This is my reaction to Taistelukenttä 2020 | Slagfält 2020 | Battlefield 2020
In this video I react to the Finnish military by reacting to a video shown to Finnish conscription members that shows the Finnish Army, Finnish Navy and Finnish Air Force in action.

This was made by Finnish Defence Forces and YLE, the national broadcasting company. It feels real indeed, because there are no actors. Everyone plays their own part as they would in reality. The news studios were real, the news anchors were real. We saw and heard them everyday (the layout and cast has changed since though). Also all the professional soldiers, conscripts, reservists and police were real. So, imagine the eerie feeling I had watching this the first time.. seeing the news anchor, who I was used to see every day updating me on world affairs, telling me that Finland is at war. I almost checked the time IRL because the president was to give a speech at 1600, lol..

Important to note that the news reader and news studio are real ones so for a Finnish viewer the moment the newsreader says "Finland is at war" is really eerie, if I am using that world correctly.

They ¨probably use the same material if the real situlation. It's claimed that every President has made a recorded video about speach how to inform residents about war. Probably recordings about.mobilization information too. So no need to think, just to play the recording.

That fact makes this whole thing bone chilling. Hearing the familiar voices who usually tell us our everyday news, telling about these attacks? Seeing them speaking about it in a studio we see every day? It makes it feel so real. Makes it possible to try to imagine how it would feel to watch these news in a real situation.

This video is shown to every recruit during their first weeks of training, it feels really intense watching it in an auditorium with 70 other conscripts. The reason why it feels so real, is because all of the people that you see on the video, are not actors, but real soldiers, news representers, border guards, police, etc. Everyone is doing their real job. Plus this is the official product of the Finnish Defence Forces, and all of the footage is actually real military training footage.

The soldiers, news anchors and all the other people are real. The level of a Finnish conscript corresponds to the level of a US Marine - at least and that is not just my opinion but the opinion of an American commander who reports to America on Finland's defense capabilities for his job. When talking about saunas and soldiers, it is worth considering that a Finnish sauna is very different from other saunas in the world (except Estonia). The same applies to the training of Finnish Defense Forces conscripts.

@mikorossi1959, the level of a Finnish conscript indeed corresponds to the level of a US Marine, if this all is happening on a Finnish terrain, where the Finns have a relatively big homeground advantage. They have trained during their whole military career in this kind of an environment, but the US Marines only for a short time. But if we put those two groups training in a desert or in a jungle, then the US Marines would certainly prevail.

They have been operating for over 50 years in different deserts, etc., so I don't think location matters as much as you think...? Military training (especially versatility), skills and character matter a lot. Except here in Finland, of course, we have a big advantage. Here's another statement I found: "American Lieutenant General Frederick "Ben" Hodges estimated that Finland would be able to crush Russian forces even alone. It's made by the Finnish Defense Forces. They started to use film as part of the training, documentation and communication in 1925. There's this 90th anniversary video about that from 2015. No subtitles, but interesting footage nevertheless: "Kuvaustoiminta Puolustusvoimissa 90 vuotta - Katsaus koulutuselokuvan vuosikymmeniin". They have been internationally awarded for some of their films, E.g. for 'Taistelukenttä 1998', which is also available for viewing. And as it happens, a similar series to that 'Battlefield 2020' is coming soon on the Finnish TV: "Konflikti X Varusteleka".

For us Finn's, this kind of situation would feel very personal. Because those soldiers who would go to defend this country would be our brothers, fathers, sons and friends. We are so small nation and we don't have a professional army. It's just us. So even watching an exercise like this, it feels pretty personal thing. And we are proud our systems and we trust our military, it's our family. And by the way, there is no actors in this video. Only reserve.

The video felt frighteningly realistic. I completed my own service time in the defense forces in the late 90s as a military police, and even then there was a lot of practice in managing the situations described in the video. War doesn't start these days (if it ever did) by issuing a declaration of war and then attacking. There is often a long gray zone before actual military operations. Maybe you should watch older video, Sotilaspoliisit, Military Police in Action - Guards Jaeger Regiment

I like how the events of the video escalate slowly and how they portray different aspects, like the way everything could be reported about in the media. And as many have said, the news cast is familiar faces, so that makes it feel real. Maybe the plot feels a bit optimistic and the acting is not perfect in all the places. So not a movie, but that is to be expected. Excellent idea and good execution.

Like mentioned many times in the comments already, this video was produced by the FDF itself, and it predates the Russian invasion of Ukraine by two whole years, and demonstrated how spot on the FDF was with its predictions and preparation methods before the war started. It is not only a great info package for the conscripts, but also a way to demonstrate the population how a truly modern conflict could play out, and how the various units and civilian services would co-operate. The military service is very much woven into the Finnish society and culture; we already see FDF working together with the civilian law enforces and rescue units. Plus, since every other dude on the street HAS served, and the "frontlines" usually are right at our front door, the local population takes this stuff seriously, and personally. It's not that Finns have a "great confidence in their military", the Finns themselves ARE their military. The polls do show that the Finnish population is highly motivated and ready to fight for their country if needed. The NATO membership is still a welcome bonus!

This is even more powerful when you know that all the journalists and military personnel are really who they say they are. This seems to be a film produced by the defense forces. When you add the dates, 2020 and a few thousand kilometers south, 2022, so it cannot be without thinking, that is this hybrid influencing in some direction? "We know what you're doing and don't try it here". This was the situation in 2020 when we weren't yet part of NATO. Now the situation is completely different, because there is more power in the background.

I think this is a prequel to taistelukenttä 1998 in a way. That older one shows what keeps happening after this one. Even though it is older, I think it still has some value, mostly because majority of reservists are not urban jaegers, but infantry. Ironically the gear in 1998 version would be more on point today, since we have mountains of old gear in stock reserved to arm a full army. There is much more of old pattern camos, old style rifles, even the old style harness systems than the modern ones. Please, react to that one too! It has some good acting! My favourite easter egg in that old taistelukenttä is when conscripts are loading ammo truck, shoveling dirt and complaining about the heavy boxes, the radio in the background plays a song by J. Karjalainen that translates: "I am a man, I am a man, to whom nothing ever happens" Things happen when least expected.

A little detail here, these days "jaeger", in the context of the Finnish military, mainly refers to "infantry", and not special (German trained) elite forces as it used to mean in the first half of the 1900's, because in Finnish "infantry" or foot soldiers translates to "jalkaväki", and the direct Finnish pronunciation of "jaeger" is "jääkäri", which is more convenient and faster to say than "jalkaväki".

As from someone living in Hanko this was very interesting to watch and felt like movie but same time giving chills for the seriousness was interesting. I think finnish army has this own combat cam or something like it. They usually are professional military because you cant let just any random crew to film and edit military stuff and the quality of the combatcam videos usually are sick af. Nothing would change. The threats, gear and tactics would be mostly the same, and Finns are first and foremost responsible for defending their own country. The biggest benefit of the NATO membership is the exponentially improved logistics and information flow, together with the more open-borders approach of defending the entire Baltic Sea region at this point. The protection gained from the famous Article 5 is obviously the biggest bonus, if Vlad goes batshit insane.

This is the old video which I saw when I was in army in 2008. It was probably the first day when we watched this as a motivational video. To understand what we are doing for the next 365 days. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHvZo4xmaddrn9Esi=rSKdj1fQMlULMJMe

Swedish snipers.... wtf dude... uk active military is like 40k... finland has more ex. trainer army than real uk armed forces ..6 months in conflict... COLONIZATION is over. UK is small player.Im sorry but its just FACTS. this video was for Finnish people, cause their duty, is to protect homeland. And all men from 18-28 need basic military training. its hard to explain ex colonist empire citizen, how really shit works. for uk there is only neptune nuc. torpedo and thats it.. ships you conquered the world and by torpedo´s nukes you lose. 😂

Why are you so aggressive? And, please, educate yourself before making comments on other countries militaries!

Kukaan ei toivo. Se on aina tullut meidän maille kutsumatta. Yleensä Itärajan takaa, kumma juttu! Valmistautuminen pahan päivän varalle = puhdasta maalaisjärkeä. tl;dr: No, Finns never have asked for wars. But the great Ivan sure loves to bring it to our lands at least once in a century. No joke.

Hits my eye that they use translation for " puolustusvoimat " ( Defence forces ) or " maajoukot " ( ground forces ) as "Army". We have defence forces yes. But it is informal to say Army.

Bunch of drama for nothing. At the rate Mordor is losing tanks, heavy artillery, armored vehicles, support vehicles, weapons, munitions, warplanes choppers, supply depots, troops, and the inability to replace them, what's the orc army going to do,,,. WALK to the Finnish border? 😅😅😅

As a Finn what I can say is that I acknowledge this to be military propaganda, and thus it is always a poor representation of the actual effectiveness and tactics used by said military. I do however acknowledge the Defence Forces are adequate and even competent in many areas.
