This video is hilarious 😂 There are definite cultural differences between Anglo Aussies and 'wogs' (Greek/Italian/Lebanese-born immigrants and their Aussie-born descendants). Mostly these days we all just accept each other and get along fine 😊

As a person that went to high school with wogs and spent the Christmas period with them, this is 100% true! Worse…. When you visit and you’re pregnant. You’ve never been fed so much food in your life, and on top of that sent home with a doggy bag. A doggy bag is the leftovers of your food for you to finish at home .

Aussie here 🇦🇺 …. So a “wog” is an Italian, Greek or Lebanese immigrant to Australia and used to be a derogatory term in the 1950s to 70s. But we have since embraced them as our own, especially their food with COFFEE, pasta, all things lamb, baklava, kebabs and gourmet ice cream/gelato having conquered our nation by stealth (just for starters). Wog is now a term of endearment if used at all. They are just Aussies now. This shift perhaps began with the comedy series - around the 70s and 80s - “Wogs out of Work” where they reclaimed the term, sent themselves up, and made us all “piss ourselves laughing”.

Broadly-speaking, in Australia the term Wog refers to someone of southern European origin. The most common application could be to people of Greek or Macedonian heritage but it can also apply to people of south Italian origin or people with origins in the western Mediterranean (Lebanon for example). Originally a derogatory term, it has been embraced by some people, particularly people of Greek origin.

Mate, "wogs" used to be Greek, Italian and Yugoslav. Now its a broader term encompassing more people. The breakup of Yugoslavia into smaller countries doesn't change their fate. But now Lebanese and Assyrians have been added to the list. I think its basically anyone who speaks like these blokes. The term "wog" does not include any type of Asians. Not subcontinentals, Philos, Chinese or Vietnamese.

Wogs generally refer to people from Southern Europe and the Middle East. Their descendants have appropriated what used to be a derogatory term and have claimed it as their own and it is now a term of pride for them. There have been several famous tv comedy shows based on Wog identity. I have Wog relatives and friends and love them, like most Australians.

Coming from a lower socio-economic Slavic-Australian background I definitely remember seeing Anglo-Aussie families and recognising the cultural differences. The emphasis on hard work in immigrant families is something I definitely identify with also.

Originally , the term "wog", had nothing to do with Greek or Italian immigrants but was applied to Chinese immigrants during the gold rush era in Australia .Wog was a term for Chinese immigrants who dressed like Westerners, Western Oriental Gentlemen . It came from a period of Australian history dominated by The White Australia policy so the term wog originally had racist connotations .The meaning of the term wog has a very different meaning in modern Australia .

Just to add on to your comment. In the 1950's & 1960's there was an influx of immigrants from South Eastern Europe, Western Middle East & Mediterranean North Africa. These immigrants started to be called 'Wogs' as a racial slur. The immigrants actually picked up the term & used it for themselves. This was mainly in the Lygon Street, Carlton area. Now the term is not really used by the majority of Aussies, except for the so called 'Wogs'.

@@optimusvalerius8824 The facts indicate that the term was probably not even of Australian but rather British origin and if you knew anything about Australian history you'd know that there's no evidence whatsoever to indicate the term was even in use during the Gold Rush at all. The theory you're trying to push literally doesn't even align chronologically as the Chinese migration during the Gold Rush occurred principally from 1848-1861 and there is no record of the term "wog" in the modern lexicon until the 1920's which comes from a British source, not even an Australian one. I don't need the opinion of an Australian historian to know that those dates don't match up, especially considering the fact that I have a degree in history, myself, from one of the best tertiary institutions (arguably the best, according to most international ranking systems) in Australia. Whilst the theory you're positing is certainly possible it isn't chronologically supported.

It always annoys me when people assume Anglo Aussie families are all like The Brady Bunch or something. Like some Aussie kids weren't also brought up with tough love. Like some Aussie parents weren't very strict and old school, either. It's all just stereotyping. Which ironically seems to be fine and acceptable when it's making fun of Aussies. But heaven forbid it goes the other way. There are plenty of "wog" families nowadays who don't behave this way. Just as there are plenty of Aussie families (once colloquially referred to as "skips" by "wogs"), that are far from showing the sweetness and light. Anyways, that's my 2 cents worth on the topic.

WOG generally refers to Greeks and Italians who came in waves to Australia at the conclusion of WWII. The acronym expanded actually means 'Western Oriental Gentleman' but was unfortunately coopeted by the far more bigoted nation we ONCE were and used as a term of slander. The funny thing is that the Greeks and Italians adopted the term and became every bit what Australia was taking the piss out of them for (hence what you see in these vids). Over time it has become a word that you would never use to refer to the Greeks and Italians, to a term adopted by the Greeks and Italians to refer to the worst of their people in Australia. The ones who refuse to adopt anything Australian, who insist on living an overblown form of what they perceive their homeland to be (even though their respective home lands have changed dramatically since WWII and they are at least four generations in). These guys are essentially taking the piss out of...well... the super WOG and equally the full bogan Aussies (which is also a piss take). FYI, the integration of Greeks and Italians into Australian society was a huge success and now they are seen as an essential part of Australian culture in every way, hence being able to make vids like this and have us all laughing at each other together.

Hate the 'wog' term. Its bad enough when greeks and Italians say "we embrace it". Not all of us do... ...but it's even worse when anglo saxons say, its a "term of endearment"... Sorry, its actually not. In today's society, most ethnic groups do not accept name calling, so why do some still think its ok to refer to Mediterranean migrants as wogs? Its condescending Those that lived it, before comedians made it funny, were embarrassed and hurt by it... and for fear of losing their jobs or being ostracized, put up with it and remember this time of their lives unhappily. This is my opinion.. At the end of the day, its still putting a tag on someone because of their ethnicity.... Last time i checked this was innapropriate. So im not sure why so many still glamourise this term.
