This sketch is too close to being a documentary into the Finnish man's mental state when drunk
@Beorninki8 ай бұрын
Exactly!
@perkele28028 ай бұрын
Been there done that but I think times are different nowadays. At least for me but in 80s and even 90s it still was hard core drinking among even so called "civilized" folks. My family was upper middle class and my parents had their master degrees in economy but oh boy when my father got drunk with his friends from same background. It didn't happen very often but I still remember those days in 70s and 80s. There were no violence but just like that like in this video. And it was more like a norm not exception. Now when my own children are adults they still sometimes have celebrations here in our house because of better conditions. I must say that they use alcohol in whole different way than it was used to be in my youth. And as I said also I have developed. I am 52 years old and since I was something about 40 I haven't been shitfaced except one time about six years ago. And propably that will be the last time for me.

Summanen was really struggling in the icy water and Korpela wanted to seize the opportunity and started improvising new lines just to make him suffer in the water a bit longer. All these random bits about blue cheese and not figuring out which number is written on the paper etc. are a part of that. That also explains the non-sensical bit about Pasi's hand-writing being so bad, when it was obviously Korpela's character that had written the note; Summanen had to come up with a response quick, while hardly being able to think in the cold water.

One of my favorite comedy genres is self-deprecation. And this sketch not only pokes fun at how (some) Finnish men behave while drunk, and acts as a parody of a typical 70s/80s/90s movie about rural Finland.

The rural Finland is still the same. The guy Korpela is playing is very recognizable.

It's from a classic Finnish sketch show about a fictional TV channel, Studio Julmahuvi (Studio Cruel Entertainment). What you saw was supposed to be a scene from a Finnish movie 'Roudasta rospuuttoon'. After that followed a studio discussion about the subject "Does Finnish movies portray a stereotypical picture of a Finnish man, and especially of a traditional Finnish farmer?" That sketch doesn't have English subtitles, but in it there's three upset farmers (all alike) criticizing the movie for just that. "is Finnish farmer violent?", the studio host asks from the third farmer. Then they call the leading actor in that movie to hear what he has to say to the matter. The studio host asks the actor, if he thinks that Finnish farmers are always drunk,. As it turns out, the actor himself is drunk out of his mind. In the end the host asks the actor about the criticized narrow portrayal of women in the movie, to which the farmers start shouting "Women, quiet!": "Studio Julmahuvi - Studiokeskustelu Isännät". The song, which starts to play in the end, is one from a band called Eppu Normaali, which is the all-time most popular band by album sales in Finland: "Eppu Normaali - Murheellisten laulujen maa | Finnish & English Lyrics". The song is also a tune on this fan video: "The Shining BUT Jack Nicholson Has a Finnish Accent". Studio Julmahuvi won the Bronze Rose in The Montreux Golden Rose Festival in 1997 with this mockumentary about a Finnish boyband: "Studio Julmahuvi - The Joyboys Story [1997] w/ English subtitles". The same actors made a crueler and absurd sketch show called 'Ihmebantu': "Ihmebantu - Don't worry!", "Ihmebantu - Samaan tahtiin kävelijät", "Ihmebantu - Mummo", "IHMEBANTU - GIRL AND A HOBO (ENG SUBS)" and "Ihmebantu - Ääni puhelimessa || Finnish with English subtitles".

Absolute legends all these guys, already, for Studio Julmahuvi. Had they wanted and had the insipiration, Studio Julmahuvi could have become Finland's very own Monty Python. Kummeli never came close, although it has to be argued that Kummeli did become a legit franchise. But there's like a light year between Studio Julmahuvi and anything else. Hands down.

This is probably the single most funny sketch in the history of Finnish TV. All Finns know (or have themselves been) someone like in this situation. Julmahuvi was a group, and Studio Julmahuvi was a show where all the sketches were in form of a night of television programming (like news, documentaries, talk shows, children's shows and movies). This is supposed to be a drama movie about a finnish countryside farmer. An absolutely hilarious depiction of a Finnish drunkard mentality.

Studio Julmahuvi was a sketch show where they were supposedly making/showing multiple programs, I guess like a night's programming for a TV channel. This sketch purported to be a trailer or selected scenes from a Finnish movie. Yes, they used to make movies and TV (mini)series that were somewhat like this, often based on books.

Studio Julmahuvi (Studio Cruel fun) made very stereotypical skits. 😅 One of the favorites was the German crime series skit Die Kühe (The Cows), translated into Finnish Ratkaisijat (Solvers). 😂

The skit is from the late 1990s and the production quality is excellent because they had a pretty beefy budget. And our hero really was in the icy water... I recommend other skits from the same show as well. Although probably not all of them are available with English subtitles.

I guess this show was more about making fun of the kind of tv we had back in the day. It's more evident in some other sketches though. There's stuff about the news, language programs, detective series and the like. It was always produced to match the production of what was made fun of.

It is a parody of Finnish movies of the time. Still have to say the movies are pretty serious and depressing, but at least the movie scene in Finland has diversified a lot now. You should watch the new (2017) version of Tuntematon Sotilas. Based on a novel of the same name there have been three film adaptations: 1955, 1985 and 2017. The latest one is probably the most realistic and complete because of being the most expensive traditional film ever made in Finland. Many people even without the Finnish bias consider it the best war movie ever made. The trailer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIW8lqaEn8SmeMksi=jO30b68v99SadYG5

This show here was quite inspired by Chris Morris' UK shows like 'The Day Today'. This is still one of the best sketch comedy shows produced in Finland, and it totally reformed the sketch comedy field here, which by the time this show was released has gotten very stale and devolved into just weird clothing, strange behaviour and of course catchphrases. Studio Julmahuvi presented, kinda simulated one evening's worth of TV-shows by a TV-channel, and those shows were of course the sketches. So it was also about a broadcasting channel and what goes on there. Rather than catchphrases and silly attires, the show relied on satire and absurdism, and for the time it had quite high production values, at least for a sketch comedy show.

I've actually seen this sort of behaviour, basically when you are drunk and feel like a failure and then the drunken SISU kicks in, but lots of different emotions... Basically a finnish man facing his inner demons while drunk... some parts of it I've seen live and in few different people, so very very familiar, just beautifully maxed out on every aspect... Sort of sad to see, but yet it makes one smile 😀

I think the ice bath is sort of just the extremety of the idea of how a finnish man is a stubborn sonova*. But yeah it's mostly just making fun of how drunk people get so intense about something popping in their head and finns being so stubborn. And like how the man's idea was that well, since he's out here, he might just as well take care of the house tasks like chopping wood and fixing things. Sort of atonement too. I think the brilliance is how well it depicts some features of the spirit of the people while being completely ridiculous. Like the man still was paying attention to everything like the pizza orders and the sort of endearing tone he had about the sons. And just the idea that finnish man didn't talk about feelings, he knew he had screwed up and wanted to make it good, felt like self-punishment was the way as well. But definitely not having an open discussion.
