This song is about an experience Robert had in his youth, before Led Zeppelin. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine (March 13, 1975) the interviewer, Cameron Crowe, asked Robert Plant what gambles he had taken. Plant replied: "Let me tell you a little story behind the song 'Ten Years Gone' on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, 'Right. It's me or your fans.' Not that I had fans, but I said, 'I can't stop, I've got to keep going.' She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports-car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you." Robert said a lot of focus and effort had been put into the song due to all of the guitar parts Jimmy wrote and had to assemble. He said they'd play anything for a change of pace and to keep loose and out of those in between jams is how Trampled Under Foot and Custard Pie came to be.

There are some others as well but being a baby boomer I'm growing up in the sixties and seventies I'd have seen it all of these bands live in concert I have a different perspective and most of the younger generation who are just discovering the wonderful Talent of these older bands

@@isopropyltoxicity then I guess you haven't heard some of their earlier music like ummagumma, a saucerful of Secrets or animals or dark side of the moon. Pink Floyd has over 50 albums and most people are not aware of them except for the wall and maybe one or two others. The earlier music with psychedelic Rock because they made their music for people who want to trip on LSD or mushrooms and smoke pot and the music was to get a different experience out of life

Anywho, Jimmy Page, arguably, is the greatest ROCK composer in the rock era... there's many more who are also great, but hard to top all those epic PAGE compositions - COMPOSITONS, not songs. Difference? Well, early Beatles are great songs, later Beatles are closer to "compositions." PEACE, ALL.
