The tragic thing Dave? Franz Ferdinand was the most progressive austrian official of all, and in a couple of years he would've ascended to the throne of Austria-Hungary and deeply reformed the empire. He knew the State wouldn't survive the years to come without reforms, and his ascension probably would've avoided WWI alltogether or, if not, postponed it for some years. He was killed by the very same kin he meant to favour once become emperor, the irony of fate...

Should be mentioned that there were extremely high tension between Germany & France before the war, even if Sarajevo didn't happen it's very likely a Franco-German war would've broken out anyway. Considering Austria/Hungary & Russia were allied with Germany & France they'd have gotten dragged in anyway. And if Germany would've gone through Belgium this time aswell then Brittain would've probably gotten brought in one again.

The name of the assasin was Gavrilo Princip. He was part of the first assasination attempt earlier that day where they used some explosive or grenade but they failed. Later that day he was still walking the streets of the city when the car with Franz Ferdinand and his wife passed him, he didn´t shoot then, but the driver made a wrong turn and he started to go back and when the car was 1-1,5 meters away from him he shot two shots. He was caught and later died in prison in 28th of april 1918.

He died in prison at the fortress of Theresienstadt (Of TB, if I recall correctly.) ... That fortress was later made into a KZ-camp ... And not just ANY, old KZ-camp. No this was the propaganda camp of the Third Reich. Here Red Cross officials was shown how "good" the prisoners was treated. It WAS better than i.e. Auschwitz and other camps, but it was still an KZ-camp.

It’s crazy how two shots from one person against another started a whole catastrophic war that is worldwide. Like the song itself says, nothing like what has come or ever seen before, a literal world war with tens of millions upon millions of dead and really destructive being more horrible than ever. There is a reason why there is saying ”when WW1 started everyone cheered, but when WW2 started everyone cried” Because they realized after WW1 how horrible modern warfare is

Dave Dave Dave... You're spoiling us with Sabaton reactions! This is a great opener for the album for those who are not that much into history or who just discovered Sabaton. I believe the narrator for Sabaton is Bethan Dixon Bate. Upon learning of Ferdinand’s upcoming visit, the Young Bosnians, a secret revolutionary society of peasant students, began plotting to assassinate him. In May, Gavrilo Princip, Trifko Grabez and Nedeljko Cabrinovic traveled to the Serbian capital of Belgrade, where they received six handheld bombs, four semi-automatic pistols and cyanide suicide capsules from members of the so-called Black Hand, a terrorist group with close ties to the Serbian army. After practicing with their pistols in a Belgrade park, the three men journeyed back to Bosnia-Herzegovina, receiving help from Black Hand associates to smuggle their weapons across the border. To this day, it remains unclear whether the Serbian government participated in the scheme. Ferdinand and Sophie departed their estate for Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 23. Having received multiple warnings to cancel the trip, the archduke knew that danger potentially awaited them. “Our journey starts with an extremely promising omen,” he purportedly said when the axles on his car overheated. “Here our car burns, and down there they will throw bombs at us.” After arriving at a spa town a few miles outside of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina’s capital, Ferdinand attended two days of military exercises while Sophie visited schools and orphanages. On a whim, the couple drove in one evening to check out Sarajevo’s bazaars. While there, they attracted a crowd of onlookers, including Princip, but were apparently treated with warmth and politeness. Following a banquet with religious and political leaders, only one day of events remained before Ferdinand and Sophie were to return home. That morning, June 28, the archduke sent a telegram to his eldest son congratulating him on his latest exam results. He and Sophie then boarded a train for the short ride into Sarajevo. For once, Sophie was permitted to walk alongside Ferdinand during a brief troop inspection, after which the couple got in an open-topped car for a motorcade ride to city hall. The car in front of them was supposed to carry six specially trained officers but instead had only one, plus three local policemen. In fact, throughout the trip, Austro-Hungarian officials allegedly focused more attention on dinner menus than security details. Meanwhile, seven Young Bosnians had fanned out along the Appel Quay, a main avenue in Sarajevo running parallel to the Miljacka River. When the motorcade passed by, its route having been published in advance, Cabrinovic asked which car carried the archduke. He then hurled his bomb at the car, only to watch it bounce off the folded-up roof and roll underneath the wrong vehicle. The subsequent explosion wounded two army officers and several bystanders but left Ferdinand and Sophie essentially unharmed. Cabrinovic jumped into the mostly dry riverbed and made a half-hearted attempt to kill himself before being apprehended. “I am a Serbian hero,” he purportedly shouted as the police led him away. At least two other Young Bosnians also had good looks at the archduke but apparently lost the nerve to attempt an assassination. Rather than immediately flee Sarajevo, Ferdinand decided to continue on to the planned event at city hall. Upon finishing that up, he insisted on visiting the wounded officers in the hospital. In order to dissuade any other bomb throwers, the motorcade zipped down the Appel Quay at high speeds. By mistake, however, the first three cars turned onto a side street right where Princip happened to be standing. As the cars attempted to reverse back onto the Appel Quay, Princip whipped out his pistol and fired two shots at the archduke from point-blank range, piercing him in the neck and also striking Sophie’s abdomen. “Sophie, Sophie, don’t die-stay alive for our children,” Ferdinand murmured. Within minutes, though, both had passed away. Princip, a slender, 19-year-old Serbian army reject, later admitted to killing Ferdinand but said he had not meant to hit Sophie. Three weeks too young for the death penalty, Princip was given a 20-year sentence, but contracted tuberculosis and died in jail in April 1918, at the age of just 23.

They had no ties to Serbian army, concept of armies was different back then. Brittain is one of the rare countries that had professional army. It is much nore likely they were tied to Serbian government or influential politician/odd army officer, but surely these actions were not approved or encouraged by the king as Serbia had nothing to gain from this. While Austria wanted the war with Serbia Franz Ferdinand was the one influential person in Austria that did NOT want the war, killing him would be counter-productive. Serbia was not ready for this war, crippled from the Balkan wars and low on male population, however, experience from BAlkan war madr them way tougher and harder to defeat than Austria anticipated, especially sinxe war declaration was delayed for so long that they had time to prepare. Austria lost all the battles heavily and Serbia fell only after Bulgaria attacked from the east and Germans sent army to help Austrians. Anyways, Serbia had nothibg to gain from this confluct and lost 1 out of 3 citizen during the entire conflict.

Sarajevo gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, as a lyrical song it is pretty simple (being only the chorus is the part that is sung). But the instruments and the slow rising and falling of the drums (like they're the Drums of War) as the story is being told and knowing what would come after the assassination really helps set the tone of not just the track but the entire album as a whole. As a side note: the saddest thing, if you think about it, isn't just that Franz Ferdinand was the best hope for change for the Empire and was the one holding back the Empire from going to war. But also that after his death the Empire desperately wanted the war and in the end it ended up being what would lead to their eventual downfall, along with their allied empires of Germany and the Ottomans not to mention the Russian Empire. So when the lyrics: "From a shot that would change the world" is sung, it isn't hyperbole four empires collapsed or were on the verge of collapsing (in the case of the Astro-Hungarian Empire) by the end of the war. And I think (could be wrong) that the German Empire was THE superpower of the world at the time, definitely in Europe having just defeated the French. Monarchs, nobles, and upper-classmen sent their kids to and wanted to study in Berlin since it was the technological and scientific hub of Europe. No one thought it would die as quickly as it did, having lasted less then 50 years. Edit: Grammar

I was partially raised by my great uncle in the early to late 90s as a young boy . He was a veteran of the European theatre of WWII; and unlike most of his generation that weren't in a documentary, he shared tales of the hell that was war, the carnage he witnessed and dealt as a 20 yr old SC farmer turned infantryman. I was in a unique position, as he had no blood grandchildren, and I was the youngest of his his lone three great nephews and his favorite, and the summers I spent with him were filled with learning to plant watermelon, cantaloupe, corn, drive a tractor, and the fact that the only thing that healed the wounds to his heart and mind were good Christian woman waiting for him at home, and his faith in God. This combination of an early understanding of extreme poverty, human nature, war, led him to become the first man not a lawyer to become a judge in SC after a career as a police officer. He was the lone purely honest and moral man I have ever known. He died when I was 18, hehas been gone for 22 years now, and I still miss him, I lost my way after he died for.a very long time, but have been have been on the straight and narrow for three years at 38, just in time for what seems the great trial of our time as the world churns towards a new hell at war. Sabaton reminds me of him regardless of the war they sing so eloquently about. You hear the saying their was no glory in it to he poor farm boys turned soldiers that fought this war, they fought bc it's what they were told to do and what was right in their eyes at the time, it was not cliche, it's what they believed.

It was like the fall of dominos: Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia, Serbia's allied Russia declared war to Austria. Germany, allied to Austria, declared war to Russia. France and Great Britain, allied to Russia, declared war to Germany. Although Belgium was neutral, Germany invaded it in order to trap the French and British armies. Germany asked their ally Turkey to declare war to Russia and their allies. On demand of Great Britain, Japan invaded the German possessions in the Pacific (Marianas, Carolines, Marshall, Bismarck) and in continental China. Italy proposed to remain neutral against the retrocession of South Tyrol and Trieste. After Austria refused, Italy entered the war in 1915. USA, at first neutral, declared war to Germany in 1917 after the sinking of the Lusitania by a U-boot. The butterfly effect: one assassination in Serbia caused a war that spread to the whole world. There were fightings in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.

So we're just gonna gloss over the fact we didn't get that deep "SABATON" in this vid? This is what it must feel like to be cheated on.

The name of Assassin is Gavrilo Prinzip..a Serbian nationalist..

Gavrilo principes was the assassin who shot and killed franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, Gavrilo was a Hungarian nationalist much like the Irish Republican Army or IRA, who sought independence, however due to austohunggry being Allied to Germany whilst hungry was was protected by Russia all the while Russia was also allied with France mean while Germany was allied with Austria and Italy, as for England we were allied with France and Russia but due to our hatred of Europeans we decided to stay out of the whole mess, until the Germans decided to go through Belgium as it was the closest and fasted route to Paris in which case England being a protectorate of Belgium ended up joining the war, as for america it was in part due to unrestricted German attacks on ships including American supply ships to England as well as a letter to Mexico promising them to give them back South America,
