It's not criticising the EU, he's just saying he stays here until he dies, he's a smalltown boy who can travel across Europe without a passport or much money if he wants to. This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.

He was an orphan at a young age. His father taught him that this world is his oyster, without borders. So he travels to many countries to escape the pain of the loss of his parents, but that doesn't work. No escargots, fish 'n chips, paella can make him forget. 2. Seen all kinds of reactions what the song is about. In Ducht we say Europa. But it's about his dad, we say papa in Dutch to our dads. I saw the interview Joost gave when the song was released. It's a letter to his dad, who taught him human made boundaries, but there are no bounderies. The song is actually a bit sad. As others already stated, he lost his parents at a very young age. There are a lot of double meanings / connections to his parents and surely i am missing something but ill try to name some: Like the song is called "euro-papa" because papa is dad in dutch. He is singing that he goes to other places but he feels lonely. He lost everything except time. he is struggeling He is giving people money but nobody is helping him. He went to mental healthcare but they could not help him. He is talking about the song Papaoutai from stromae. Papa outai means "dad is here" and the phrase Où t'es? Papa où t'es? means Where are you? Dad where are you? check out the lyrics of that song too :) He is also mentioning "i wont stop until they say, yes he does that very well" because he is seeking pride from his parents. The ending is pretty clear but i think he is talking to his dad and his younger him and he tells his dad that he listend to him. Also the burning picture and burning house stands for him closing that chapter and he wants to move on and dont want to feel the pain anymore. while he was in therapy they used burning stuff to let go the old

😊 For people who don’t speak Dutch this song is really hard to understand, but he travels in the song across Europe, because his father told him there are NO borders anymore. ( it’s not a joke, this song is real deep ). And another funny thing about the clip, almost every person in the clip is a famous artist in the Netherlands. Paul Elstak, Stien, Donny, René Froger, and many more.

You have got it wrong, it is not political in any way. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was a teenager +/- 13 years old, and his mother died from a heart attack a year later. I’ve seen a few videos that jump to ‘criticism on EU leadership’. I wonder if that’s projecting. Are those reactors from countries that view the EU differently? Casi todos los idiomas son bonitos. A mi me gusta que en eurovisión canten en su propio idioma. La canción engancha y tiene una letra muy triste. Es un contraste con el buen rollo de la música.
