Ambulance is different in every state. Here in Queensland it’s free. Everyone pays a small levy in their electricity bills.

Australian here (VIC). My brother was attacked and had to get an ambulance to the hospital (literally across the road, 300m away) and the bill was about $2k. Lucky that was waivered, as a victim of crime, it was free. But jeez! I took out ambulance cover that day, and pay $12 every 3 months 😂

The price of food is bad because we have two major supermarkets who are ripping off everyone and there’s nothing we can do, the government is currently investigating their practices and hopefully it will drop prices.

You should come to Oz 😊 You have the right attitude & sense of humour to fit in easily. The climate varies a lot across Australia because it's so huge. Northern regional cities like Townsville, Cairns & Darwin are hot and humid all year around. Brisbane has humid summers & mild winters (but the houses aren't built for the cold!) Sydney is similar but a bit cooler. Melbourne has 4 seasons each year & often 4 seasons in a day 😅 but I like it. Hobart is a bit colder than Melbourne. Temps in inland places like Ballarat and Canberra drop well below zero in winter. Never been so cold than when I lived in Canberra 🥶 Adelaide and Perth have hot, dry summers. Yep, the cost of living is higher over here, but so are the wages and the general standard of living. As for ambulance cover, it's usually included in private health insurance (which you'll need when you first come here because you're not a permanent resident). Otherwise you can take out a subscription with your state ambulance organisation. Doesn't cost much.

@@sprig5173 No, it's nothing about morals, it's just a fair system of user-pays. The tax doallrs funnel into the health segment of the budget. Diseases from alcohol and tobacco usage cost the health industry a huge amount, and drain the federal and state budgets, short-changing other areas of research and treatment. So it's only fair that people who are more likely to be drawing on the system pay more towards it.

We will have a couple of months winter where it gets bloody cold, and a couple in summer where it's bloody hot - but the rest of the year is spot on.

Australia is so large, we have quite a variety of weather. I was born and raised in Darwin, which has tropical weather, similar to Malaysia, hot and humid most of the year with monsoon rains. I am currenty in Perth, which is described as having a Mediterranean climate. It can get hot, >40° quite a few times in January and February this year. But its a dry heat, not too humid. And in winter, single didget temps at night and around 20° in the day.

Anywhere from Newcastle to Coffs Harbour and above. Within one hour or so can be around Gorges and Waterfalls from many of these coastal cities. You must of heard of Nimbin and Byron Bay, both of whom are in this area. A wee Scottish Lad must miss the Fog on a early morning. Stop havering and start savouring a Aussie paradise. The ambulance is free in Queensland. Weather depends on where you live. Southern states are seasonal, & the further north you go, it gets hotter. Here in the subtropics, the days are warm in the winter, with cold nights. Summers are very hot & humid! The chocolate is good too👌 Food is expensive but we have excellent markets (usually on the weekends depending where you live). The food quality is very good! Lived in both the US & UK, & Australia leaves them for dead!

Born and bred Aussie and have travelled internationally heaps. Of course, it's further than living in Europe to travel to another country but we also have access to countries Europeans have to travel further for, e.g. Asia/Pacific region, and as a people we are used to the distance and do not let it deter us as generally most love to travel far and wide as that's how we do it in our own country anyway due to it's size. In other words, for us, what's new, we're used to distance being a factor in our travels.

Weather is very location specific in Aus because it’s such a big continent. Inland can be very unvarying. North can be humid year round. Everywhere but Tasmania can get scorching hot in the summer, but at least you can get cool changes, or winters, in Sydney and Melbourne. Perth can have nice Mediterranean weather: really hot, but regular cool changes. GP availability can be very location dependent, some areas are more slammed than others. Ambulances we don’t think about much because the yearly insurance is super cheap, and if you have private insurance, it’s covered in that. Other states it’s free.

My son moved from Sydney to London for 5 years in 2015, and he said the cost of living was so much greater in London than in Sydney. Rent, food, public transport, entertainment, the lot. For example, I was shocked to see a UK KZbinr say recently that a cup of takeaway coffee in the UK currently costs well over 4 pounds, more than double the price in Australia (in Australia, around AUD 4.50 ). Even though my son had a well-paid, full time job in the UK, he said that saving money was quite hard. In Sydney my son had lived in a trendy inner-city suburb close to work, and he was used to eating out and going out a lot. But in London, he and his flatmates were living in a noisy industrial suburb a way out from the city, staying home more and cooking their meals and lunches, to cut costs. Even though he was still working in the same industry in both cities. From the point of view of quality of life, that all improved once he returned to working in Australia.

If you are a home owner you get charged a little bit extra in your land rates our electricity bills to cover ambulance fees or fire brigade so if you log a call out for something it is free. Note: Hubby and I travelled from Qld to Vict, hubby had a heart attack and had an intensive ambulance plus a normal ambulance, 2 in total, took him to a hospital, he was there for 2 weeks. bWe got a bill for nearly $2000 and we sent it to Qld ambulance and they paid for it. Aussies may complain but our health system is quite good.

I lived in London for a year and was extremely excited by how close I was to so many countries and how cheap the fares were. However the reality was that those trips never happened. Working 5 days per week and having the usual weekend chores, visiting friends, catching up at the pub etc meant that those cheap weekends away didn't happen. Also, any money I was making went on the incredibly expensive rent (for a room) and on saving to be able to backpack in Europe instead. I suppose if I weren't planning on my backpacking trip I could have, and would have, done the weekend visits to different countries that were so close, but it really was one or the other. At the time, the exchange rate was horrible so whatever I landed in London with was worth less than half once converted to pounds. Once I began working the pay rate was better than what I was getting in Australia, but that was more to do with the fact that I came from a country town to a city rather than it being from one country to another. I was very tempted to move to Sydney on my return so that I could earn more, but after a year living and working in a city, it was confirmed for me that I wasn't a city girl, lol.

i live in perth, western australia and learnt the hard way about ambulances here. the only ambulance service state-wide here is "st john ambulance" which is privately-owned but has a contract with all of the government-run and private hospitals. the costs are about $1100 for an ambulance which is for "emergency or urgent priority." non-urgent (ie need to go to hospital but not under lights/sirens and not extremely ill will cost about $600. this is in the perth metro area - in regional areas i believe it can cost even more and they sometimes add an additional cost per kilometer. ambulances also transfer some patients from hospital to hospital (ie go from one ER to another specialist hospital that might be for their burns unit or some other specialty) and this also costs $400-$600. they will also charge you the same rate ($1100 or $600) depending on the urgency the 000 operator classifies your call to provide "on-site treatment." if they go to your house and still dont go to hospital, they will charge you. it is a "user-pays" system - and even if someone else calls an ambulance for you, you will be charged for it - regardless of if you wanted or not and you would have to fight it out with their billing department. i had kidney stones and called an ambulance cause i couldnt move and was shocked to get a bill afterwards for $1100 or so. all of that being said - you can get "premium ambulance insurance" here for about $60 a year for an individual which covers all urgent and non-urgent trips to hospital via ambulance. as someone else said - it's a no-brainer. some people who have private health insurance will have ambulance cover included - but usually for only life-threatening / emergency calls. there are discounts / concessions - anyone 65 or older and who has a "pension card" receives free ambulances for the remainder of their life - which is reassuring for elderly pepople. there also other options for people who are on "financial hardship" or government benefits due to low income. end rant.

It's interesting you asked about cost of living/saving money between the two countries; In my experience with rent, food, utilities and everyday stuff it's swings and roundabouts depending on where you live (I lived in different places in the UK a long time ago, but keep in touch with family/friends) but where the big difference was for me was recreation and leisure.... the next point raised in the video. Much of the UK's leisure activity seems to be focused indoors and costs money, while in Australia (thanks largely to the weather, but also the culture) there just seems to a lot more free stuff happening in cities and towns, in the outdoors and of course, the beaches. The national parks are spectacular in Australia too. The UK has some lovely walks and drives, but it's on an entirely different scale.

Nice weather. Minus: Crappy NHS compared to back home. It's not like 24hrs in A&E on TV; Expensive public transport; expensive food; employment law in the dark ages; Snobs and prejudice against Australians; Class system alive and well; Rural economy on life support; Lower wages than back home.

In Australia, alcohol and tobacco products are taxed heavily. They bring in regular revenue for the Federal budget and they discourage drinkers and smokers from high consumption. Also State traffic fines for speeding are high and double over public holidays and long weekends. Since everyone pays towards the overall cost of Medicare, the taxes offset the costs for illnesses related to alcohol & tobacco. The State traffic fines are for State revenue and to deter bad driving that results in accidents that State Governments have to deal with in hospital beds, extra nurses, etc. So they are kind of ‘user pays’ pricing methods.

Was in hols in Adelaide and needed emergency ambulance. When I got home I received a notification of the ambo cost that the govt paid. They're very low paid if hey only pay 20% tax. You pay 0% on your first 18K, then between 18K and 45K you pay 19%, anything you earn over 45K is taxed at 32% up to 120K. Above that you pay 37% and for anything above 180K it's 45%. Then there's a few extras (Medicare levy adds 2% for most people)......I guess it's good that it's a sliding scale, 20% tax suggests between them they're earning about 100K (which in the current climate could be quite tight). Ambulances are complicated - different in different states (and I *think* generally covered by even the most basic health insurance - but could be wrong). The transport comes down to population size and distribution. It might seem counter-intuitive that lower population means cheaper long-distance trains, but ultimately there's a smaller demand.... Fruit and veg is local and seasonal - and shipped in from farms that could be 100s of km away that add transport cost. Non-seasonal stuff is problematic because you either need storage solutions (using carbon to ripen on demand), or you ship it from overseas - which you can imagine is difficult. If you can't handle issues with beer sizes, steer clear of SA..... "schooner" in SA is a "half-pint" (285mL), what they call a "pint" (425mL) is what the rest of the country calls a "schooner" - and if you're lucky you'll find a spot selling an "imperial pint" (ie a pint).

I have only ever lived in WA, specifically the south west region and perth so I can only speak to that, but yes, for a few months around christmas especially it gets unbearably hot, we had multiple week long stretches of 44c+ and a bit further north around canarvon it got over 50c. That being said autumn/spring are beautiful, just 20-30c max and sunny every day with very low humidity, I believe nsw is somewhat similar but queensland is very humid similar to what you would be experiencing in malaysia. The peak of winter is maybe 10c minimum or just above 0c in the middle of the night so its not cold at all compared to what you get in the UK. With the ambulance thing if you dont have any private coverage you are kind of screwed but most basic plans cover free ambulance trips for less than $10 aud a fortnight.\ Also while travelling to europe/americas etc is very very expensive from here, getting to south east asia, especially indonesia costs peanuts especially from Perth. I can get a return flight to bali for instance for $80 while a similar flight to sydney would cost a few hundred $$ at least and take twice as long.

Ambulance is free unless it’s non emergency ambulance. What is non emergency ambulance? If you or someone you know is sick but it is not a life-threatening emergency and you do not require immediate medical attention. You can call ambulance for a fee but in most cases it’s recommended to call your GP first.

As for fruit goes Australia can grow most fruit and vegetables all year round, but you must remember in winter or summer the fruit and veg travel from on end to the other! As for beer a pint 568mls a schooner is 425mls, so basically a 1/2 a cup difference!

Wages are higher in Australia, for the same job in the UK. But Sydney and Melbourne do have London realestate prices, but once you move out of those cities the prices drop. As for weather, it does get hot and humid especially the further north you go!

My mother told me when I turned 18, and that was a long time ago, get ambulance insurance. Cost today it is under $50 a year in New South Wales for emergency only and a bit over $50 to be covered for non emergency transport. Air ambulances included. Ambulance insurance is part of private health insurance policies. Ambulances are free for those on pensions, motor accident victims and some other exemptions. Not sure what it is in other states but I expect something similar. Regarding GP visits, we need to book two months in advance to see our GP. He is very popular and not unique. The best GPs are in high demand. He is in a practice with a dozen other doctors and an emergency consultation with one of them is available the same day or next. The practice also has a nurse practitioner who is able to prescribe some medications and order X-rays and some pathology tests. She is pretty much available on demand for minor ailments. There are medical practices where you can walk in and see someone. These are mostly staffed by doctors from third world countries with limited experience of the Australian medical system and too often struggling with English. Encountered one such doctor who lapsed into Bengali mid sentence. That is a recipe for a medical blunder.

Ambulance costs vary depending on the state, they are free in QLD. International travel is not that expensive (and can even be cheaper than domestic travel), I even flew to Finland from Brisbane earlier this year. The real issue is travel time, it was over 30 hours with layovers to get to Finland, so if you go outside Asia or Oceania you want to go for a bit longer (2 weeks+) or it feels like you spent half your time travelling. Brisbane might be worth considering, summers are very similar to the weather in Malaysia, winters are cool but not that cold, Brisbane has a good sized Malaysian and Indonesian community if your wife is worried about that, but you will find the same in Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin (I don't know enough about the other cities to comment) Brisbane is more affordable than Sydney and Melbourne as well, and it's an easy 1 hr drive to both the Gold and Sunshine coasts. Maybe I'm biased but I grew up in Sydney and choose to move to Brisbane I feel it is a better place for raising a family it's more family friendly with so many public parks and beaches and less crowds.

$750 for a ambulance visit in NSW , The weather here can change from one extreme to the next ( depends what state ) we get snow and ice in winter and anything up to 50 degrees celcius in summer . I know people from England here and they hate the summer our temps in spring are hotter than the hottest day you would get in England ( i dont like summer either ) too hot can't do much outside for too long or you will looked like a cooked crab , We are still in Autumn and its currently 7 degrees where i am on the east coast of NSW .

A schooner works in a hot climate - enough time to drink before it warms up. Personally, I don’t mind pints (as a big animal you need to keep it fed and watered) but schooners (375ml) seems to be a happy compromise.

(once a year, I took out ambulance cover for the rest of that year and it was pretty cheap).

With cost of living I think it depends on so many things including what your income will be, whether there are two incomes, if child care is needed, and what kind of lifestyle you want. If you expect to eat out a lot or drink very regularly that will definitely up your cost of living too. Beer and spirits are expensive but you can find good wine at reasonable prices. Eating seasonally may take some time to get used to but you can definitely eat healthy seasonal food all year. Lots of quality Asian food here too. Weather varies depending on where you live so that is worth exploring before settling on a location. It is best to come as permanent residents rather than temporary visa holders as you are entitled to more benefits from your arrival, especially if you have children. Depending on what your occupations are will determine your choice of jobs and locations of most jobs for your field. Another important factor to consider when settling* on a location. If you tell us what your occupations are we could provide more information about this. Some occupations are in demand almost everywhere whilst others will be mostly in larger population centres. Also, do you like living in a big city or a smaller city or even a regional town? Another factor which will have a large impact on your living costs is whether you need to rent or have a substantial mortgage. If you have a smaller sized mortgage, then your living expenses will be less than if you have a large mortgage or if you rent. There are so many factors specific to each individual that you need to consider for your own family.
