The best Marillion songs grow on you and mature in your mind like a fine wine and stay with you forever. Stick on your headphones and let the subtle textures in this song wash over you like the waves crashing on the beach of your hopes, aspirations and broken dreams.

I once had this song on while sitting in the dark with headphones on. I was laying over the arms of a big leather chair. I had to lift my legs up and tuck my feet in because I felt like I was in the boat

Sorry about your lack of inspiration for express your feelings about this. For me it's one of their most beautiful song they ever produced. Epic, tragic, powerful and delicate, the change of moods express calm of the sera then storm, then calm again... A masterpiece !

Lost for words? Don't worry, so are the rest of us. The fact is, you've already covered it. What you can say about one Marillion song, you can say about all of them: great soulful vocals, great virtuoso musicianship, thought-provoking themes, original compositions, majestic arrangements. When all is said and done, only one question really matters: did you like the music?

Is there any better piece of music to recreate the calm before the storm before the calm before the storm etc. at sea ?
@coffeemanandy19662 жыл бұрын
It's a wonderfully complex song, constantly changing tempo from calm to stormy and as you say "sharp", but to me that just adds to the story of the angry sea - you should read Don Allens diary that steve hogarth refers to in this clip ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXe3nZl8d9x1nJo ) - it is an incredible tale of sheer determination to never give up. (and stop apologising!)

It's a tragic story, he achieved a dream that was also the cause of his death. At least he achieved something great and got his name in the history books which is more than 99% of us achieve I guess.

IMO this one takes several listens to appreciate - its varied sections may seem jumbled at first.

The song depicts the story of Don Allum, starting out with his gym teacher insulting him brutally in front of the whole class when he was a school boy, which, it is implied, set him off on a lifelong quest to prove himself physically tougher than just about every man on the planet. Where does "true peace" come from? For Allum it came from facing pain, prolonged suffering, and extreme storms at sea in a small rowboat, proving that gym teacher wrong forever. It's an odd juxtaposition of feelings, achieving inner peace through pain and suffering, and the song has many moods written into it to reflect Allum's feelings during his journeys. A young person like yourself is still chasing dreams, and being forced into choices as the years go by which make some of those dreams possible, yet, at the same time, as forks in the road are pondered, and choices made, some of those dreams become impossible. An old man like myself has few dreams left, maybe just the one where I go through a day free of orthopedic pain with every move. Dreams get replaced by regrets at paths not taken. Don Allum chose a road (shipping lane?), achieved his only dream, and died fairly young as a result of it. I wonder if he had any regrets, and I hope his remains are buried on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Have you ever captained a rowboat? The rhythm at the beginning of Ocean Cloud perfectly portrays the pace of a strong rowing motion, the placement of the oars in the water, the pulling of them against the resistance offered by the liquid, the lifting of them into the air, and the swinging of them behind you for the next stroke, and then the next, and the next, and the next, and the next. How many strokes did it take to cross an entire ocean? The entire song is a wonderful aural poem paying tribute to Allum being one with the many different rhythms of the sea to the point where you actually begin to accept that what he did was something other than the totally pointless and suicidal act of a certifiable lunatic. We have planes that fly over oceans, and ocean liners that cruise through them effortlessly. What in the world is the point in trying to row a small boat across them? "Out of this World" is another h composition about human obsession and its consequences.

There is always the discussion, 'is it really live if you add samples and recordings to a show'! Falling in reverse stood criticism bc they cancelled a show due to their laptops were lost. If you want to be a purist use no keyboard or electric guitar, where is your line?
