has taken over his place in the group and he's also hella talented. The one female in the group is Kirsten or Kirstie and she has a very powerful, emotional voice that didn't get to shine as much in this song. They have a rendition of "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" that is gorgeous and one of "The Sound of Music" that is also incredible. Oh, and that's their actual voices. They sound almost the same when they sing live. They really are an incredible group.
@bill.godwin-austen4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much spot on! :) Although I wouldn't say that Kirstie doesn't get to shine in this though... when I first heard this in Oct. 2016 when they released it, it was actually Kirstie's verse that gave me goosebumps. Then Mitch came in with the cherry on top of the sundae.

Scott (the blonde guy/ first singer) does the bass when Avi (or now Matt) sings the lead. You can watch their Hallelujah Live Performance from their Christmas special, there you can see Scott doing the bass. Also in Sound of Silence we can enjoy his deep register. If you want to see different song where Scott does the bass I would like to suggest "You're a mean one Mr. Grinch" even though it's not Christmas anymore, haha.
@janices53894 жыл бұрын
Matt does the bass lead on 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch', and Scott covers the bass background, just to be clear. It really shows off Matt's voice beautifully and he obviously had a lot of fun with it.

I listen to their music all the time, but my favorite would have to be "The Sound of Silence". For something a bit different from them, listen to "Radioactive". Kevin (beatboxer) plays the cello while still beatboxing and this piece also has Lindsay Stirling playing violin. Would also recommend "Shallow", "Little Drummer Boy" and "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy."

I'm glad this was your first exposure to the awesomeness of Pentatonix. In my opinion it's the best introduction to the group. As others have probably said, Scott (the first singer) takes over on bass when Avi (and yes, he was in Ring of Fire with Home Free) sings the lead. As you watch more Pentatonix videos, you will see a new bass, Matt, who replaced Avi when he left to pursue a solo career a few years ago. Have fun going down the rabbit hole!
