The walking techniqe for walking on slipery ground (if you don´t have studded boots) is to walk like a penguin. Slightly bent knee and put your whole foot down, not heel first and upper body slightly tilted forward.

Regarding clothing, you definitely have seasonal wardrobe capsule thing going on. I have 4 sets of outerwear: summer, winter, autumn/spring and raincoats. Same with shoes. So you cycle the clothes. I'm currently in the process of washing my summer clothes and packing them up for the winter to make space for my winter clothes. And then in the spring you do the same. Storage capacity is one of the first things I look for in a house/apartment. I would say that for heating insulation is the biggest thing. Usually only the bathrooms have underfloor heating since it tends to be more expensive. Usually Finnish homes do have wall mounted radiators for heating. Either direct electricity (expensive) or water circulated. Really extreme cold weather is a challenge. Mainly going to work. We had -40C at the coldest here and the gas pedal of my car froze while driving. Let's just say it was an interesting trip back home from work. Hitched a ride from co-worker the next day.

Tires are changed twice a year. There are dates after you can change them and dates before you must change, those dates mostly related to studded tires (those after you can change). Friction tires can be used more freely, but after that last date you must have some winter tyres. But there's some common sense about the conditions on the road to consider when changing. That said, I've never owned a car.
@juhokaartoaho
@juhokaartoaho 3 күн бұрын
That ruling about exact dates was actually taken out some years ago since winters have started to come later and end at later points of the year. Now days it only says that you have to have proper tyres for the conditions and in the end cops can give you a ticket if there is no good reason to have studded tyres yet or if you still have summer tyres when it's very snowy and icy.

About the clothes... As an adult the jackets, shoes etc will last several years, but with kids it sometimes feels like an endless fitting marathon.😅 They get taller and the old clothes wont fit anymore. Luckily there is a lot of used clothes available so not everything has to be bought at full price all the time.

I don't think it is just about Brits having a poor attitude. I lived in UK for years and it's avery different thing to have few days a year of snow and ice than to have like six months of winter. We in Finland have to prepare for winter, you can't shut down the whole country for months every year. But if you have just few days every year, it's just cheaper for the society to close the schools and most work places than have everyone try to survive on icey roads with no proper equipment or even understanding how to move on ice. It would unnessessarily burden your emergency services and hospitals.

That car motor heating system is not in every car, but in most cars. It used to be a luxory that only the expensive cars had, or to be installed separately, but as the technology got cheaper and cheaper it got more and more common, and nowadays every new car have it installed as a default.

@@Peppi_Lotta It depends on the age of the car. The older the car, the less likely it has it. But the newer it is, the more likely it has it. I drive pretty old (cheap) cars, and even my cars have in recent years had it. So it is pretty common nowadays, though not all cars (yet) have it.

Especially in the rural settings a wood fired heating oven is a very common auxiliary heating method (and plays nicely with a heat pump). For urban settings the main source is district heating. It's relatively cheap and very reliable, and has the capacity to instantaneously ramp up on a cold snap. I remember in the late eighties there was a winter with temperatures well below -30 deg C in the south, no problem with the heating.

Hello! You wondered if us finns can use winter tires year after year, but there is certain depth in the tire-pattern that is still estimated to be safe to drive on winter-conditions. 4 tires costs at least 600€. I drive maybe 15000Km/winter, so I must change tires every two years. If degrees drop under -30 celsius, I must heat the engine 1.5-2 hours before starting. Otherwise it dont start and if it does, it wears off the engine in no time. And you allways have to check that all fluids in the system can take -40 degrees. ...Kaisa from Finland

It's meny ways to heat homesome in Finland. Air heating in this video is very rare, but since 90's floor heating is common. Energy comes by waterpipes or electric wires. And water can be warmed by electric, airpumps or burning wood, oil or wood pellets. Or hybrid system. Windows are at least 3x, usuallu filled with argon etc gas. Insulation is like wool, made glass, fabric, stone. Thickness is 15-40cm in walls, 40-60cm in roof. In floors insulate is different, like plastick foam, thickness 20-40cm.Ventilation when going out usualluy takes 80% of heat back to house. -15C is ok. You get use to it in few days, and maby even don't close your jacket. Just don't drink and pass out to woods alone. Remember, norten people live in - 40C, and it's nothing. Wellcome! 🇫🇮

Every car has two sets of wheels. So the tyres aren't changed, the wheels are swapped. As such, you're using tyres about the same as the UK (slightly more, as winter tyres wear quicker). Studded tyres are better for driving on more icy surfaces, traction tyres are better for snow and general winter surfaces. Studded tyres wear roads a lot. In Helsinki, the city council are trialling one city centre street where cars with studded tyres aren't allowed. This will be expanded if it is beneficial.

So lets say I only use 10kWh/month(with a basic price of 10 cents per kWh) then I pay around 60 cents per kWh, if I use 100 its about 24 cents, 1000 its 20.4 cents. This is why its really hard to figure out a price because we have people with different monthly costs and electricity prices don't include transfer plus tax plus their different monthly costs. So saying less than 18 cents is a lie and that might be at the cheapest ones, except the ones living in central heated areas able to not use electricity during winters and only using cheap electricity during summers might even get below 10 cents per kWh but I doubt anyone does that except at their summer cottage but even that fuse will have a high monthly fee.
