Two things. First, when I saw this video the first time, my brain said "Rock Pundits: "You can't sing along to an instrumental!" - Rush Fans In Rio: "Hold our Cerveza!". Second: If you want a Neil Peart drum solo, you need to see his solo from the Frankfurt concert called "Der Trommler". It's a masterclass in percussion from the master!

YYZ is the 3 letter airport code for Toronto. Whenever they flew home to Toronto after a long tour there was relief, joy, jubilation to be home, etc. So they took the morse code for "YYZ" and made that the opening riff of the song. its freaking morse code for "YYZ".

I suggest checking out the Exit Stage Left recording of this, where that third drum fill leads into an extended solo. Just a little 411 on this: YYZ is the official code for Toronto's Pearson International Airport; Neil's opening pattern is YYZ in Morse Code, which is what they heard in the cockpit as Alex, a licensed pilot, was flying them home for the weekend from Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, where they were recording Moving Pictures; on subsequent tours, whenever they saw YYZ on their luggage tags, they'd know that they were heading home to their families. For another amazing highlight from this show, I recommend 2112. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Rush were always a phenomenal band, live. But by this period of their career, when many bands begin to fade, they were an absolute force of nature on stage. The capabilities that only come from a lifetime of honing one's craft came to the perfect boil in their later years.

This was from the DVD Rush in Rio...2003. It is the entire show and it's got a bunch of great clips of the band before and after the show, signing autographs and getting off the plane and driving to the gig etc...60,000 fans at this outside show in Rio. The most ironic thing about this is they didn't even know they were big in Brazil and then their PR people let them know that their song "Closer to the Heart" was like one of the all-time most played songs in Brazilian radio history and they found out they had a huge following there, so they set it up and made the trip ( only time they ever played in Brazil and the fan support was out of this world)..tickets were hard to get. You should see the scene when they open the gates from the people who have been waiting hours to get up close to the front. It's 30 songs live with an intermission in the middle it just shows the whole concert. Just buy the DVD... Rush in Rio

It was like this even at a smaller venue, and I just HAD to go a second time after I learned more Rush music. Ear candy galore! This is exactly how it is at their concerts. Rush fans are one of a kind. This was during the Vapor Trials tour. This was they comeback 5 years after Test for Echo. You have to watch the documentary The Boys in Brazil and the concert was filmed. This was their first time in Brazil. They were very popular. there. The weather was horrible when they got there. They were not able to have sound checks or practice. This is what makes even more incredible. Think about having a livestream listening to this live concert or video of the concert.

I can't help but notice ~ I don't see anything from Billy Joel's catalog...in YOUR catalog! This must be rectified! May I humbly suggest "Piano Man"? A bit of backstory to entice you; the song is autobiographical. Early in his career, Billy was stuck with a bad management contract, which gave his manager a cut of everything he wrote, performed, everything. So Billy (being a New Yorker) decided he didn't like getting screwed, and went underground on the opposite coast, to wait out the last couple of years of the agreement. He wasn't making much as a lounge pianist, but at least he was getting all of it! He wrote Piano Man based on his own experiences during this time. I wish I could find a link to a good live version (he was a little pitchy at Shea in '08) because for the final chorus, Billy and the band go silent, and the crowd sings their song back to them. Imagine performing with Billy Joel, with 20,000 of your closest friends. It's a pretty cool moment. As an alternative, give a listen to "The Entertainer". It's about the music biz, and Billy pulls NO punches! 😄

Yes it’s a harder style. 2112 is harder and more wild kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4HFoJp6btqqfLc YYZ is the only song from this concert that Rush fans will want you to react to. Our quintessential Rush fan typically enjoys the 90s style of rush, that mirrors bands like Duran Duran, Thompson twins, etc. it’s really sad. Every song that Rush performed at this Rio concert was among the best version of those songs ever played, mostly because of the instruments, and the crowd. 2112 is even better than YYZ from this concert. Rush fans can’t handle it.
