You really need to experience this song live, watching Freddie's intense expression as you do so. He performed it first (before it was fully recorded) at the free concert in Hyde Park in September 1976 in front of a crowd of 150,000. (That was the image at the beginning of the video.) Just him and his piano - no harmonies - although all the harmonies you hear here are Freddie multi-layering his own voice, harmonising with himself.

This version of this song is beautiful but it hits so much different watching Freddie do this live . You should watch Freddie do this live at Hyde Park. The expression on his face and the way he brings the song across is just as striking and beautiful as the song itself. He wrote this song for someone very special to him and you can see it on his face and hear it in his voice. I don’t know who convinced you to listen to the lyric video but with Queen and especially Freddie it is always better to watch live. The studio versions are great but live they are next level. You should really watch this again live at Hyde Park, it really does hit different.

The slide show at the beginning with the huge crowd was the stage where this was first played live, BEFORE the studio recording. Perfection in the studio with Freddie doing all the layered vocals...but LIVE the intensity and passion brought the rowdy crowd to near silence. Now you know what you have to do...after you feel better of course.

Queen in the studio and Queen live are two different animals. I began listening about 1974, when I was 12. By the time I reached my peak admiration, I had absorbed their studio mastery, also… there was no live to be heard. When Queen Live Killers dropped in 1979 it was a letdown. We were like…’who cares and who needs it’, they were inferior versions of pure studio eloquence. Queen were STUDIO PERFECTION…more than any other band at the time. They were craftsmen, they loved the studio! Even when I saw them live in 1980, it was something vastly different than the “headphone experience”. Later, in the KZbin era, ‘Somebody to Love’ live at Montreal finally delivered the alternative, amazingly electric Queen experience. Ballads VS rockers? ….No! Effective or not effective is a better metric. Queen were decidedly diverse and excelled in many genres. That was their value.

You’re required to stop video a few times, but with this one, that’s working against you. This song’s magic is creating a mood, which is broken by the interruptions. It will grow on you with several listens. It’s intense. It’s highly emotional, but it only makes sense played start to finish. And it might bring chills on the day you truly “ get it”. Keep doing Queen, you guys are a lot of fun. The Innuendo album is loaded with amazing songs, but careful coach, they make shake your emotions a little. Cheers.

Hi Mr and Mrs Coach, I don’t really care for this version and I understand Coach is not a ballad person, but I would ask you to listen to this song live from Hyde Park. It’s short, and it’s just Freddie and the piano. I’m hoping that you will at least appreciate Freddie’s live piano playing and vocals. The emotion that oozes out of him is unbelievable. It’s seems that he was singing this song to someone and I believe they were in the audience.

Hey Culligan Man! (Sorry. Your Calgon reference made me 8 years old again.) Hi folks! I hesitated before I stopped. Your drumbeat about hating ballads is borderline repellant, but hey, it's Monday, why not go all in? I don't know how to change your opinion, Coach, but as far as Queen is concerned, it helps a BUNCH if one hears it with the heart of a 12 year old girl. I'm nowhere near 12 anymore, but it stays just as it was all those years ago. Sadly, it isn't always like that. They do have a few songs that have tarnished over the decades (and one really terrible album) but on these ballads one can really get a handle on just how talented Freddie was. Mrs. Coach, you've got your cap on straight. Trying those heavier bands-even giving them a chance-puts you in the lucky stead of having a universe full of wonderfulness to discover. Coach, thanks for giving it a shot. Love you guys!

As much as I love 70s Queen, this is not one of my favorites… Might be interesting for you to know that this is from their fifth album A day at the races… With each album, they got more and more involved with layers and layers, and multiple vocals and overdubs and studio production… Which peaked with this album… The following album News of the world they did a 180 and simplified, changing their direction significantly. That album had We will rock you and we are the champions, etc.
