The thing is with Alf Garnet and Eddie Booth (Love thy Neighbour), it was always give and take. The wives were always the anti racists while the men took the gloves off. They called each other names all the time. that’s British because we do call our friends a family names in banter. It shows we care. Eddie and Bill were always at the pub having a drink together in every episode. Bill and his black friends were dressed in loin cloths in one show where they had Eddie Booth in a cooking pot with onions. Eddie always came off worse. 😂 it took the piss out of racism. However, there’s only so much anyone can take and it hasn’t imo stood the test of time.

The human species evolved to a point where we are at today, because of our sophisticated method of communication. It allows us to gather in cooperative groups. We observe, copy, teach, learn, invent innovations and so much more. Humour is an effective means to point out the absurdity of bigotry. It’s not when we stop talking to each other that the fighting begins, it’s when we stop listening to each other. Sadly the self righteous are usually the first to stop listening because they believe wholeheartedly that they are right and thus no other viewpoint has any validity.

The thing is, this was not racist because everyone then took the mickey out of each other and IT WAS FUNNY, it only becomes racist when it is said with malice and intent to do harm. For example, Gunga Din, was a movie about a very loyal and brave Indian who supported the Raj, so the term was a backhanded compliment in fact. I worked with a lovely Jamaican bloke, he called me Honky Boy all the time, no malice meant, none taken,. Now even Maths is racist if you listen to those who make money out of pushing that agenda. What a lot of people missed was that Warren Mitchell was Jewish so he knew what racist was. Also all the actors in it have gone on to have fruitful careers as a result of the show. So in short what I am saying is, if it is funny and both parties laugh, it is just funny.

I would just like to point out that Till Death Do Us Part (1965) was NOT racist in any way shape or form. It was actually the complete opposite. The period was the post war 1950s. The lead character, wonderfully portrayed by Warren Mitchell, was your stereotypical, elderly male London bigot. If you watch the series you will find that there is a single theme throughout the series. That's taking the piss out of Alf for his outmoded views. That was the point of the ethnically diverse cast. The comedy was in the way Alf is constantly being wound up by the diversity he found himself among and constantly being mocked for his tantrums. Some might say it was before its time.

In NZ I as a kid and my white family used to get all the BBC sitcoms and most were funny but this character and guests playing to him is irritating. Love thy Neighbour better although became boring after awhile and On the Buses (woke would say sexist) etc. My first taste of TV was visiting grandmas who had one and peeking through my fingers from around from the back of the sofa when Callan came on (the swinging lightbulb) For some reason I thought it scary (i must have been 6). American sitcom and police and western drama increased in the 70s. I was allowed to stay up when High Chaparral came on, at the time we believed this stuff was great and got cowboy and Indian costumes ( I remember my mum embroidering a light weight sack cloth for my sisters Indian costume and my best every present what I thought to be a realistic size silver and pearl shell colt cap gun (apparently now all racist because unrealistic.) We loved watching "Good Times" when it came on. Same thing just the other way around and J.J. was awesome. We weren't entitled lived in multicultural society but both my parents worked for what they gave us and my alcoholic father quit drinking many years earlier and struggled with it not just because of temptation but the social pressure at work etc. And yes there is the other side and regardless whether Maori or not alcohol in the culture destroys families. It is a big problem in NZ and Australia, also Ireland as well our ancestors. and many years later we get all the dirt what went on in these American programs behind the scenes. Everything in the US is a lie. This lie we are living right now. Halloween is now being practiced and promoted in Thailand not brought here by Britain but by the US. Christmas trees introduced a few years back. it is a cancer. Thailand traditionally Buddhist and Muslim buying into the western mainstream lie. Americans have been using TV as a weapon. Straight after illegally destroying Iraq they place TVs in every ones houses for free. To change the Iraqi with lies. The whole medium and how the programs are made uses lies to deceive the eye, to make something look credible then there are the verbal lies and the forced content. Sounds devilish to me.
