What a fantastic uplifting band Supertramp were.👍👍
@Chordonblue
@Chordonblue 2 жыл бұрын
They certainly weren't ALWAYS uplifting. But Roger's songs were clearly the most upbeat, where Rick's were generally the most broody. The combination of which made 'Crime of the Century' such a wonderful album. When I hear this song, I'm reminded that Rick and Roger had stopped writing together at this point (Famous Last Words). This was a Roger song, almost what you'd hear on his solo projects after this.

The instrument you're referring to is an Italian instrument called a melodica. It's sort of a hand held keyboard that you blow into.

Happy song that seems simple but is full of small details typical of Supertramp, I see myself listening to this song driving my car with the sunroof open enjoying the fresh air of Patagonia on my next summer vacation 🚙. Probably, in addition to the music, Verdy's smile will come to mind. Thanks for the sweet reaction.🤞

One of my favourites, maybe not the best but so much memories. Remember sitting in my favourite Cafe back in the 80s on a friday afternoon when suddenly a heavy rainshower came down. One of the guys was putting a coin into the Jukebox and ... This moment I will never forget my whole life !!

Would love to see Roger in action again. Saw him 10 years ago on solo tour. A Supertramp reunion is extremely unlikely as Rick is apparently very ill and Roger never bit at the idea, but Roger's band was top-notch - all great performers, and the songs were DEAD on. They even did 'Fool's Overture', which modern tech makes what was formerly impossible, possible.

When I saw Roger Hodgson (the writer of this song) live, the instrument you're referring to was a melodica. Look it up. It's a small handheld single octave wind instrument. It was originally played by Rick Davies - the co-founder of the band and overall keyboard guy. This was what was used in the original recording, and yes, it worked wonderfully!

Hi, I just discovered your channel by accident - I put a comment on the top songs of the 80s video. Then I had a look at what else you had and there was this utter gem. Many reactors do Supertramp but they always seem to miss out what is to me at least their very best song! A couple of years ago I went to see Roger Hodgson in concert - he's the singer on this one, and he does one-man-and-a-band shows, covering all the Supertramp hits. It really was one of the best concerts I've ever been to - his voice hasn't changed over the years, his piano playing is great, the band was rocking, the audience was really enjoying it. But when he played this one, the entire Royal Albert Hall was up on its feet singing along, even me, who couldn't sing a note if my life depended on it. What a great song, and it was nice to see someone appreciating it so much.

Hey Verdy, great reaction again. It’s so easy to be joyful with a band like Supertramp. I believe the sound at the end is a Melodica . It’s a small hand held keyboard with a tube that lets the vocalist plow into the keyboard creating that unique sound. Another interesting fact……the tune at the end being sung by children is an old English nursery rime. Thanks for this.😍

Hi Verdy. Good to see you continuing your exploration of some of my favourite prog/rock bands. I don't think I've seen you do any reactions to Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson (apologies if I'm wrong). Might be worth giving them/him a try? As you seem to like keyboard and guitar solos, I'd recommend Home Invasion/Regret #9 from Wilson's album Hand Cannot Erase. In fact just about everything on that album is terrific!

Admittedly I disliked this track when it hit the radio in the early 80s. Thought it was too bubblegum pop and grating. But today it's a different story. I rather enjoy it. In fact, the entire album 'Famous Last Words' is an underrated and entertaining listen, despite its mediocre critical reputation. It was the last record with Hodgson also and many fans wanted a huge "follow-up farewell" with the same punchy quality of 'Breakfast In America.'
