I’ve always loved the raspy conviction behind Plant’s voice when he sings, “Do you ever remember me, baby?!” He sounds like a male Janis Joplin, there.

This song is about an experience Robert had in his youth, before Led Zeppelin. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine (March 13, 1975) the interviewer, Cameron Crowe, asked Robert Plant what gambles he had taken. Plant replied: "Let me tell you a little story behind the song 'Ten Years Gone' on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, 'Right. It's me or your fans.' Not that I had fans, but I said, 'I can't stop, I've got to keep going.' She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports-car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you." Robert said a lot of focus and effort had been put into the song due to all of the guitar parts Jimmy wrote and had to assemble. He said they'd play anything for a change of pace and to keep loose and out of those in between jams is how Trampled Under Foot and Custard Pie came to be.

One thing that pops up in Zeppelin's music once in a while is their willingness to slow and even sometimes completely stop the flow of the music. This track has that and it works great. It somehow increases the impact of the music.

This song was originally intended to be an instrumental....before Robert's epic story was later added. Jimmy constructed most of the music for this song in his home studio and presented it to the band in it's nearly finished form.

and then the tapes were stolen...you've seen that video? Anywho, Jimmy Page, arguably, is the greatest ROCK composer in the rock era... there's many more who are also great, but hard to top all those epic PAGE compositions - COMPOSITONS, not songs. Difference? Well, early Beatles are great songs, later Beatles are closer to "compositions." PEACE, ALL.

I would say Pink Floyd would be the greatest band of all time. But Led Zeppelin and yes are probably tied for second. There are some others as well but being a baby boomer I'm growing up in the sixties and seventies I'd have seen it all of these bands live in concert I have a different perspective and most of the younger generation who are just discovering the wonderful Talent of these older bands

@@isopropyltoxicity then I guess you haven't heard some of their earlier music like ummagumma, a saucerful of Secrets or animals or dark side of the moon. Pink Floyd has over 50 albums and most people are not aware of them except for the wall and maybe one or two others. The earlier music with psychedelic Rock because they made their music for people who want to trip on LSD or mushrooms and smoke pot and the music was to get a different experience out of life

Zeppelin, like any '70's rock music, gets the "3 song" treatment on the radio, on spotify, etc., still to this day...their musical tapestry and textures are unparalleled...this track was a serious deep cut; you had to buy this album, and listen with intent, to even discover it, like many other Zeppelin deep-cut classics

Physical Graffiti came out when I was a junior in high school. Great music was coming out all the time during those years and my friends and I made sure to buy the new albums the moment they hit the stores. When we gathered in school the day after buying and listening to this record we seemed to be in stunned reverence. We could sense that it would last the test of time. Glad, as always, that you approve. (To put it mildly, lol!) That long, drawn-out "Ooooohhh..." of Robert's as the outro begins never fails to slay me. Sweet! Great Call, man! Sweet's Des. Blvd was SUCH an important "one of my first albums" for me. My two years older brother probably got it, but I recall wearing out the needle playing it on our living room record player jamming to "deep cuts" like Into the Night and A.C.D.C. and "I wanna be committed." I was in 4th or 5th grade. What fun! I read somewhere that in 1975 or so Zeppelin members were totally digging and dancing in public to Ballroom Blitz at some record label party!

Hey! Hello from a new subber. I subbed, watched a few of your reactions, then saw the “shorts” videos of you in a car. I thought, “Rut, row! Here we go! Please tell me he’s not going to drive and record videos.” I was pleased to see that you weren’t actually driving. Please don’t. I’m on the road a lot and see more People than not driving while distracted. People going down the highway at 80 mph texting, etc… People drive like crap enough without all the distractions. End of rant. I’m enjoying all the Zeppelin reactions here. Your enthusiasm for the rock music I grew up on is awesome. I see you’ve reacted to some Def Leppard, Van Halen and Rush, too. More of the great music from my yesteryears. I used to play drums in many local bands(northern Illinois) and played many of these bands’ tunes in clubs all around my area. Recorded an album of originals back in the mid 90’s with one of the bands I was in. The band fell apart not long after, due to internal strife, but I had a blast recording it. I have a suggestion for you. I looked through and didn’t find this tune in any vids you’ve reacted to, so, if you would, please, react to Rush’s epic 2112 off “All The World’s A Stage” album. It’s live and absolutely amazing! The album was released in ‘76 and blew our minds. Even if you’re not able to react to that particular version, any version of 2112 live would be great. Their studio version is off the charts, too. The whole song is around 16 minutes long(off All The World’s A Stage) and is in 7 parts. They are all meant to flow together, though, and do so nicely. Thanks for giving me some smiles and rockin’ out!

This song and Achilles Last Stand have been two of my favorites for for a few decades. I would suggest you dig into some of the deeper cuts into some of the other great bands from the 70's like Rush, Yes, Steely Dan, and Floyd. So many gems that never got radio play. The hard part is going through the large catalogues these bands produced but do it like we did in the old days and listen to albums instead of songs.
