Our war veterans are respected, because we know what they had to do to keep Finland independent. One can see that it's still emotional for them to talk about the war after 70 years.

My grandmother was in both wars, as were six of her siblings. She is alive still, 101 years old. She just got cards from random Finns in the spirit of gratefulness. There was a hand drawn card from a 6 year old, one from a 13 year old and few from older people around Finland. This was a campaign of some veteran organisations and our postal service delivered the cards in one envelope (to all veterans I think). Those really got me emotional and so thankful. 🇫🇮

I can’t watch this documentary without tears filling my eyes. Without our independence we have nothing no one could have said it better . I’m so grateful for our soldiers for their sacrifice 🇫🇮❤

My grandad spent his youth fighting in the front lines and was actually wounded. He was shot through his hip and had trouble walking for the rest of his life. I would not be here if he was left behind. Luckily he lived to see his 95 birthday.❤

Both my grandpas fought there.. One told me numerous stories from the war when I sat in his workshop as a kid.. The other one never said a word but suffered from terrible nightmares. I inherited our independence from them, but also along the knowledge of the horrors of the war, their grim determination.

All of us Finn's know those veterans. Or someone of them. Because they are our fathers, grandfathers and grand grandfathers. Because hole of Finland and every men and also many woman took a part of a winter war. We are so small country. So we all have kind of had to live our lives with those war traumas influencing our life. At least in some level. Healing has took many generations because everyone were in that war. But we are very proud of our veterans and we love them. And we would do that again if it's necessary. Hope it isn't tho.

It was globally unique that every deceased soldiers body was brought home, if humanly possible.

My grandfather fought in the war he had just turned 18 when he got drafted. He was such a gentle soul. I cant imagine the horrors he must have experienced. He never spoke about any of it. He took all hose memories to his grave.

Great video to react to, thank you. I've been thinking for a long time about doing some better subtitles for that, as the original feels bit rushed and is in my view, missing alot. Both grandad's were veterans that came home, I was a pallbearer and a artillery reservist.

Really wish you could get your hands on the newer version of Unknown Soldier. (2017 irrc?) Miniseries version is better, but the movie is great too. Might not be a reaction vid, since it is a full feature film, but it's still worth a watch. 👍🏻

The mini series version is in Netflix but I'm not sure what countries can watch it.

hearing these interviews again tears me up and it's also amusing to hear the use of certain words that the younger generation might not use in this context

Here's a video, on which the interviews are probably even more revealing and in depth. There are interviews from veterans-including Simo Häyhä-who fought on the Kollaa Front, which embodied and encapsulated the Spirit of Winter War. Some videos about the battle itself for introduction and then those interviews: "Finland's Spirit Never Fell Before Strongest Enemy : Battle of Kollaa", "Marokon Kauhu - The Terror of Morocco (Teaser 2)", "Aarne "Marokon kauhu" Juutilainen 19.12.1939 Kollaanjoella (English subtitles)", "kollaa and Simo Häyhä Museum part 1 kollaa kestää" and "Spirit of the winter war | Talvisodan henki | Karpolla on asiaa". Also, the veterans are sometimes referred as the Silent Men: "Pappa Kom Hem - The War Is Not Over- Documentary World War II in Finland". Couple of songs, which will be heard on this year's Finland's independence day too: ""Veteraanin iltahuuto" - Song of The Finnish Veterans" and ""Sillanpään marssilaulu" - Finnish Army Song".

My great grandfather died in one of the places mentioned here. I wonder if they knew him. My great grandmother, whom I remember, was left alone in a cottage with five children.
