This performance never seizes to amaze me. If you want to hear Mitch doing crazy high notes and being his flawless self, I suggest you react to either "Gold", and "Aha, live in Singapore". Gold is a Kiiara cover and the original is very heavily edited and tuned. PTX does it live and like nobody's business. Aha live is recorded with a phone, but really good quality. Mitch takes the cake there too!

Best acapella group on the planet + the best movie franchise in the universe. They didn't need the orchestra but it added the big element to the moment. Hallelujah, Imagine, Rather Be, Shallow and you can't go wrong with any of their Christmas songs
@curvytangerine3 жыл бұрын
I don't mean this in an aggressive way, but: I don't really understand why there are always so many comments saying "they didn't need the orchestra but..." I mean I guess it's better than going all the way and saying you're disappointed in the performance because the orchestra was there (which many other fans and also the media did). but it's still... not understanding the point of the performance at all, don't you think? obviously PTX doesn't _need_ an orchestra or band. everyone knows that. that's why they were given half of the performance to themselves. on the other hand, the orchestra was not an "added element"; the whole segment was about Star Wars, not about PTX, and the full orchestral sound of the score is a massively famous, instantly recognizable trademark of the films. PTX and the John Williams Orchestra were two equally important elements that were brought together: one to represent the franchise's classic, timeless sound and another to give that sound a beautiful contemporary interpretation. sorry for the ramble 😅 I just saw the same wording like four times in this comment section and you were the next one I landed on, so... congrats, lucky winner! haha.
@susanb42134 жыл бұрын
At the time this performance happened, PTX got some public flak for performing with an orchestra. TMZ even cornered Scott at the airport and asked him about it. He said "what, we were going to turn down an opportunity to perform at the AMAs with the John Williams Orchestra? We were invited and of course we accepted. It wasn't our place to dictate terms." Not verbatim, but that was the gist. I also remember at the time there were the usual "Best of the AMAs" and "Worst of AMAs" and this performance made both lists, depending on the medial outlet. I thought they were wonderful, particularly in the acapella part. They also performed at the Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks. They sang a song from one of his films "That Thing You Do," again at first acapella , and then with a little combo. You can see Hanks' wife Rita lean over and say "That's Pentatonix!" when they were introduced-leading me to believe she had been talking about them to him before and now he got to put faces to the name.
@envyrem4 жыл бұрын
The two main complaints I saw about this performance was that the orchestra was overpowering them, or they weren't doing legit a capella. Scott basically told TMZ that it didn't matter, because it wasn't about their ego, it was about honoring the franchise. Although I already had respect for the group, that made it go through the roof.

Yes, it's clear he was reading what had been written down for him (which, I realize, is always the case in such situations, but it's not always made that evident). My list of top ten Pentatonix songs every reactor should do (some you've already done): 1. "Hallelujah" (with Avi as bass) 2. "The Sound of Silence" (with Matt as bass) Great songs, great arrangements, all four vocalists have solos that showcase them 3. "Daft Punk" 4. "Bohemian Rhapsody" 5. "Imagine" - beautiful arrangement with a strong message for these times 6. "Evolution of Ariana Grande" (or any other of their *Evolution* videos) - these are medleys on steroid, *recorded live in the studio* in one continuous take, incredible transitions for 20+ songs in 6-7 minutes 7. "Can't Sleep Love" (Popspring concert version) - a taste of their *original music* 8. "Aha" (Star Vista Singapore version) - an iconic concert performance. The combination of Mitch's highs and Avi's lows are phenomenal in this one. 9. "Say Something" - a powerfully emotional rendition that showcases *Kirstin* as the lead. She usually sings harmonies or shares the lead with Scott and/or Mitch 10. "New Rules x Are You That Somebody" - they are excellent at *mash-ups* and this is their best yet, with great beatboxing and bass line, a good introduction for Matt

I wish I could find the interview where they talk about it, but as they were about to start their performance, and as Harrison Ford was introducing them, Avi got a mis-cue and started walking out on stage...alone. Kirstie said she was going to follow him, but that J-Lo was back there and motioned No to her. Kristine thought J-Lo was just waving hello. Avi quickly zipped back, mortified that he'd just done that in front of an audience of celebrities and idols. He rightfully blamed he stage manager for not exercising better control, lol.

I'll never understand why certain fans and media outlets thought this was some kind of outrage because of the orchestra's presence. this was such a stunning performance. PTX's audio was balanced _really_ well with the orchestra imo; as you pointed out, you could even still hear Kevin's beatboxing, which, along with the bass, is the hardest audio to balance. and Avi came through perfectly clearly as well. frankly whoever was the sound tech for that stage did a mindblowing job, and more people should have been paying attention to _that._ you really pointed out all the amazing things about the way this medley sounded, though, which was satisfying to me because it showed you were listening super closely. I love how enthusiastic you were about it and I love how it brought out your adoration for the franchise. in my opinion, if a diehard Star Wars fan loves it that much, the performance has been 100% successful.

Off subject (sort of): Anna Kendrick is a PTX fan too & appears in 1 of their videos. For their original song Sing, they released the song, then announced to fans that they wanted videos of fans lip syncing/singing the song, & clips would be used from them as part of the upcoming official video. Anna is one of the celebrities that sent in a video, but you have to know it's her cause you don't see her face well & it's quite fast. She's in a teddy bear onsie in a kitchen, eating cereal & singing while a friend dances behind her singing. 😂 [PTX also then later announced to everyone a day, time & place to just show up where they would be filming if you wanted to join them for a group shoot, so that's another part of the video.]

I've recently been fascinated with reaction videos for Pentatonix as they're my favorite group. Yours is the only one I've subscribed to. I really enjoy your treatment of the videos, and could not agree more with you about how amazing this group is. One thing I would like to hear from you a bit more is a breakdown of your thoughts on the musicality of the work. You talk about harmonies a bit, but I really dig the way they ping-pong their voices off each other (the Daft Punk medley demonstrates this beautifully) , and I'd love to hear you talk more about those vocal interactions. Great job!!

The group has pretty good range in general - Kevin and Kirstie can both go as high as Mitch goes in songs, but they have different tones when going up there. I'm not sure why they always turn to Mitch to go high - it might be that they like his tone best up there, or that he's more consistent going high live? Scott can also get really high, not as high as the other three, but he can also go much lower. I think he probably has the widest usable singing range in the group lol I'll recommend "Imagine" for Kevin high notes, "Say Something" for Kirstie (not particularly high, but I love her tone in it), and "Problem" for Scott.
